Honestly I wish I could be more optimistic about this but it doesn't change anything really. It was already a Dem seat and while it is good to have a member in their to vote the republicans still have enough of a majority to avoid doing anything (yet). Combined with the utter uselessness of Dem leadership and I won't hold my breath for now.![]()
Arizona Democrat wins special congressional election — putting Republicans in the hot seat
The victory of Adelita Grijalva to replace her late father will bring the House makeup to 219-214, and will likely secure the signatures required to vote on releasing the Epstein files.www.yahoo.com
It begins.
Let's fuckin' go.
Exactly. It's also ALL performative. If Dems gained a new seat, one extra Republican that had previously voted for releasing the files would now vote against it. We've seen this game before.Honestly I wish I could be more optimistic about this but it doesn't change anything really. Hopeful, but not expecting much. Especially with the looming shutdown probably being the thing everyone focuses on for the next couple weeks.

I feel like I've seen enough autism content by autistic people to understand that while navigating an allistic world can be difficult and stressful for them, they're perfectly fine with who they are. The assumptions made about autism from all these concerned moms and politicians, representing beliefs that I think it's fair to call ableist, hateful, and often outright eugenicist, are frankly horrifying.I know we've mostly moved on from the Tylenol bit (as we should), but a friend of mine shared a meme that said "If you only take Tylenol PM, your kids will only be autistic at night", and I thought it was hilarious.I also encountered a nutjob because of it, who tagged everyone who reacted to it in a comment saying "There's nothing funny about this. Autistic kids wish they could turn their autism on and off at will. I wouldn't wish autism on my worst enemies. You all should be ashamed of yourselves."
Aside from totally missing the point of the absurdity of it, it's like....sure. Maybe some autistic folks wish they could turn it off. As with everything, there's different levels, and some are quite severe. Others are perfectly high-functioning and quite content with it. This person is a friend of a friend, quite religious and very "alternative medicine" (their latest post they shared was a picture of some guy we have here in Times Square that has a big sign saying something like "sin is caused by a buildup of proteins in the eye" or something like that, and has a big science fair-esque board with all his "evidence"- really bonkers stuff; I'll have to see if I can find it).
Not that I expect anything sane or logical from certain folks, but it just highlights again the mindset that some folks would rather have a dead kid (or no kid at all) than an autistic kid, or a gay kid, or what have you. They lump everyone with the most serious examples of something and assume everyone acts or feels the same way, and like they're doing some righteous thing by fighting for a community that doesn't really want to be fought for (at least by others). Always pisses me off.
Anywho. I think we should just forego the teleprompter or written speeches for Trump from here on out. Let him speak for himself and dig himself an even deeper grave. Some folks will never be swayed by what we says, no matter how egregious, but I saw a surprising amount (to me) of supporters with a real bad taste in their mouth after the UN shenanigans, so let him chip away at his base little by little, says I.
I have an autistic brother, who is very high functioning. He is in his thirties, but emotionally is more like a teen. I really hate that these folks are acting like he has some terrible disease that is destroying his life...he sees things and has perspectives that other people don't, and I wouldn't want that to be taken from him! Sure, I'd like for there to be some therapies that could improve his life, but if he were to lose many things that are attributed to his autism, he'd be losing an essential part of himself. What scares me is that my parents, being Trump worshipping nuts, will likely believe that the Mango Messiah is delivering a cure sent from God on high. They'd likely give him whatever snake oil their dear leader deems appropriate, regardless of what the medical professionals they usually work with tell them. I really hate this Hell Dimension we have descended into....where is Buffy when we need her?I know we've mostly moved on from the Tylenol bit (as we should), but a friend of mine shared a meme that said "If you only take Tylenol PM, your kids will only be autistic at night", and I thought it was hilarious.I also encountered a nutjob because of it, who tagged everyone who reacted to it in a comment saying "There's nothing funny about this. Truth. The spot where MAGA/Q nuts and ultra-granola hippie moms intersect. In the interest of being both fair and also SO balanced; Liberals have almost just as bad of a track record with issues like autism. As a lefty, I used to get into outright verbal brawls with people that were full out spouting eugenics and either didn't realize it, or didn't think it was technically problematic in this specific case. The whole 'I don't vaccinate my kids against deadly illnesses because it can cause autism crowd,' who are outright saying the child is better off dead than autistic.
MOST of that attitude seems to have come out of the liberal new age Whole Foods soccer mom crowd. Liberals were absolutely fucking terrible for spreading around bad science and eugenics as a fun hobby for many years. And it's still one of the most effective liberal-to-conservative pipelines, particularly for women, in my view.
