Skurge the Executioner BAF Wave

Canadians need to stay out of a discussion they have no understanding of.
Canadian citizen, but American and my dad's side is Staten Island/Newark/Philly.

My first time in NYC as a kid, he told us to fold the slice.

I was an indignant young teen, and was all, "I've had pizza, old man."

My little brother picked it up like a Pizza Hut slice and everything slid off onto his lap in a cheesy grease pile.

You've never seen anyone fold a pizza as fast as me.

My grandfather is Sicilian and Neapolitano. He owned Italian restaurants in the 50s and 60s in Galveston. So that’s the pizza tradition I grew up on. The best pizza I’ve had is NY, NJ and Napoli. Italian pizza is diverse as well but in general it’s most likely to be NY/NJ style but even more straightforward. Basically like a Margarita pizza is the default. Rarely more than 2 types of topping. Chicago pizza is obviously good (duh; cheese and bread) but it’s a gut bomb and basically a pizza flavored casserole. Food culture has been transformed in the US and you can get good pizza in most major metro areas. But the average pizza will be far below the average pizza of places like NY, NJ, etc.

The only way to separate the real ones from the pretenders.

I feel the same way. My two favorite pizza places are in NYC and DC. The next three are all in Seattle, which was a joke of a pizza city even 20 years ago.

I'm ambivalent about Italian pizza. I had some mediocre slices and some great ones over there. I wouldn't put any of them up against the best pizza in the States.

Deep dish is great, though I wouldn't call it pizza. Detroit-style is the secret MVP. It usurped NY-style/thin-crust as my go-to.

I can't eat pizza? Well, normal pizza as people know it. Something in the sauce mixed with some of the other stuff maybe? I unno. Every time I eat regular pizza it makes me sick and that thought makes me not like the taste. I can't eat most spaghetti sauces either, or only in small quantities.

I eat not normal pizza though. I can have buffalo chicken type pizza, and taco pizza if its made a certain way. But most places make taco pizza like a pizza with taco stuff on it. The place I eat it at makes it like a taco but with pizza crust. I just tend to stay away from most of it now. Which is weird because, those shitty mini frozen pizzas they used to give at school I was fine with. But even back then, no Pizza Hut, no Dominos, I always had to order wings no matter where I went. And nowadays I can't even eat anything at Pizza Hut. It all makes me sick. Most places do now unfortunately. So I don't eat out much.

I am of the opinion you can find good pizza in most cities, but I have also primarily lived most of my life in the northeast. The worst pizza I ever had was at a Disney resort hotel in the 90s, but even they have stepped up their game. I am a pizza lover though - all styles are good. Put whatever you want on your pizza - nothing is off limits. My preference is definitely more of the New York/Italian style, but I'll eat a Greek style or deep dish too. Only thing I don't care for is a sweet red sauce. I can't do it. Some people love that shit, we had a local place in the town I used to live in that was really popular and I swear they must have dropped a ladle of sugar in their sauce, it's not for me. Damnit, now I'm going to have to get some pizza this weekend.

I'm not particularly an advocate for frozen pizzas, but I haven't had a bad frozen pizza from Trader Joe's. In case anyone was looking for "too lazy to cook" options.

I've tried Detroit style from a new chain place that opened near us, Molte Pizze. It's most similar to Sicilian, with cheese melted over the crust, corner to corner. Maybe it's not authentic, but I don't see myself heading to Detroit any time soon, but it was ok. Nothing to write home about, but possibly worth a revisit.

Grandma style pizza has become en vogue around here, and again, it's another style similar to Sicilian, and I'm not sure what the appeal is. I think it's Margherita meets Sicilian.

Sometimes, just having average pizza from an everyday pizza joint is what we want here. Crisp pepperoni, thin crust, perfect cheese/sauce ratio. But some places around here also have great specialty slices. Can't say no to an eggplant Parm slice or a bruschetta slice or a barbecue chicken slice with jalapeno. The thing I can't get behind is pasta on pizza, that's just too much carb.

Your second statement belies your first statement. "As someone living where all the good pizza is, it is my opinion that you can find good pizza everywhere." I guess it also depends on what 'good' means here. I have been able to find 'acceptable' pizza everywhere. I've rarely had a GOOD pizza outside the northeast.

Chicago and Detroit are their own level, I wouldn't put them up against NY style.

It's like I want one or the other, style and crave wise, but NY is for "pizza". Having lived in Milwaukee and Chicago, even Chicago has its own "if it's not from the place, it's still trash" scene.

It is based on the knowledge that most major cities at this point in the States are a melting pot of different cultures and demographics, even vs 20 years ago. I also "most of my life," not all of my life. I've lived in the South, vacationed on the west coast, and left the country and it's been a long time since I've had bad pizza.

The real question is...what kind of pizza does Skurge eat? I mean, I can't imagine Norse pizza being very good...they probably put fish on it or something.
