U.S. Politics

it's never America First, it's Me First
This is literally the bottom line of all this.

Legitimized selfishness.

And it’s easily hidden and justified behind “my country”, “my family”, “my religion”, “my people”, but that’s just bullshit posturing and self-delusion. It’s “Me First, and Me Only” parsed through a lens of fake tribalism and phony “allegiance”.

Anyone who says differently is lying: to themselves, to others, or both.

And that is what truly disgusts me. Perhaps it’s how my wacky neurospicy brain works, but I cannot respect anyone, regardless of political “side”, who puts their own specific interests above the good of the many. And it doesn’t matter how they dress it up. Like perhaps a hot take, but if the only way to make good for yourself/your family/your business/whatever is to “win” over others, then you absolute do not deserve to “win” or make good. If you have to have less or even die so that many others can have *something*, then so fucking be it.

It's the 1984 approach.

We are at war with Euarasia. We are at war with Eastasia, actually. Anyway, two minutes's hate, but it's not Goldstein, it's a moving target du jour.

They're doing it. It works. Many people don't leave their home state, let alone country. They are content to hear phantom problems, attribute it to a local hardship, and go with it. Look at a Portland and Chicago. It's your own country, and they don't give a damn. It's their own state, and its urban vs rural values, they don't give a damn.

All you need is to distract them and validate that their hardships are not their fault or their solution. Look at that fuckass who killed the two classmates. It's not new, the right wing just commodified and up sold it with a veneer of Its Just Memes Bro, It's Not That Serious, which are today's War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength

It went from Wojak to Pepe to AI.

It's the Fahrenheit 451 approach

Censorship and alternative facts.

Anti-intellectualism and distrust of experts.

Entertainment and distraction .

Weaponized nostalgia / emotions.

Fear of the Other.

"You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them."

"The televisor is ‘real.’ It is immediate, it has dimension. It tells you what to think and blasts it in. It must be right. It seems so right."

People can be stupid. I mean that as definitive as possible - lack of intelligence. It's a willing ignorance. And then you realize there is no common sense as you believe it. As a kid I thought some adults were, but it's much worse than I thought and every day we see randos online or people in authority and we're like, "How do you even function?"

They function because at the core all you need to do is the above, and stupid self centered people with no emotional capacity for growth or empathy will obey it as long as you don't change their beer label graphic design, because that's their personality.

I can be optimistic and hold light for the future. But to question how they can get away with it or how much will people take. We've got books on that, too. Even in World War 2 it took immediate self interest to be proactive. We like to revise it as how heroic and Team America World Police we are, God's gift to Liberty. Nah. Sitting by that idly until then is the same as everything now. I'm not judging them. It's just how it works.
I think you're right for 30–45% of the country. For the rest of us, that shit isn't going to work. At least, not for long. You have to keep the people down until the memories of the good times are gone (Russia). That's why I'm skeptical about the regime's durability. You're going to delete science, do Secret Police and military occupation shit, and cancel Christmas? We were raised on American Revolution rhetoric. Godspeed.
Two of my greatest celebrity disappointments are Bill Maher and Dennis Miller. It's absolutely insane to me that these guys, for a long time, were getting so much right, and then suddenly just fell down the same rabbit holes they warned everyone else about for decades.
It's Rich Guy Brain. You get rich and famous enough, and suddenly the only people you hang out with are rich guys. It's the same pattern that we're seeing with Twitter users now. Cook your brain long enough and it becomes soup. I'm a long-time Bill Simmons fan, but I think he gets worse every year. Whenever he touches on Trump, which is rare, he plays it down.

People really think this is a fever we'll get over the second the next president comes into office. If we get them out of office, January 6 is going to look like a kid's birthday party. Trump isn't willingly leaving. Either his supporters or his loyalists in the military aren't going down without a fight.

That was quite a digression from Bill Maher being nuts.

This is the kind of talk that gets weak-willed performative anti-Trumpers to say they are “worried” about me, when what they really mean is “this line of thinking makes me uncomfortable so I have to push it away even though it is obviously the truth”.

oooo they hate being filmed they will make up anything to arrest you for it

it's nice to believe that the guy was a criminal from Venezuela until they can't really back it up

won't even let our Senators in to check things out

9/11 broke Miller, he's never been the same since.
