NECA '87 Toon TMNT

Considering the claim to fame on these figures is how the designer (Trevor?) basically combs through every cell of the cartoons for character accuracy, accessories, cool moments, etc; how do they manage to keep fucking up the color of the Turtles? Literally EVERY fucking release is a different color, and almost none of them are even accurate.

I'm fucking COLORBLIND and I can tell most of these are wrong.

Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow as well and I’m not excited or anything by it. I’m sure it’s fine as NECA has a fairly high floor, but I only bought it because of the 40 bucks off coupon and was fine passing on it when it was going to hurt the old wallet more. I’m more invested now in the Archie line at this point because those figures just have so much personality, and since they’ve never been done before, there’s a freshness there. And admittedly I feel that way because the toon line is just so deep at this point. I’m at the point where I just want Tempestra.

They fucked up Raph's color in the 2012 line, too. I don't know how. The prototype at Toy Fair was perfect. What they just showed at SDCC (which Trevor said was finish product), Raph is all jacked up. I don't get it.

2012 Raph looks right to me? My stuff should be here Saturday. I'm really excited for the Beach Bros set. Got some thoughts on how to display it with vacation Bebop and Rocksteady.

Pull up 2012 Raphael on Google, and then look at the images from this past weekend. Not the toy, his actual color on the show. It's WAY off.

Is it possible the coloring is off because they know they're going to reuse these as the new baseline Turtles, so they have to make these identifiably separate?
Probably as possible as the idea that they're just tanned.
I think, based on the history of the line, NECA is just shitty at color matching how the Turtles look on screen, and also don't care enough to even make them match previous releases.

I was just appreciating last night how all my Jada next level figures color match the regular figures with the extra parts. But even pink Chum is the exact same skin tone as the 2.0 regular release.

It doesn't sound like much, but it is obnoxious doing Marvel Legends head swaps on the same characters for the same bodies and the skin tones still never match. So I appreciate that effort.

Yeah - head swapping Wolverines is a fucking nightmare. I don't know if -any- of them use the same skin tone. Each figure is a complete figure unto itself, so it's not like the product itself is bad. But those little quality of life improvements like matching up skin tones across multiple releases, is what separates a good toy from a great toy line.

I'll give a closer inspection to the figures when they arrive. My memory of the old cartoon is that the shades of green changed throughout with the various studios providing animation. It wouldn't surprise me if there's a subjective element at play with new turtle bodies and they just think this green is best. They've also screwed it up in the past though with the biggest offender being the quarter scale Michelangelo being a darker shade of green than his brothers. I'd be curious to know if color consistency for plastic is one of the hardest things to get right out of a factory, especially if changing factories and trying to match an old recipe. I'm not giving them an out as it's still on them to get it right or at least close enough that it's barely noticeable. The Michelangelo thing was very noticeable.

My Bodacious Bros set just showed up. I once again did not anticipate how HUGE the packaging is for NECA.

Put me in the "oops impulse buy" category on this one because of the 40 off coupon (like, 26 bucks a figure was super appealing) so I'm not ravenously tearing the packaging open, but I'm putting this in that category of ridiculous / niche / adorable stuff I really don't buy much of.
