Mattel DC Figures

That's why I've been so excited for the prospect of Mattel DC, I just want the options. Having these massive spanning universes of characters in active circulation at various pricepoints is the dream for any large toyline. Cheap spot fillers for big names I'm not passionate about or insanely obscure ones I'd never get otherwise is all I could ask for. I'd happily welcome something like this with Marvel Legends as well.

And in the case of WWE, sometimes the headsculpts/prints of the budget toys have been better than and also compatible with the more premium offerings. I'm a sucker for headswaps anyways.

I've always been fairly privy to buying "budget" toys. I liked those Lanard Predator figures well enough, I enjoyed the 4 inch Spinmaster DC figure I got, and I haven't bought any but I find the WWE basics very charming as well whenever I see them on shelves. Out of these examples, they have the most impressive selection. If DC can build something up like WWE Basics over the years and be compatible with the standard lines, I'll pick up quite a few. Hell, I'd probably have gotten a couple of the Mcfarlane Retro figures if they just had ball hips.

This is all a huge "if" though, Mattel has to prove themselves and build up some trust for DC.

My only concern about this is that the Basic WWE figures are pretty ass, except for the heads, which look good swapped onto the Elite or Ultimate figures, so it'd be sad if certain characters were relegated to that line only. I'll be in for the Elite/Ultimate equivalent figures though depending on how they scale with ML. I have a few of the McFarlane figures but I really don't like them.

Yeah, this is my concern as well; Mattel being like 'well, Vigilante doesn't really deserve the GOOD figure, so we'll make a basic figure and then never think about him ever again.'

I don’t collect WWE. Haven’t watched wrestling on a regular basis in over a decade. But I like this approach if this is indeed where they’re going with it. The main thing for me is that it is one continuous, consistent line that goes back to 2015. Even bigger is that it all scales. Figures, playsets, accessory packs, vehicles, all of it. That is a massive big deal for me and something I’ve wanted for DC since DCD started up. Marvel has been at it since 2000 with Marvel Legends. In that time DC has gone from Hasbro to Mattel, Mattel to McFarlane, and McFarlane back to Mattel. With DCD/DCC running parallel from 1998 to 2020. With Todd taking that over in 2022. Marvel has built a Universe in plastic. DC has a bunch of scales, styles, and form factors of the same characters over and over and over again. If Mattel can offer more stability and BUILD THE FUCKING UNIVERSE in the same fashion as they have with the WWE, then I’m all for it.

Having said all that, I’m probably still done when Todd is. I don’t think I have it in me to start over. Some people can just collect a specific character, usually Batman, Superman, or Spider-Man. That’s not me. Never has been. There are some unrelated personal issues as well as I edge towards retirement. A new action figure line probably isn’t the best place for my disposable income. But we’ll see. Mattel just might overwhelm me. Who knows?

If the Basics-equivalent line is the only way we get characters like Vigilante, Vibe, or Ragman, I'd be pissed off. But if it's how we get characters like Tomar-Re (i.e., easy headswaps), Alfred and other civilians (don't need crazy articulation for them, personally), or Geist (who the fuck would make this let alone want it other than me?) then I'd be content enough with it.

But I mean, we both know the likelihood is that Alfred gets 42 POA super ultra deluxe release with ten extra hands and a tea set, and Aztek gets 8 POA and no paint.

If they start making characters like The Ray and Aztek exclusively as Basics figures, we'll have to team up to flood Mattel Headquarters in strongly worded letters.

It's a weird conundrum. I could see them wanting to cheap out on Aztek, but putting him in the younger skewing mass market line doesn't really make sense either.
It's adorable how you think logic and sense factors in to how Mattel does anything. You silly goose. Or possible dinosaur? I'm not really sure. I guess dinosaurs BECAME geese? Is that still a thing science believes? I haven't kept up on... din..dinosaulogy? Yes, I'm assuming it's called Dinosaulogy.
Why did you get us onto this weird little tangent? Okay guys... back on topic. Don't make me warn you again.

Many visits to Mattel HQ, all after several hours at all you can eat buffets and taking powerful laxatives.
Okay, I was going to suggest we smash some sewer pipes in their floor/walls, but I mean.... your way is very industrious, I'll give you that.
At the very least, there's enough forum members here to upper decker every toilet at Mattel HQ, I'm sure.

This is maybe true. I could see Basics having mostly variants of the standard JL members and Bat-characters, with lots of heads and alternate expressions and lazy to make new characters related to them. But it could also just be a dumping ground for endless amounts of niche characters that only people over 30 would buy. We'll see! Mattel will just have to prove themselves.

Day One preorder on Geist over here.

Happy to not be alone!

As much eggs, beans, cheese, and fiber as possible for all forum members. Let's make that place inhospitable.
