So on previous Throwback Thursdays we looked at Comic Con in the 70's (
here), the 80's (
here) and the 90's (
here). Now we're going to look at the 00's. We were still at the San Diego Convention Center but in 2001 it had expanded in a big way. It was just Halls A, B and C in the 90's but after the expansion the city added D, E, F, G and H. Yes,
that Hall H. As it always did, the con's attendance numbers just grew and grew. In 2001 it was 53,000. By the end of the decade it was 130,000 and that's the number it's been capped at ever since. There's also about another 40,000 or 50,000 people who don't have badges who just hang around the Gaslamp Quarter and go to the off-site events.
So the 00's was when it got nuts. That's when movie and TV stars started showing up. When Hall H and Ballroom 20 became a thing. When lining up for a Hall H panel the day before and sleeping on the sidewalk became the norm. When publishers and toy companies started selling exclusives. When media from all over the country and the world started covering the show. Don't get me wrong. I still love Comic Con, it's still a lot of fun, but there's now the population of a small city that descends on San Diego every July. You can't get a hotel room or find a parking spot anywhere east of the Colorado River, never mind find a seat at a bar or restaurant. It's the West Coast version of Mardi Gras. There are a
lot of people here and if you're the least bit claustrophobic it might be best to stay home.
So why do we do it? Why do we subject ourselves to such a maddening throng? Well, it comes down to one thing: Love. Love, plain and simple. Love of comics, movies, TV shows, cartoons, video games and toys. Love of Marvel, DC, Image, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, The Vampire Lestat, Star Wars, Star Trek and so much more. It's the community and connection you feel with people who love the same things you do and the friends you make. You can freely express your passions for fantasy and superheroes and no one will judge you. This is the one place on Earth I can truly feel like I'm home.
