MONDO 1/6 TMNT

Looking forward to the booth walk through videos. Wonder if this is all we'll see or if Mondo will drop some design sheets at a panel as well (would be nice and comforting after the NECA news even if I'm 99.9% sure Mondo's going no where).

Mondo panel is today, so you won't be waiting long.

Mondo almost never puts all of the portraits in the case at SDCC so I wouldn't worry about the head options for Mike and Raph. Over in the X-Men line, Jean only has two on display and that line usually gives its characters 4-6. Last year, Storm was on display with only two and I think she has 5 or 6 in the finished figure.

A Pixel Dan booth tour with Hector and Peter of Mondo. They go over the turtle line and really go in depth on the lore if that's something you care about. Dan asks about the future of the line and they tell him to just wait until their panel which I believe is at the top of the hour.

Mondo panel is going on right now. I couldn't find anyone carrying it live, but they've shown a very 87 inspired Foot Soldier plus Bebop and Rocksteady. Looks like they’re definitely going beyond 2026 with this thing, as expected.

All 4 turtles and Shedder in person. Bebop & Rocksteady slides. That was my hope going into SDCC and Mondo exceeded it by a Foot Soldier!

Showing Bebop and Rocksteady with Shredder due to go up for pre-order any time now is a smart move. It shows the line continuing past the licence change and also gives anyone who was on the fence about Shredder a chance to know he'll have Bebop and Rocksteady to accompany him before pre-sales open.

They all look great (can't quite believe how much extra stuff comes with Raph). The Foot Soldier is the only one I'll probably skip purely because I'd want at least 2 and I don't have the money or space to army build at this scale. But fantastic line up so far. Hopefully 2028 will bring Splinter, April, Casey and Krang!

Shizz...be still my aching wallet. Bebop and Rocksteady look decent, I still like the 4 brothers most of all of them. Hopefully Raph's Casey mask comes off like Leo's ninja mask, and has another headsculpt beneath it.

So why are they able to keep going? That would indicate that nobody is actually forced out of the license, right?
Could be a couple of factors.

Mattel has the master license, they don't do 1/6 and already work with Mondo on MOTU figures so they were happy to continue the sub license.

Mondo have only just started their line so their sub license was agreed later and runs a bit longer than others like NECA and Super 7 meaning it overlaps the change over of the master license and they'll have to re-work something with Mattel later.

Or Mattel doesn't actually have control over sub licenses. Sure, they have sway as the master license holder but ultimately it's Skydance/Paramount who say yes or no and NECA (and Super 7?) may have dropped out more over Skydance/Paramount raising the cost than Mattel blocking renewal. For Mondo at the start of their line the higher costs work out, for NECA (and S7) who have done so much already and face diminishing returns the higher cost doesn't work so they dropped it. Remember Playmates didn't like NECA doing TMNT and tried to block them (successfully under Mirage, less so under Paramount but NECA still had to start as convention only when they first re-started the line) so even as master license holder they couldn't block them. NECA used the conventions to show the demand and ultimately Paramount said ok. Same with S7, Playmates were able to kick up enough fuss to stop the vintage style when they started their own vintage re-releases but S7 was still able to make 2003 TMNT figures even as Playmates re-released their own 2003 stuff. Long way of saying Mattel may have influence (and not want to compete with NECA/S7) but ultimately it may be Skydance/Paramount who have final say and it's just as likely their greed killed it rather than Mattel.

There could also be a Star Trek situation involved with some companies, ie that Paramount dramatically upped the asking price to re-up the license.

Jesus, that's what I get for skimming. I hate reading long texts on my phone, but now that I'm on my laptop, I see that was already covered!
