Great post! This issue marks the first time I encountered the Justice Society:
Justice League of America #37. "The EARTH -- Without A JUSTICE LEAGUE!". It came out in the very late spring or early summer of 1965. I saw it on the spinner rack ("Hey, kids! Comics!") at my local pharmacy and I was taken aback. My then six year old self was mighty confused by that cover. For starters, there was not a single member of the mighty Justice League anywhere to be found. Why was that guy calling himself the Flash and why was he wearing a helmet? Why were Green Lantern and Atom wearing capes? Who were those other two and why was everyone fighting the big pink thing?
All I knew was that comic had the big star spangled red white and blue Justice League of America logo on it, That was enough to sell me right there, but I also had to find out what the heck was going on.
When I got home my Dad was surprised. "I don't believe it! The Justice Society!" he exclaimed. "The Justice Whosits?" I replied. He then proceeded to tell me all about the comics he read when he was a boy. And that's when I learned there was a Golden Age before there was a Silver. That there was a Justice Society before there was a Justice League. And that superheroes had a legacy.
He read the comic to me as we sat on the sofa together and I'll never forget how happy he was.
And that's one of the reasons why I love the Golden Age and the JSA so much.
