The thing is, there'd be no reason for Russia to release it. Not only does Trump go to bat for Russia, but his rule is the best thing for them. A chaotic, failing United States is their wildest dream come true. It disrupts global trade and destabilizes the EU. The U.S. has been world police for 75 years. Obviously that comes with pros and cons, but for a dictatorship in economic decline, it's the best-case scenario.

I'm surprised you're surprised. All we've been hearing since his first run at it was that he can't do TOO much damage because the CEOs and Wall Street will keep him in line. The entire country, minus a few enclaves of reason, was counting on the idea that every president has the invisible leash being held by the wealthy and powerful so who we elect barely matters. Well.. this is the result of the shadow government conspiracy theories; you finally get to see what an unhinged, unleashed president looks like.

A deep myth in American culture that has been thoroughly laid bare is that we as a country are incapable of true horrors in the modern era because "they" wouldn't let that happen. "They" is a moving, nebulous entity, depending on the problem. Sometimes it's cops, or the military, or the Supreme Court, or the investment class, but there's always a "they" keeping things in line.

And not so suddenly everyone is figuring out what the vulnerable folks have always known, there is no "they" there is only "us".

That's the trick. They don't know and they cannot see it that way.

My sister's ex husband is one. Certified and stamped. I still have to deal with that spillover. He is genuinely incapable of perspectives that allow him to see he's a problem. Same with my cousin, who, frankly, killed someone and is incapable of any sort of fault or empathy.

One of the annoying things about being my therapist is I constantly tell her I think I'm the problem, I'm the constant, and every time she shuts it down with "I have many of them on my roster. The fact you're asking me and you think about this means you cannot be."

Anyway. No. Fuckass McShitblizzard is a legend in his own mind, and he has enablers and sycophants who don't push back because they get a benefit like a remora with a shark, and so on like an infinite toilet boil swirl.

I take Narcissism seriously because I've dealt with it, and it gets thrown around so much in social media and modern dating like a catch all when most times they just mean asshole.

This. Trump I think is nearly a perfect solipsist. He cannot truly conceive that other people have complex inner lives dissimilar from his own. He has no true beliefs, and he can't fathom why anyone would. Why believe in something other than one's own entitlement? The idea of holding convictions to him is a sucker's game. It's why he can lie so readily even when it's obvious, even when it gains him nothing. He can't fathom anyone who would find the truth important who wasn't some sort of lower life form.

And he absolutely thinks that everyone is playing the same “game” he is, just he is way way WAY better at it. That’s an actual belief: so he does believe some things.

Grant Morrison puts some words in the mouth of Lex Luthor in one of those Final Crisis leadups where the supervillains are all tabled up together. Lex says:

I'd like to keep discussion of fascist creep separate from tariff talk where possible.

They're kidnapping legal U.S. residents and selling them to a slave labor prison in El Salvador. I worked through a pandemic and an insurrection, but this is making me feel as though I've lost my mind. I couldn't help but bring it up at work today.

The Supreme Court ordered the release of Abrego Garcia and the Trump administration refused. It's a Constitutional crisis. If they can disappear Abrego Garcia without cause, they can disappear you or I without cause...

I know there's some inevitable spillover as the tariffs are ENTIRELY a political tool to begin with, and in this specific case a political tool being wildly misused and abused by a fucking idiot and his clown car of enabling dipshits. BUT, we should probably keep this thread a bit more focused on the tariffs themselves for those that are having questions about how it impacts them and move the other stuff to the politics thread. That thread can always use more 'DJT is a fucking idiot' comments.
