In a thread I can't find, I mentioned a plan to use a half-Billy to give me more surface area for a vehicle display.

Someone whom I can't remember said they'd be interested in seeing it when done and... it's done(-ish)

Still needs some tiers cut for the lower shelves, but the point is they align nicely and give me enough room for a Thundertank.

So you have three shelves of unused space behind that? Why not leave the back off the front case and have double-deep shelves the rest of the way down?

I considered it but I don't have three shelves worth of big things.

The backing is just trapped in a groove, though, and can slide out if I want to expand.

I saw someone, with a lot of space, use 4 of those half shelves in the middle of the room all back-to-back. They basically had a 360 degree display shelf. Then they put a sheet of something (wood?) on top and used that surface space to display large vehicles. I thought that was a pretty cool idea, but requires a lot of display space in a room.

I'd be real tempted to use it as a very deep diorama space. Course dios themselves are a whole separate investment of time and energy, so not for everyone. Of course I'm thinking that direction, I just last night bought a ton of birch plywood and xps foam to build stuff for my shelves finally.

I imagine a deep set dio below hip level would be hard to see.

Unless you take out the shelves and make it all one open box. Like, a Castle Grayskull and a bunch of flying vehicles around it. Hmmm...

Yep. I did a single-wide Billy as a display space for my Haslab Sentinel in my old place and I plan to again at some point once I get all the deco done for the interior to make it more like a hangar. I've had thoughts to turn other Billy's into vertical dungeons and things of that nature.

I think it being below hip height is sort of only a problem if from a few feet back it doesn't invite you to look closer, y'know? If you glance the top edge of a display and think "oh, what's going on here..." then you'll bend down to check it out.
