Masters of the Universe: Origins

Just got a few of these shipped my way and it's funny, I'm both waning on interest with Origins, like I think I'm pretty happy with the collection as it stands, but the shipment includes Bow and Shadow Weaver so it's actually two NEW characters to the collection instead of repaints/reworks so my enthusiasm's kicked up. I think I might be burned out on cartoon collection figures that repeat existing figures though - I'm wildly meh on Whiplash but didn't cancel him anyway.
I'm the same. Waning interest except for a few new characters that I'm happy to pick up. Shadow Weaver is in my POL now, I'd like to get a Queen Marlena. For the cartoon collection I bought like the top 3 good guys and bad guys then cut myself off. I have a decent amount of Origins figures, it's been a good run.

I got the new Wave of Filmation Cartoon figures in today from BBTS. I definitely like Shadow Weaver the most. She looks great, I love her accessories, and she seamlessly fits in with any of the Origins figures, be it Toy or Cartoon looks.

Bow and Whiplash are really good too, but they do look far more Cartoon-ish. But they still look good amongst the entire collection. It was nice to get some POP figures though. Especially since just yesterday was the true 40th Anniversary of She-Ra. POP aired September 9, 1985. I was there. I saw it. I was 3.

And even then, I had the foresight to know and say (just imagine it in a 3-year-olds voice) "One day, we will celebrate this cartoon's 40th Anniversary, with toys in its honor. And I will discuss it amongst friends, probably not on TheFwoosh, due to certain recurring technical issues. But a new forum. Where we can articulate our thoughts, much like the figures celebrating She-Ra on her 40th Anniversary."

Awwww. Just a 3-year-old little baby Super Camel. Sitting there in his sand box watching She-Ra. Thats some snuggly shit.

I'm at the point where the only Origins I will buy are characters that have never previously had figures. Thats all I'm interrsted in.

I've got Bow, Shadow Weaver, and Whiplash scheduled to arrive today from BBTS. Are these the last Cartoon Collection they've announced besides She-Ra/Swiftwind? Was that set even officially announced? I wouldn't be too sad if we didn't get more Cartoon Collection after this, though I would have liked more Etheria characters. Especially weirdos like Razz, Cowl, Loo-Kee. I do still really want Sorceress, Strong-Arm, Randor, Marlena, Shokoti. I loved that we got them in Classics, and think they'd look excellent in this format. Maybe even better in some cases (looking at you, Queen.)

This Wave and Swift Wind are the last Cartoon Filmation items announced NORM. After this Wave with Shadow Weaver, the Waves will turn into 200X Cartoon MOTU figures. As far as Filmation, Mattel said they'd continue, but it sounds like Filmation Cartoon items will just be on Mattel Creations.

Opened Whiplash, Bow, and Shadow Weaver last night.

Whiplash is a weird one. The torso looks entirely new, with the ribbed details and port for his tail, which extends from the middle of his back. I always felt like it should be coming from lower on his back towards his waist, but that's not the case here. While it's solid plastic, it's also kind of flat. What's weird to me is that he has this svelt body, but his face is sculpted with a fat double chin. Doesn't mesh well. They could have bulked up that torso to match, especially since it's a new sculpt. He comes with some kind of rocket launcher, which I don't remember from a show and seems very off model for this mythos.

Bow I don't care for. He has kind of a dead stare, rather than the debonair attitude I imagine for the character. He feels bulky due to the ill-fitting armor and huge cape. He comes with a bow, obvi, and the tiniest arrow. I don't think there's a quiver to store it, but he can actually grip the feathered end. Maybe my least favorite Cartoon Collection figure so far, but I'll reassess once I've seen him with She-Ra and Frosta.

Shadow Weaver is another one that doesn't do much for me, probably more due to her design than anything. Like most of her figures, she's pretty much a road cone. She's articulated well enough in the arms and neck, has a waist swivel, but is essentially hollow from there down. She comes with a wand, that looks a bit too much like a wand in a different context, and a book, which has sculpted details on the cover and nice printing on the inside. A really nice accessory. But again, to me, one of the more boring looking members of the super-dynamic and unique Horde.

Cartoon Collection went out on a whimper for me.

I opened those three last night too and I completely agree with your assessments. There's a lot that doesn't work with Whiplash. Somehow Bow takes the same base body and style of every other figure in the line and feels... cheap? Like he's just flat and dull and lifeless. I don't love how bulky he is compared to his old figure but this one is in line with He-Man instead of She-Ray toys. And I love Shadow Weaver as a CONCEPT, but she never translates into figures well. Although I find her less clunky than the Masterverse one. With less articulation in this line in general, her lack of it is less noticeable than in the bigger figures, but it's still meh.

Here’s my complete Cartoon Collection, with Thundercats included:

I felt like I had to pad the heroic side with their Thunderan allies to even the odds against Skeletor’s evil warriors and the Horde! I do love how they all look together. But I still have a wish list including Sorceress, Battle Cat, Fisto, Randor, Marlena, Moss Man, Mekaneck, Roboto, Strong Arm, Shokoti, Jitsu.

I got the fight zone set today and dammit, I really want a room where I can just set up the three playsets forever and let them look cool. It's like childhood nostalgia in a box. so much fun. Only two quibbles:
  • it's reversible, but I worry about wear and tear on the connector parts. Just a simple QC fear, but the ability to flip it is very cool.
  • My poor swamp creature's eye paint got dinged up so he's got a damaged spot in his left eye. I may try to fix it with paint on my own, not worth trying to ship this thing back. But plus side he's way more articulated than I expected. The plastic feels cheap and too hollow, but he fits with the rest of the line that way, no more or less brittle than say the wind raider.

I have a pretty big Origins collection and, yeah, my end goal is to someday have a full basement I can devote to being an office/toy room, where I can display the playsets and everything all the time. Will it ever happen? MAYBE. Or maybe the world will be destroyed. Or the oligarchs will finally win and houses will only be for the super wealthy like they want, and we'll all live in MegaCity Blocks like fucking 2000 AD.

At this point I've been publicly running my mouth off for 25 years, I might as well enjoy the toy castles til someone throws a bag over my head and drags me away. In the interim, I need to tear my studio apart and make the top shelf available for all the Origins stuff.

Man, BBTS sent out an e-mail about a week ago saying Fright Zone would ship soon. But it hasn't come in yet. I need this Frightening Zone. All my other Zones are getting too arrogant, and too safe in their comfort. They are literally comfort zones. I need some fright to get them in line.
