Yeah, I heard similar. On the one hand, bringing back the OG cast would have been amazing, on the other I'm not sure how I feel about making the Ronin future their future. Guess it doesn't matter now.
Not a big fan of the Ronin stuff personally either, the TMNT to me are too much of a "positive" force despite how the original books were quite dark. I think if they did it as an elseworld's turtle film, like something where a character had to prevent that future from happening, or all 4 brothers had to prevent the events that brought it about like Terminator 2 somewhat it could please both fans if the first film (done as 2 films) were the actual Ronin storyline and at the end the 90s turtles are reintroduced as a means of stopping that particular future which would make up the second film. Time Traveling Casey Jones, Astral Projection Splinter, make up whatever you want to make it cohesive.
This is probably going to be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but if Mondo base their April figure on the likeness of any of the actresses who've played her, I'd greatly prefer they base her on Paige Turco.

Their April is going to be black with orangish red dreadlocks. They’ll use an excuse like “we said it was like the movies, not that was specifically a movie line” and “well how could we pick between the two so we kinda just RECAST April for our ‘sequels’…” and “we wanted to encapsulate ALL eras and versions of the TMNT” but…
Their Turtles look a lot like the ones in the Naruto crossover, that look like the ones Heat Boys are making, I really do think there’s a “non-era specific” Ninja Turtle style guide companies need to use when not basing it specifically on canon show/comic/movie appearances and the April in TMNT x Naruto and the Magic The Gathering series is Black with orangish red dreadlocks.
They can make April look however they want. For $300+ a pop they'd be fools to make her look like anything but what the majority of folks will want.
Even if she turns out awesome I've committed to only the 4 turtles (and maybe some mousers if they sell separately in squads) and then I'm out. The price is the main reason for it.
Definitely in for the 4 Turtles. Probably in for Shredder, Bebop & Rocksteady. Once I have them in hand I'll decide if I want to go deeper with April, Splinter, Casey and Krang. Beyond that shelf space will rule me out if price doesn't rule me out sooner.
As for April, I wouldn't have any issue if they went with her being black (I actually really like the "hacktivist" take and design Magic the Gathering used recently) but I think with this being a spiritual sequel to the original films they'll probably go with a design that resembles Judith Hoag and/or Paige Turco (likeness rights allowing).
I'll be surprised if they don't base their April on Hoag, unless she didn't want to do it for some reason or proved too costly. They've been very open about how they view this line as a continuation of the first two films so any sort of obvious change to the characters wouldn't make much sense, not that it would bother me personally. Then again, the actress changed between films so that could be an easy out if they want to do something different or forego likeness rights.
I'm late to this thread, but I'm just in for Donnie. If these were 1:12. I might be more inclined to go deeper, but between space and cost and yet more TMNT, this just isn't the line for me. But Donatello is my favorite, I have a subcollection of just him, and this figure looks absolutely amazing, so they got me for one.
Man, they're showing Donatello off in-hand on the stream tonight, and he looks amazing. Not as huge as I might've expected, might be feeling some FOMO now... Still, my bank account is a little glad I managed to not bite.
