Star Wars Black Series

I wouldn't mind if we could either undo the brother sister thing or special edition the two kisses out of ESB
I get that. But at the same time it doesn't actually matter. Like my personal bugbear in the OT is probably George cutting off Han's balls and making Greedo the worst bounty hunter in history by having Greedo shoot first (and fucking miss). But ultimately, that really ONLY affects the OT, and not even in a major way. It's just something I hate.

Twin magic sexy time is weird, but ONLY affects the OT and only in a very limited way.

I mean, I'd make major sweeping changes in general if I could. We've talked about that a lot. But I want to separate my feelings here on the universe as a whole from my personal peeves with 'what I would have done differently.' I really do think there are things in the current canon that are actively harmful to storytelling in the setting and actively make the -whole- of Star Wars suffer, rather than just being rough on a single film or even a single trilogy or show.

See that’s the thing: if one is to reboot, what would be kept and what would be jettisoned? Like I have *always* wanted the entire “prequel” era absolutely scrapped and completely redone from the ground up with little or nothing retained from the original prequel stuff . . . but I know that’s not an opinion shared by absolutely everyone.

When we previously talked about all this, I laid out something that I think is really important for examining the Star Wars series as objectively as you can (with the understanding that all judgements about art and entertainment are inherently subjective): Kill your darlings. Just because you LIKE it, doesn't mean it's good for the overall story, or the overall franchise.

For instance, I agree that the PT needs to just be scrapped, because it's basically garbage. But one of my favorite characters ever is Qui-Gon. I have to be willing to admit that as much as I love Qui-Gon, the overall narrative of Star Wars is better if he doesn't exist. Or at least, doesn't exist in the way we currently have him. Sucks, but I think it's true.

I like a lot of the stories of post-PT Jedi. But either you have to completely change the OT somehow, or you have to jettison almost all of them. In fact, the only way to make Darth Vader, Ben Kenobi, AND the general world state of the OT make any sense is to drastically change -something- about the Jedi. They can't be the heroes of the entire galaxy and basically celebrities and then basically a myth less than 20 years later. That's fucking dumb. Either Jedi are a borderline secret society, or everyone knows they existed. One or the other, fellas.

Anyway, not to get too deep into this topic (again), and getting back to my original point; kill your darlings. Don't think because you like something that it's good, and don't think that because you don't like something that it's bad. You really have to be willing to try to objectively look at what not only works, but what makes the state of the universe better for storytelling.
Does the existence of Darth Maul serve creating better stories just because he has like.. the world's stupidest lightsaber? No. And also he's fucking dumb as shit. So boom.. gone.

I guess "looks neat" is still a big factor anymore, but there is nothing neat about kissing your sister.
My father used to say that not playing to win is like sleeping with your sister. Sure she's a great piece of tail, with a blouse full of goodies, but... it's just illegal. Then you get into that whole inbred thing. Kids with no teeth who do nothing but play the banjo... eat apple sauce through a straw... pork farm animals.

Can't fault you for that, of course, and I don't honestly have a preference between the two, so my opinion doesn't really matter, but I kinda like the idea that Greedo is a pushover. It's just another reason why Han keeps his cool in the scenario- he knows that, even if Greedo talks a big game and gets lucky at times, he's still a big chump, so he likes his odds (which you should never tell him). To be fair, I haven't done much (any) research on Greedo's EU stories, but still- we have plenty of cool, kickass bounty hunters, I like the idea of that one that's kinda the equivalent of the kid that parents make their kid play with so he's not left out. 😂

I could see that.

My perspective is that it matters more than Han keeps his cool around a guy that's -actually- dangerous. Greedo doesn't have to be King Gunslinger. Even a small child is very dangerous if they have a gun trained on you at point blank range. The idea, to me, is that Han was cool because he knew he'd shoot Greedo if given half a second to do so. He knew right away he wasn't going to give Greedo a chance to take that shot in the first place. And it makes Han a -real- scoundrel. He's stone cold when he needs to be. After all, he's just gotta get this one last job done and he can pay off Jabba and be free and clear. Nobody, especially not this loser Greedo, is going to get in the way of that.

I noticed Ezra from the Ahsoka show has shipped out from Pulse. Hasbro Pulse had said Ezra was pushed back to September 1, but I guess that was wrong. Han, Chewy, and Merrin still say August 1. So, hopefully they will ship any time now.

Stopped by Forbidden Planet here in NYC yesterday, and they had Merrin, Ezra, and the Night Trooper. I didn't snag them, because they were an extra $5 each (not terrible, I have a trip home coming up I have to behave for), but they looked really nice. It's good to hear they're starting to ship from elsewhere.

A some of you may know I recently (and mistakenly, thankfully) thought I was dying soon so I started logging my collection into an app with pictures and info about each figure to make it easier for my friends and loved ones or whoever to sell them. I've been slowly going through the collections and started Star Wars a couple of days ago. Star Wars has largely been a dead collection for me in that I rarely add anything new to it, rarely look at it, and don't really follow the figure release news. Going back through all of the figures and searching online for pictures has really reignited my fire for Black Series and Star Wars in general. I didn't even know they had come out with a more accurate and larger R2-D2 and I happened upon him at Walmart last night and bought my first SWB figure in a while. Now I'm looking around at what else I missed and considered watching some of the Disney+ shows I haven't seen yet (nothing past BOBF). Dammit.

Glad you're still with us for the long haul, Justice! If you haven't seen anything past BoBF, I assume that means you haven't checked out Andor yet? If not, you definitely should, especially if you're looking for something of a higher quality. Especially now that it's all out! Ahsoka is pretty good too.

In toy news, I stumbled upon 2 full pegs of the ISB Tactical Agent yesterday and, though I tried my luck, got street dated. Feel like I may have inadvertantly gotten someone in trouble too- the guy who came over seemed like he was either the manager or someone higher up, and he seemed pissed that things got put out early again. At least he seemed more familiar with the more nerdy side of things, as is not often the case at these bigger stores. Alas. The figure looked great in person, though!

Yeah I definitely want to watch Andor and Ahsoka while the fire still burns.
