Mattel DC Figures

I think it is subjective, one of the things licenses do to generate sales is to try and tap into nostalgia. DCUC did that by recreating their original superpowers line, and a lot of people really loved that. I didnt because I want comic accurate figures, but it drove the sales for awhile. I see marvel legends doing something similar with Secret Wars. But what I want is a Volcana, ya know to go with Titina . So we'll have to see what gimmick works to drive sales and it wont resonate with all or maybe not any collectors, but we'll see.
All I’ve ever wanted is what Marvel fans have had for 25 years…one single, consistent action figure line that encompasses all of the DCU. I’ve always wanted DC Legends so to speak. But now, at my age, that’s not even a possibility. Not a good one anyway. As I’ve said, classic/iconic/traditional/evergreen is essential for any new line to succeed. But I’ve been down that road before (a couple of times) and I’m done.

The things I’d most like to see are the things my fellow DC fans a the least interested in for the most part. DC/WB/Netflix are definitely not interested. Wal Mart and Target definitely aren’t interested. James Gunn might be, but it’s undetermined how much non movie influence he actually has. So I’m not expecting much to begin with.

Someone above said Arion. Yep, I’m with you and will go you one better…Claw. 😜 Or Stalker 😁.

So then here is the question:
Since obviously and or course classic/iconic/traditional/evergreen will be a HUGE part of any sensibly-planned retail line, will you just cherry-pick then?
Because this is the specific era where DC/WB is going to want to “lock in” these characters as they build their cinematic universe and big-push media presence.

And that’s not going to run on stuff like Bloodlines being front-loaded. It seems almost everyone agrees that McF has gotten much better at output once Todd was persuaded to ditch niche-cool for stuff *everyone* might want.

Honest answer is I don’t know. I do this because it’s fun. Truthfully, I hope that’s the reason we all do it. But the more traditional stuff, particularly based around the Satellite JLA, isn’t really that much fun to me anymore.

If I were smart, I’d take it as a win and save the money going into the next phase of life. Not sure if I’m that smart. Strike 1.

Of course you’re right in that DC is going to want to lock in. Gunn’s DCU, the Netflix deal, and some major characters going into public domain in the next few years are all pretty big factors. How much of this trickles down into the comics is what has me concerned. And by extension, the comic style figures.

We already know that the scales won’t match. Personally, I’ve grown to rather appreciate the 7” scale. Strike 2.

It’s why I’m hoping that Todd can keep a portion of the license to produce the more niche stuff. Stuff that will sell like Kingdom Come or Crimson Mist Batman. And yes, Bloodlines.

Batman and Superman aren’t just going to “go into the public domain”. Not anytime soon. They are copyrighted names and characters. What will happen is their early comics will be publishable by other publishers than DC Comics. They likely won’t even be able to put the words “Batman” on the cover though.

Good to know.

I found Elongated Man at Walmart today. Cancelling my BBTS pre-order.

Received Pyg/Zatanna from Best Buy yesterday. Blackhawk / Cosmic Boy are expected to arrive on Monday so I acquired this whole wave pretty quickly!

I thought it was funny. Did someone find them in the warehouse from 15 years ago? Did someone successfully return them? Is this Mattel's first wave?

Epilogue 2:

Let me be clear that I’m not saying I’ll never buy Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, or Green Lantern ever again. But the heavy hitters from 1960-2011 are pretty much burned for me. I dig all the Golden Age stuff. And I’m pretty big on the DCU from Rebirth forward. Beyond that, I’m still a big fan of all the Elseworlds stuff. Gotham by Gaslight, Red Rain, more Kingdom Come, Superman: The Dark Side, Superman: At Earth’s End, Justice Riders, and so forth. Which is the stuff that Todd is better positioned to deal with anyway. When I say subjectively interesting, that’s what I mean.

EDIT: Throw in the Absolutes too. I’m in.

This idea that they are leading with the lower level versions seems weird. You’d think they’d want a big splash out of the gates. Especially when you consider how whiny and reactionary so much of the community is.

They're only allowed to do the "kid" oriented versions during the first 6 months (2nd half of calendar year 2026) so those are these "basic" versions with very minimal articulation. I believe that the WWE versions of these sell for $11.99 or something like that. My understanding is that they're not allowed to do the "collector" versions until January of 2027 and these are expected to be more like the WWE "Elite" and "Ultimate" edition figures that sell for like $22.99 and $39.99 respectively. Those prices may not be 100% accurate and are just what I remember seeing relatively recently at Target, as I don't personally actually buy their WWE product very often and almost never at full price.
