The Countdown To SDCC 2026!

....Endgame?

Yeah, I saw that. It's possible that they're talking about the Endgame re-release that's coming out in September. But more than likely it was a mistake by some poor, badly over-worked volunteers and organizers.

Anyway. EVERY year is Jack Kirby Year!

💯% true fact. We wouldn't even be having this convention if it wasn't for the King. Thanks, Rod!

Although it looks like the same Hasbro booth dimensions from last year, hopefully they reconfigured the display cases like it was 2 years ago.

Well, pre-pandemic, Hasbro had two booths. One for display and schmoozing with the fans, and the other to conduct sales on their exclusives they brought with them. Remember the old Hasbro Toy Shop?

Or, as we liked to call it "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams." Well, post pandemic it's all one booth now and it's not working. It's two booths crammed into the space of one. It's just way, way too crowded in there. I'm not claustrophobic (I wouldn't have survived six years in the Navy if I were) but man it's uncomfortable. My hope is that next year they go back to two booths.

absolutely suffocating, irritating and stinky.

Come on, I'm not that bad. I have some redeeming qualities.

Oh, you're talking about the Hasbro booth.

Carry on.

Marv Wolfman

wE1BNc7.jpg

Marv Wolfman had one of the coolest last names in comics. Everyone thought so. But even if he didn't have such an awesome surname, I'd still think he was one of the best writers to put pen to paper in the industry.

Marvin Arthur Wolfman was born on May 13th, 1946. He worked on Marvel Comics' The Tomb of Dracula (1972–1979), for which he and artist Gene Colan created the vampire-slayer Blade, and DC Comics' The New Teen Titans and the Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series with George Pérez.

Among the many characters Wolfman created or co-created are Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, Deathstroke, Tim Drake, Rose Wilson, Nova, Black Cat, Phobia, Bullseye, Vigilante (Adrian Chase), Night Force, the Omega Men, and the Nightwing identity of Dick Grayson.

Marv, like many young and aspiring comic creators in those early Silver and Bronze Age days, was active in fandom before he started working professionally. He got his first job at DC Comics in 1968 and then in 1972 he moved over to Marvel to work for Roy Thomas. And that's when his career really took off. Marv and a fantastic artist named Gene Colan were assigned to a fledgling horror title, Tomb of Dracula. Their run on that book has been called "one of the most critically-acclaimed horror-themed comic books ever" and I totally agree with that. Wolfman, with his powerful and compelling scripts combined with Colan's moody, atmospheric art to create a masterpiece that still stands up to this day. I don't know how many times I've read and re-read those comics, I am still blown away by them. They were magnificent.

In 1980, Marv was pushed out of Marvel by EIC Jim Shooter's draconian leadership style (A lot of people were) and he went back to DC. And lightning struck again. Marv teamed with George Perez (A man born to draw superhero comics) and they created the New Teen Titans. That series became DC's first major hit in years. The Titans appealed to fans who loved Marvel's X-Men and in the early 1980's there was no shortage of those. Sales skyrocketed and the team of Wolfman and Perez became huge fan favorites.

In 1985 DC celebrated their 50th anniversary and published Crisis on Infinite Earths, a 12 issue series by Wolfman and Perez that won awards, broke sales records and changed the DC Universe forever.

In 2011, Marv was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame. 80 years old now, Marv Wolfman has had an incredible and noteworthy career. He's a polite and thoughtful man who's made a lot of fans very happy and I'm very thankful he's still with us. I hope see him again this year. He's always such a pleasure to talk to. Thank you, Marv, for all the amazing stories.

Marv Wolfman is awesome. Last year it was so sad to see him just at his little table in artists alley, not as guest at DC's booth, and with no line at all to talk to him or get signatures. His run on Teen Titans is what actually got me to buy DC Comics. I was Marvel only until my brother made me read Titans.

Saturday schedule is up.

STILL no Mattel DC panel. It doesn't look like it's going to happen. Unless they save it for the last day.

Hey, hope springs eternal. 😁

Oh... it would be dirty pool to put a Mattel DC panel on Sunday. I like to skip town early on Sunday and get a head start on heading home. I haven't hit the con on Sunday in years.

Hypothetically speaking, if there is no panel, is it possible that they might just show some DC stuff in their booth?

It is possible. I'm going to go over there on preview night and start schmoozing and maybe make some new friends. I will definitely be on the lookout for anything DC.

They're gonna love me. I'm cute, charming and I wear deodorant. What's not to love?

Don't worry. We got this. It's in the bag.

SHUTUP, @TFitz!!!!!!!!!

Double up on the deodorant. Ya know, for the next guy. The one who forgot to shower this week. 😘

In all seriousness, I won’t be terribly surprised if there isn’t a Mattel DC panel. I’m guessing there are lots of moving parts when these big licenses change hands. Lots of lawyers looking to earn their keep.

Yeah, it's fine. There's lots of other stuff going on this year. I'm giving Saturday's schedule just a cursory look and I already see a bunch of things I want do.

So I'm going to have a pretty full dance card.

George Lucas

ekXcNjD.jpg

Last year's SDCC was historic. George Lucas, The Maker himself, finally made his first appearance here. He headlined a packed Hall H panel to showcase his new Los Angeles-based institution, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, describing it as a "temple to the people’s art". Oh, to be sure representatives from Lucasfilm have been coming to comic con for years, since the mid 1970's in fact. They showed us concept art from Star Wars long before anyone else had ever heard of the franchise. In 1982, my first comic con, we were packed like sardines upstairs in the Copper Room to see an advance screening of Return of the Jedi. But George himself? He may as well have been a myth. Not anymore.

George Walton Lucas Jr. (born May 14, 1944) is widely celebrated as a transformative cultural icon and pioneering filmmaker whose creation of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises revolutionized modern mythology, global pop culture and blockbuster entertainment. He founded Lucasfilm, LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and THX. Lucas also served as chairman of Lucasfilm before selling it to The Walt Disney Company in 2012. The recipient of two Emmy Awards and nominations for four Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, he is considered to be one of the most significant figures of the 20th-century New Hollywood movement, and a pioneer of the modern blockbuster. Despite this, he has remained an independent filmmaker for most of his career.

But you knew all that. And you knew that you loved Star Wars and Indiana Jones. So let's just look at some pretty covers.

And ... there's no Mattel DC panel!

That's okay. We'll get the scoop as soon as they're able to tell us.

In the meantime ... I'll be making some new friends in the Mattel booth. It's okay. I'll be freshly showered with an extra layer of deodorant. I'll brush my teeth, wear clean clothes, the whole deal. I mean, I do that everyday anyway so it won't be a problem. I'll let you know how it goes.
