The Countdown to SDCC 2025!

Haw, yep on the sign and agreed on what ruined it. The biggest thing that ruined comic con for me was probably moving away from San Diego heh.

I just remember the Twilight people openly mocking Comic Con cosplayers.
To their faces.
And it got worse year after year.
I was so glad when Twilight was over and they didn't come back.

I'm also from the days that you could just show up and buy a ticket at the door.
Artist Alley was huge and buzzing with activity.
Parking was fairly easy.
Back issue bins galore.

Big fat yes!

One of my first cons, I was able to get back issues and reprints all the way back to giant size X-Men (classic X-Men #1 heh), and I was so happy.

Well sure. San Diego became a nice getaway for Hollywood people. Spend a weekend there, do an hour or so pimping your project, probably a day in TJ, then back home. And it went beyond just comic book movies pretty quickly.

This was a fun offsite event that was held across the street from the convention center. Some of the cast members were there taking selfies with the fans. Walking Dead is a huge fan favorite at comic con, and I love both the show and the comic book.

25 Days Until SDCC 2025!

My favorite experiences in Artist's Alley were meeting Alex Maleev on a day I happened to be wearing a shirt with his Crow art, and the other was one of my first comic cons when I saw a couple sitting by themselves getting no attention and asked what their book was (Madman), and after a really great conversation, I was a huge Mike and Laura Allred fan.

Twilight fans are the reason I stopped going - I couldn't get a ticket! And then I couldn't afford a ticket for a few years and I haven't been back since.

But my high school graduation gift was a trip to SDCC 2003 and I spent a lot of the time staring at Buffy action figure prototypes and at the CrossGen booth. :)

Couple questions for anyone willing to ask:

- Can they please find a way to release at least the HasLab Goblin Queen headsculpt? That was beautiful and what I want to put on my Phoenix figures. Maybe when they get around to Dark Phoenix on the newer body?

- When can we expect another Infinity Saga wave of catch up figures? Funko keeps revisiting.

- Are there any characters or versions of characters we should give up on asking for and just customize ourselves?

- Are the team boxsets over? We haven't gotten one since West Coast Avengers and they are missed!

Let me see if I can guess the answers based on precedent

- you never know

- we're always looking for an opportunity to do that

- if we have it our way, we'll get to them all

- this is definitely something we'd like to revisit in the future if the right product presents itself

Thanks for these pictures SD. Really cool. This is my first year tabling in AA, I am very excited. And exhausted just thinking about it!

If you would, message me your table number when you get a chance. I'll stop by and say hi during the show.

The late Dave Stevens. A truly great and influential artist who left us way too soon. These pics are from 2005.

I stated a little while back in this thread that the first San Diego Comic Con I attended was in 1982. As luck and fate would have it, that magical year was also when a great comic book character called the Rocketeer first premiered, first as back up feature in Starslayer number 2, then later that year as the lead feature in Pacific Presents.

I absolutely fell head over heels in love with that character, that story and that art. I loved the Golden Age feel, I loved that it was based in Hollywood, and I pretty much loved every aspect of it. And that is how the artist Dave Stevens became known to me. I knew I had to meet him at the show, and as soon as I got in the dealers room of the convention, I sought him out. He was so young then (I guess we all were) and so handsome he made me sick. Seriously. I had a huge aversion at looking into mirrors after that. But he was so nice and just a lot of fun to talk to. He and I both lived in Los Angeles at the time and I would occasionally see him at the Golden Apple comic book store on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood.

Dave was born in Lynwood California in 1955 but he grew up in Portland, Oregon. His family relocated to San Diego and he attended San Diego City College for two years. During this time he started becoming a regular at SDCC. His first professional comic work was inking Russ Manning's pencils for the Tarzan newspaper comic strip and two European Tarzan graphic novels in 1975; he later assisted Manning on the Star Wars newspaper strip. And then, as I said, in 1982 he created The Rocketeer and his career took off like a ... well, rocket. He was heavily influenced by great Golden Age artists like Will Eisner, Lou Fine, Reed Crandall, Maurice Whitman, Frank Frazetta and Wally Wood. I had never seen anything that quite like it. It was breathtakingly beautiful and evoked a simpler time but with a modern sensibility. Dave was widely recognized, along with artists such as Steve Rude and Jaime Hernandez, as one of the finest comic book artists of his generation.

Sadly, Dave passed away in 2008 after a long battle with Leukemia.

There are names and faces I will always associate with the San Diego Comic Con ... Peter David, Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Gil Kane, Will Eisner, Mark Evanier, George Perez and a whole host of others. Unfortunately, we have a lost a fair number of them over the years. And Dave Stevens is a name that's right near the top of the list.

I can't think of Dave Stevens without thinking of the San Diego Comic Con. And I can't think of the San Diego Comic Con without thinking of Dave Stevens. In my mind, they will forever be linked.

So tomorrow is July 1st. And you're probably aware that July is going to be a huge month for fans.

For starters, Ironheart wraps up tomorrow night. I heard that there are revelations that have big implications for the MCU and will knock people's socks off.

Jurassic World Rebirth comes out this weekend. Come on. It's big ass dinosaurs on a rampage. That's cool by definition. I've loved all the Jurassic movies so far and I'm sure I'll love this one.

Next weekend ... James Gunn's Superman. If you're not excited by that, turn in your damn geek card. You're kicked out of the fellowship. This will hopefully be the start of not just a series of great Superman films but a new interconnected universe. Themyscira, Gotham City, Atlantis, Oa, New Genesis, Thanagar, the 30th Century, Dinosaur Island, Titans Tower, Blackhawk Island and you name it. I have high hopes.

And then two weeks after that ... The Fantastic Four. Finally. At last. What looks to be a COMIC ACCURATE Fantastic Four movie. One that would make Stan Lee and Jack Kirby proud. It will be an amazing achievement for Marvel Studios if they can get this right and could ultimately end up being their crown jewel.

Also, that same weekend, there's that thing. You know. That big thing in that town in so cal down by the water. Whaddyacallit. Where all these fan types gather and they wear glitzy costumes and swing light sabres and get autographs and buy art and go to panels and eat too much and drink too much and spend too much and they're sick the next day but they had the time of their lives and they come back year after year. You know. That thing. That thingamajig. That's going on the same weekend that Fantastic Four comes out.

I'm going to do both. I'll see the movie and attend the whatchamacallit. Because ... well, I'm a fool. But I'm a fool that knows how to have fun.

So yep. July is going to be huge. My advice to those reading these words is simple. Life is short, so do what you enjoy. Do what makes you happy. If you do that, there'll be no regrets. If you're a fan, there are good times ahead. Enjoy them.
