Neca Dungeons and Dragons

As a non-TMNT fan, I really, really wish Neca could just stop making so many figures of them and continue with this line. I feel like I like less than 10% of Neca's output, yet their quality is usually amazing. It's really frustrating honestly.

But yeah this line is probably dead, just like all of their lines I actually like.

Dinosaurs was a property that, when they announced it, really needed to have prototypes for the core family ready to give fans at least the suggestion of a complete set one day. I think too many know how most toy companies behave, saw only Earl and Baby, and said "Not until there's more." At least with D&D, it's a decent set of retro reinterpretations. There could have been more and it hurts if there isn't, but what we got is pretty good. The same is true of Gargoyles, though them damn wings will forever be a stain on that line.

I hate that they probably aren't finishing the family from Dinosaurs but if they don't, Earl and Baby Sinclair are a good enough representation for me. It's not like they started out with Baby and deepcut like BP Richfield so this can just kind of feel like a Dinosaurs Greatest Hits line and I can move on without worrying about it too much.

I think at this point, between NECA, Super7, McFarlane, and Hasbro, that branded D&D figures just don't sell enough to warrant a line, as much as it bums me out. I suppose this is why I keep throwing money at Mythic Legions. They scratch that sword and sorcery itch wen less expensive lines aren't doing it. I do think out of all the folks who have made D&D figures, NECA's had the best quality overall. Super7 paint apps were atrocious, McFarlane's Vox Machina figures were brittle and exaggerated, and gawd, the QC on the D&D movie figures was horrific. So many unmovable limbs and such. I was hoping they'd at least get it right cos it's their own IP and they scale well with other lines.

At the time, the Drizzt set was amazing, and I am forever upset they didn't give us Cattie Brie and Wulfgar since that was the angle they chose for D&D.

Also seems ridiculous not to have any BG3 figures at this stage. Honestly not as into the game as others, but it seems like a license to print money for the main cast.

Then again, I would have said the same about Critical Role content, and those fans that I know and D&D with just prefer to spend the money on clothes, miniatures, and the other licensed board games. The Vox Machina figures didn't even register for the most die hard fans I know.

Actually yeah, to be fair, both Drizzt figures are amazing. Like I wouldn't change a thing about either version. Wish they gave us more from that series. And it does feel like they're just leaving money on the table with BG3. Wizkids just released BG3 minis and the big three baddies are going for over 100 bucks each on the secondary market. It's insane.

I remember Critical Role even talking about the action figures on the show. But yeah, those fans seem to want actual game accessories or clothing. Wizkids actually discontinued their Critical Role line of minis recently so I think they weren't selling great (though in their defense, the CR miniatures DEFINITELY got bonus quality assurance from Wizkids - they were infinitely better in terms of paint and such than the standard D&D minis they make. I always wondered if Mercer being a minis guy asked for a higher QC process for theirs in the contract.)

After all the chatting about this line here last week I impulsively added Elkhorn to a POL shipment from BBTS. Y'know, he's a little too tall for a dwarf to hang out super well with Mythic Legions, but he's a hell of a figure, and packed to the gills (to the beard?) with accessories. I really do wish this line took off properly, cos he's neat. He and Strongheart are easily my favorite renditions of old school D&D characters we've seen.

I modded Elkorn's backpack with some flat brown elastic to make stretchy straps. Very easy to do... just cut tiny slits on the figure-facing side of the pack with an X-Acto, slide some elastic through, and tie it off on the inside of the pack. I did a cross formation of mine. Now it can go on any Mythic Legions figure. Stays on super well, doesn't shift at all when posing, and still works for Elkhorn. Really great accessory for an old-school Dnd feel.

I desperately wanted to display Elkhorn with the backpack on but I worried it'd fuck with the figure's balance over time.

It's a shame he's a bit tall for Mythic Legions. I have him on the shelf with them anyway. Easily the best fantasy/D&D figure I own.

Finally had a chance to open the Elkhorn I tossed onto a BBTS POL shiipment a few weeks back and man, it's a CRIME this line wasn't mor popular. He IS a bit tall for a Mythic Legions dwarf but not so much he doesn't just look like a particularly lanky member of the family, has better ROM than Mythic, stacked with really fun gear and with a super expressive face sculpt. Just a truly cool figure. I wish they'd put out a few more characters, particularly a few female party members. I'm going to make him work with Mythics for now cos he's too good to not do something with.

I picked up most of these figures, despite having no background on D&D. I got the knight, the barbarian, and the dwarf. ONE female would have been nice to add to this roster. Stylistically, functionally, I find that they are closer to NECA Gargoyles than to Mythic Legions, at least in my collection, so that's who I group them with.
