U.S. Politics

The eastern world, it is explodin'.
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'.
You're old enough to kill, but not for votin'.
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun your totin'?
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'.

But ya tell me over and over and over again, my friend.
How you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say?
And can't you feel the fears that I'm feelin' today?
If the button is pushed there's no runnin' away.
There'll be no-one to save with the world in a grave.
Take a look around ya boy, it's bound to scare ya boy.

And ya tell me over and over and over again, my friend.
How you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation
Handful of Senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'

And you tell me over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

But think of all the hate there is in Red China.
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama.
You may leave here for four days in space.
But when you return it's the same old place.
The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace.
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace.
Hate your next door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace.

And tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend.
You don't believe, we're on the eve of destruction.
Ah, no no, you don't believe, we're on the eve of destruction.

Those are the lyrics of a song called "Eve of Destruction". It was written by a songwriter named P.F. Sloan in 1965.

This was a powerful song that was very much a product of it's time. Social injustice, civil rights marches, the Kennedy and King assassinations, political instability and the existential fear of mutually assured nuclear annihilation.

Man, good thing we've moved past all that.

Oh ... wait ...

Absolutely perfect disguise, it's practically the profile pic of 80% of gormless, frothing right-wing muppets on every social site you care to mention.

Definitely looks like a stroke.

Cognitive decline has obviously accelerated in the last few months.

He’s not going to be able to be propped up for long, I think.

Again, not condoning violence, but hoo boy the more the head of the MAGA snake can be cut off, the better off we will all be. If Trump AND Kirk could be off the board, that would be a very hopeful scenario.

I don't think Kirk should've been killed for his views
I do. And I'm tired of pretending we -shouldn't- think that. Remember when killing Nazis was literally the most American thing you could do, and generally accepted as a GOOD thing to want to do? Why do I feel like I'm the only one that remembers that.

There's a bizarre shift in the air of social media of 20-somethings following Kirk's death. Immediately prior, everyone was sitting on their thumbs praying for Trump's death, celebrating Hulk Hogan's death... while now? Around half are talking about how sick and cruel it can be to wish for and celebrate the death of another human being, how every person needs to be tried in a lawful manner, how we all need to hold hands and pray.

The last time I've seen so many Americans my age this vocal about someone's death, it was George Floyd. We've gone from mourning and protesting the senseless deaths of people barely different from all of us in a crime that happens every day... to us swearing off all forms of immediate action, all forms of protest, and instead mourning the death of someone who sees nothing in other human beings except statistics and money. What changed?

It's always a good thing when a Nazi gets hurt or killed. They happily painted the targets on their own heads, after all. Though, on its own, Kirk's assassination will be very little but a talking point in political debates. It takes a lot more violence to stamp out fascism than that.

Regardless, [insert a certain Suite Life on Deck quote here].

Another day, another amendment into the woodchipper:

Looks like the honored Charlie Kirk will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. 🤡

that is something I think about, how it's pretty much accepted in popular culture that one shouldn't feel sorrow when Nazis and open white supremacists are killed.

although usually when that is brought up it's about groups from the past and not the groups operating today. like, "Yeah if I had been around in the 1940's I definitely would have been killin' them Nazis. Fuck Nazis, I hate 'em! USA! USA! But the people expressing blood and soil nationalism deserve their right to free speech, etc." that sort of thing.

I know if tomorrow I killed a guy in cold blood simply for having a Black Sun or Totenkopf tattoo I would absolutely be going to jail for first degree murder.
