I took a huge plunge today and decided to finally start collecting Transformers with the introduction of the MPG line.

I missed out on most of the main characters in the Masterpiece line, and by the time they got back around to them again, they'd transitioned to this low-detail "cartoon accurate" design that I hate. So I'm seeing this as a chance to fill out a good line-up of main characters at a level of detail and articulation that I've been wanting. Assuming the line continues on in this style.

So far it's just pre-orders for a pretty cool looking Optimus Prime and a just-announced Soundwave which is what convinced me to get on board.

At a couple hundred dollars each, though, I'm hoping they don't do more than two a year (or so), so it'll be a long time before I can even hypothetically get the line-up that I'm wishing for.

Funny that you say you don't like the cartoon accurate MPs. This Soundwave is meant to evoke the cartoon aesthetic with the color choices. I'm pretty sure it's the exact same mold as the original MP Soundwave tho, so it's got plenty of detail. Just maybe not as accentuated by different paint apps.

I only mean in terms of removing detail from the designs.

Like the MP-52 Starscream where they just kind of smoothed him out a bit, or when Super7 did "cartoon accurate" He-Man figures and just removed all the texture from the hair and fur. (And the Legends Spider-Man animated figures where they took all the scales off of Hobgoblin's arms and legs.) If that makes sense.

It just looks low-effort under the disguise of "this is how you remember it."

Welp, I got the urge to put a preorder in at Amiami for MPG-17 &,19.

I can't speak for third party MP style Soundwaves since I don't have one, but the official Takara/Hasbro versions are mostly the same figure. That includes the current version on preorder, MPG-19. I see people complaining this new release is the same mold from over a dozen years ago, but I still preordered it.

Mp-13 was the first release with red eyes.
MP-02 was released later as a TRU exclusive. TRU's had a different numbering from the Takara releases. This one had yellow eyes and was a great value because it included five cassettes.

The Toys R Us version is one of the few modern toys I will probably never part with. Quick story about this figure. TRU's eBay store put this up for sale about a week early. I got the order in, then TRU pulled the listing in about an hour, and later cancelled everyone's order. I was so mad. It's still the only time I negged somebody on eBay 😆

I was a little disappointed that, after pitching the MPG line as new design aesthetics, and showing off a slightly new take on Optimus, they just decided to re-release Soundwave. I don't have *any* transformers, so this is my onramp, but it still seems like they ignored the premise of the line almost immediately.

On the other hand, I am optimistic that this means all the old cassette-o-bots will fit with this Soundwave and hope they can release them as a side pack or something. I secretly want a Ravage to gift my Classified Baroness, but don't even know if they scale right.

The MPG line encompasses a range of aesthetics. It sounds like the Style Gen releases (new Optimus, Hot Rod) are in line with what you're after and offer simplified transformations compared to the earlier MPs but there's also releases like Soundwave re-release and the upcoming Blaster that are intended to be in keeping with the animation aesthetic (and mindnumbingly complex transformations) of the prior MP line.

Supposedly there's a Jazz and Galvatron waiting in the wings too but people have been saying those guys are coming for literally years at this point. I got tired of waiting last year and picked up Fans Toys full livery version of Jazz.
