The Countdown To SDCC 2026!

Throwback Thursday! As I said earlier, the very first San Diego Comic Con was held on the basement of the U.S. Grant Hotel on Broadway. There were just 300 attendees at the first event. The Grant is considered an historical landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's 11 stories high and has 270 rooms. It was built by Ulysses S. Grant Jr. (son of President Ulysses S. Grant) and opened on October 15th, 1910. These days the hotel is owned by the Kumeyaay Band of American Indians (My girlfriend's people). Here's what it looks like today:

The convention changed venues and for most of the 70's was held at the El Cortez Hotel on 6th and Ash. It's had quite a history which you can read more about here. Suffice it to say it opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1927 (During the Great Depression) and was then the tallest building in San Diego. It's now the 40th tallest. These days it's no longer a hotel. It's now privately owned condominiums and is closed to the general public.

I have never been inside the El Cortez and I wish I could see it. In the 80's and 90's I heard some amazing stories from the old timers about those early days when comic cons were brand new and no one was quite sure what to do. I think the thing that gets to me the most was some of the greatest artists in the field of comics (Kirby, Eisner, Wood, Barks, Kurtzman, to name a few)) would gather by the pool and create original art for the annual charity auctions. These guys would be out there in their swimsuits making oil paintings. Unbelievable.

A blast from the distant past:

So last year DC Studios had a big presence at Comic Con with a Peacemaker Season 2 panel in Hall H and an offsite activation called Peacefest.

I gotta tell ya I loved both. DC knows how to throw a party. The Hall H panel was well worth it. John Cena is one funny, funny guy. He could easily make a living as a stand up comedian if he wanted to. He had the crowd in stitches. They showed us a few clips from the upcoming season and that was cool. Peacefest was, in the opinion of many, the best offsite at comic con last year. It was a party with live bands, themed drinks and a great time. With the neon lights and custom video content, it was like being transported back to the eighties.

My hope is DC Studios comes back again this year. I think they will. They have plenty to talk about with The Batman Part II, Lanterns, Clayface and Man of Tomorrow.

Gerry Conway

6oBGZGg.jpg

If you read comics at all in the Bronze and Copper Ages, then you are familiar with this guy's work. But just in case you're not:

Gerard Francis Conway (September 10, 1952 – April 26, 2026) was a fan favorite writer and editor in several different industries. He began his career at the age of 16 as a writer for DC and Marvel Comics. He also wrote several science fiction novels while in his 20's. On top of that, he was a screenwriter for movies and TV as well as a producer. During his tenor at Marvel he co-created the vigilante antihero the Punisher as well as Peter Parker's clone Ben Reilly, the super villain Jackal, and the first Ms. Marvel. He also wrote the death of the character Gwen Stacy during his long run on The Amazing Spider-Man in the story arc "The Night Gwen Stacy Died".

For DC Comics, he co-created the superheroes Firestorm, Power Girl, Jason Todd, and the villain Killer Croc, and wrote Justice League of America for eight years. Conway wrote the first major, modern-day intercompany crossover, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man.

And you're probably also aware that he passed away earlier this year from pancreatic cancer at the age of 73.

He left behind a remarkable legacy in the fields of comics and television. This year he's been selected for inclusion in the Eisner Hall of Fame, an honor that's long overdue for the man who created the Punisher, Power Girl and Firestorm. I will remember him for all the wonderful stories he wrote when I was a teenager and young adult, but also that he was kind, soft spoken and a true gentleman. The halls of SDCC will not be the same without that warm smile.

So today we're going to take a look at last year's Hasbro Marvel Legends panel for a refresher and maybe get our hopes up a little for this year.

Here's the team. Jesse's looking at his Official Articulated Thoughts Marvel Legends Trading Cards™ and really digging 'em.

(24 Days Until SDCC 2026!)

So tell me ... what are your hopes and dreams for SDCC 2026? Not just for toys, but everything. Movies, TV, animation, comics, games.

For action figures, I'd FINALLY like to see that Golden Age Human Torch the ML team so broadly hinted at last year. I strongly suspect there will be Doomsday and Brand New Day figs on display in the booth on the last day of the show. Maybe, just maybe mind you, Mattel may give us an idea of what to expect for their DC collector's line.

For movies, my hope is DC Studios is there. I'd love to see more footage from Lanterns and Clayface. Maybe some of the cast from The Batman Part II and Man of Tomorrow will be there, as well. And then there are all those cool animated TV shows and movies coming out. And word on the street is Marvel Studios will be there in force. Will we at last see a trailer for Doomsday?

For comics I wanna hear more about Absolute Crisis. I'd also like to hear the management at Marvel Comics is getting their shit together. I probably shouldn't get my hopes up.

On the TV side of things, Paramount and Star Trek will for sure be there. I'd like to hear more about this Carrie series from Mike Flanagan. And of course there's still The Walking Dead.

For movies, will Warner Brothers, Sony, Lionsgate, Netflix and 20th Century Studios be in attendance? So many movies coming out. The End of Oak Street, The Great Beyond, Dog Star, Dune: Part 3, Whalefall, Coyote vs Acme, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Street Fighter, Jumanji Open World and Resident Evil to name a few.

So we'll see. We'll know more when the con releases their program schedule in about ten days or so but I have some hopes.

The character selection from that panel last year is on point. Six brand new characters, a bunch of X-Men (I’d prefer straight comic versions, but there’s no arguing with the success of X-Men ‘97) a cool MtO figure, and a few surprises (WWII Logan, Emperor Doom). I’d be happy to see that pattern repeated. I’ll be even happier if they show signs of updating their articulation schemes.

I hope the team is as forthcoming with the feedback from the cards as they were last year! You and/or Beamish were able to get them to tell us how many from the set were in the works, and it was satisfying to count them off as they were announced. Hopefully we get some more clues this time around.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up about anything. I'd like some Avengers-related figures/characters, but I don't know what the odds are there. I have a feeling we're in an X- and Spider-related period for the line. Which would be fine if they reveal a figure of these two words:

Human. Beast.

X-Factor, Graduation suit, whatever. It's time.

I'm not going to bother hoping for more Thor-related characters. An exercise in futility.

He’s not who I would prioritize since we have some ok versions, but I feel like Bill isn’t far off from getting a new classic version. I’ll be thrilled to get him, though not as much as someone new.

Fingers still crossed for a Mangog in whatever form they can make work. Didn’t they hint at him in some way last year?

Fingers crossed. I'd be pumped for both of those.
