Just saw it the movie. Overall the movie disappointed me. It's like they had all the right pieces but couldn't build the puzzle correctly. The script is pretty terrible with bad dialog (and bad jokes all around) and the direction seems clueless with terrible pacing. The story itself is decent, the movie could have been good if they had a good script and better direction.
I liked the music, the visual effects, most of the actors were good, Nick was very charismatic and looked the part, some of the action scenes were good, Skeletor was awesome in general, the transformation scenes were great, in general they had some good ideas... but the dialog was terrible, most jokes didn't land, the pacing was all over the place, the movie didn't flow right, the cinematography wasn't great, some scenes were poorly thought out, a lot of the characters were empty and pretty stupid, there were a lot of unfunny cringe-y scenes, and a few of the action scenes were lackluster. And maybe the worst part, I found quite a bit of the movie to be kinda boring.
The movie had like six different writers, which is a bad sign in general, but Travis Knight is a good director, so I'm very surprised at the results. I'm thinking Mattel got heavily involved in the production of the movie, they probably wanted them to add more humor and such. It does kinda feel like they messed with it somehow, like I don't believe this is what the director intended. It feels modified, like a few important scenes are missing, and what remained tried to make up for it and failed.
I was honestly pretty excited for the movie, I have no real connection to the franchise (I didn't grow up with it), but the idea of the movie seemed good, I like the toy designs and figures, and the trailers were pretty good. It had great potential. So I'm very disappointed. I wouldn't say not to watch it, but don't expect much. This is worse than something like Thor Ragnarok, which wasn't that great in the first place, imo.
Unfortunately I don't see this movie doing good enough to garner a sequel. It came out today and my theater was almost empty, and there were no kids, and I went in the afternoon. I honestly really wanted this to be an epic fantasy movie that would really kick the franchise forward and make it really relevant today, as I do really like the ideas here, and of course the figures. But I don't see it happening. What a disappointment.
