I used to have a "rule" of keeping just the definitive version of each character, but as more and more excellent Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine (etc) figures came out, I've been bending my rule more and more. I still try to keep it to the most definitive version of each costume/era, but I use little things like comics runs (Secret War figures) to justify this even if the costumes are indistinguishable from previous releases. Just curious what you all do and I feel like we need more polls up in here!

I only do MCU, but did settle on 'definitive version only' a while ago. I don't have room to get every character, let alone every costume.

For the most part, I do "definitive" looks in my display, but there are exceptions. I have different looks for X-Men on different shelves, for instance. I have a classic Morbius hanging out with my Spidey villains on one shelf, but put the 90's Morb with my Defenders/Midnight Sons. I still try to limit these though, as I don't need to have 40 different looks for Wolverine (nor do I have the space for such a collection). Even things like my Spider-Verse shelf I try to limit the amount of different looks for the same character. This is the compromise I have to make with myself so I don't wind up bankrupt.

My display is chronologically organized (loosely). So sometimes I even get multiple of the same figure/costume to do in different displays if they wore that same costume for multiple years.

I'd more likely be able to choose which finger to cut off if given a choice between that and which Storm figures to get rid of to keep just one.

I do costumes I like. Don’t need them all. Generally prominent costumes of the Silver and Bronze Age. Depending on the character they can display in separate spaces. Kirby Thor goes with the Avengers and if they ever do a Simonson Thor he can go on the Asgard shelf. Classic Iron Man on the Avengers proper shelf and Silver Centurion to the West Coast side of that shelf. Couldn’t quite bring myself to get that era Moon Knight for that part of the shelf when Sienkiwicz Moon Knight is so similar. Mostly a space thing but I do 2nd guess myself constantly

Definitive versions with some exceptions for big name characters. I'll keep a classic costume Spider-Man but I'll allow a black costume too. Wolverine needs a tiger stripe and a brown suit, Batman gets a black and grey and a blue and grey version.

My problem is they often do the same suit with multiple color variations. Like Juggernaut wave Rogue and retro card Rogue. Same suit, but do I like the straight yellow or the more goldish yellow?

I used to be a cherry picker when it came to certain versions of characters but lately under this latest iteration of Hasbro it seems like every character is fair game in terms of getting new updated versions for obscure characters that wasn’t applicable before. I’ve always said that Spider-Verse is the gift that has kept on giving when it comes to toy collecting because it opened up the floodgates for virtually every iteration of Spider-Man that ever existed. Why would I be content with just one or two spider-man toys when we finally have a menagerie? That wasn’t possible in the toy biz era. It was mostly just a fleet of Peter Parker Spider-Man figures in either the classic red or symbiote costumes 20 years ago. Prior to that if I wanted a cool scarlet spider for instance, I was relying on some customs that were made for me ages ago. These days they’re submerged deep in the fodder bin and I have much better options with every new release and upgrade. Same goes for characters like Batman and Superman and the X-Men and the Avengers.

We are eating too well these days. It’s a damn buffet out there. It would be rude if I didn’t grab seconds and thirds…

I started collecting with the plan of "ONE OF EACH ONLY" but I've hit the life is short and full of misery stage, and if having a dozen versions of Wolverine, four Doctor Dooms, and seven Daredevils brings me some small joy in this hellscape we call reality, I'm just gonna keep them.

I actually thought about offloading some repetitive Spideys recently but I was like.. eh, I kinda LIKE having Tiny Pete, Scrawny Pete, Buff Pete, and Just Right Pete in the black costume.
