Tracking toy tariffs

Does anyone know what type of Trump tariff tax fee we should expect from Mondo? Is it literally go to be 145% of the retail price of a figure? Or some other cost, like what it actually cost to manufacture the figure (which I assume is way less than the $200 or so they charge).
No way to know. But what's actually interesting here is now companies have to worry about people reverse-engineering their costs. The amount everything goes up, in theory, could tell us exactly what they value their products at. But I don't think anyone has yet come out with what the actual new prices would be for anything in the toy world.

No one knows exactly yet. It was supposed to have taken effect today, but none of their preorder items have applied it that I can see.

I did see on Gundamit (and show.z) that they had added shipping charges to things, where shipping was once free. I don't know if individual prices have been bumped, but I didn't notice any on the things I was looking at compared to a few weeks ago. Knowing my preorders won't be affected is pretty incredible, I don't have a ton but I do have enough that it would be very expensive if all of the costs were sent on to me. If the worst that comes out of it on GD's end is I have to pay a shipping fee, that's pretty incredible.
The shipping charge from Gundamit is so weird. Frankly, them offering free shipping on everything coming to the US was odd anyway. Seems like they must have been losing money shipping small items, ie single figures. A nominal shipping fee of ~$8 (what I happened to see on an item) is still low, and it's certainly not going to cover any tariff/customs fees. I'm just gonna avoid their store until the Chinese tariff situation settles down. Sucks too as some stuff I was maybe going to order has now sold out. But it's fine. Plenty of stuff to keep me occupied.

So...not super reassuring hearing from a lot of toy folk about the things they've shown at Toy Fair even making it out.

I spoke specifically with someone from NECA, and they're not even sure if stuff they've shown will see release.

Super. Fuuuuucking super.

I've heard that whisper as well (not from NECA). I'm not sure how much of that was just ... angrily lamenting the way things are, and how much of it was accurate and reasoned assessment, to be fair. But in either case it's deeply concerning. I've heard from one person that there may be an idea to finish up some waves of product and then just pay to store it in warehouses inside China (and Vietnam, I believe) until something meaningful changes.

And not just because of tariffs. There seems to be the expectation that the US, the biggest toy market in the world - obviously, is about to get slam-dunked into a recession where even trying to sell luxury goods like toys, especially at a mark-up over existing prices, just won't be feasible.

I mean, that’s what I would expect. If I were a person in charge of a toy line, I’d basically be hitting pause on developing new product and would warehouse it for a while.

For collectors, I expect the rest of the year will have significantly less releases in basically all lines and they’ll be much more expensive. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see like 25% as much product as is normally released in the second half of the year.

I have to say it’s pretty incredible the effect that a single person like Trump can have on people’s lives by having unilateral power on something like tariffs. Because of the tariffs, not only have I lost a fairly significant amount in investments, but it’s also causing mortgage rates to stay high as I’m looking to buy a house. And it’s having a significant impact on this hobby. This dude literally is costing me money in a way that is directly and solely attributable to him — and this is before the actual recession hits!

The craziest part is he doesn't even ACTUALLY have this power.

Right in the Constitution, Congress has the “power to lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises…” and also “To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations…”

Congress has simply abdicated its responsibilities a refused, repeatedly, to reassert them. It's actually pretty fuckin' crazy and stupid. So stupid. And it's mostly because congress is typically full of lazy career politicians that get off on the idea that they can make a six-figure salary, take a ton of bribes to become millionaires, and actually never do any work.

Looking ahead to the stuff I know is supposed to come out this year that I would want, I brace myself for not being able to afford any of it. But if there is ONE release that I would consider paying through the nose for, it would be the McFarlane Batman Returns wave. I have too much love for that movie, IMO it's a masterpiece. Seeing the whole wave of four figures going for.......what? An optimistic $250? Would the pain be less if it just doesn't get released? I think it might......

He's using some emergency powers law that does not explicitly mention tariffs (to me, if a power that constitutionally belongs to another branch/office is not made explicit in a law, then it stays with the original branch) and says he can do a bunch of dumb shit if he declares an emergency. And he's declaring trade deficits an emergency because he doesn't actually know what they are and because he's stupid and it's just so fucking insane that Congress is just letting him nuke the economy instead of doing their goddamned jobs.

Yeah, I’ll pay a lot for that wave specifically because I know McFarlane is losing the license and there won’t be another run at it.

That plus the fact that there is nothing to fall back on. There is shockingly little movie-accurate Batman Returns figures out there. When does it come out? December? If I buy no figures all year and am sitting on a couple thousand extra dollars, that should lessen the sting. Again.....IF it even gets released.

How does a a toy company with any less clout than a Hasbro or a Mattel release ANYTHING in these conditions? I'm a Star Trek fan too. Do I honestly think Ensign Nog from Nacelle Company's wave 2 is ever going to see release unless something changes? Come on.

I have just had this inexplicable feeling for months now that I can not shake for the life of me. This energy that something is off in the air. And it's been very similar to the early days of the pandemic. Just...off.

I genuinely feel like and fear we are nearing the end of our hobby...and that is the LEAST of our concerns. Dark times ahead.

I hope the feeling is just that...but...don't have much faith in that.

I'd be surprised if Todd didn't release all his DC product. Unlike Hasbro, Mattel, and others, he can't just stash it in a warehouse. It's this year or bust.

I'm somewhat optimistic about the medium term (say January 2027 to January 2029) because of this. Bush bottomed out the economy right before a presidential election. Trump crashed the economy in 2020 but had House Democrats to save him with Keynesian stimulus checks. This time, there's no quick fix. (There's impeachment, but we know that won't happen.) There's not even another election for 18 months. Propagandized base or not, there won't be anywhere for Republicans to hide when the shelves are empty and prices have skyrocketed.

This is going to be devastating, but maybe it'll be enough to shutter the Republican Party. At least, that's what I'm telling myself to get through this.

S02E08 of Andor is what is coming for the US. To put it in our nerdy toy terms.
