Masters of the Universe: Masterverse

If I had to pick a personal least favourite? Modulok. I just think that figure is stupid. I hate the gimmick. I hate the design. But I also do have several vintage figures I just don't like at all. Modulok, Multibot, Dragstor, Blast Attack -- you couldn't pay me money to have those guys in my collection.

Masterverse Keldor looks like shit. I have no idea why they decided to go with the higher detail line being the one that gets the 'we painted his bare chest white and now it's a shirt' look. That figure looks like someone had the -idea- for a design and stopped there.

I wonder how Keldor's head and gear would look on a leftover Skeletor buck? Could be an easy kitbash into a "better" version. I'm okay with the sculpted shirt, although the belly button is an eyesore. This is just a dumb MOTU thing I'm okay with, I don't want those glorious muscles hidden by a t-shirt. Yet, it shouldn't look 1:1 like a bare chest, so nobody wins here (except Mattel). For me, using apoxie to fill his belly button hole would be enough to make it not look like a bare chest.

Maybe there's an alternate look to this Keldor that isn't yet obvious, like how obviously Despara can be displayed as Adora if the armor and overlays are removed. There's gotta be something to this, because otherwise it's just the most questionable New Eternia redesign.

In the SDCC images the in-box head is shown separate from the hood, so certainly the hood is at least removable. I assume it's a floating piece so you could do hoodless or hoodless + armorless if you wanted. I wouldn't be surprised if the cloak is removable with velcro, too, they do that sometimes.

Keldor is sketchy, for sure.

Also: honestly, the whole “Keldor plot” doesn’t do it for me in general. Much prefer “extra dimensional demon and acolyte of Hordak” to “Eternos Royal Family Drama”. I prefer non-Adam He-Man as well.

When I first discovered MOTU, pretty much at the tail-end of my childhood, I had the first few figures and those mini-comics really shaped how I viewed it. It was strange when the DC comics introduced the concept of Prince Adam (and even as a kid I was thinking "how does this secret identity fool anyone? He doesn't even have a pair of glasses to distinguish him from his heroic alter-ego"). As time went on, and all sorts of retcons were added, I just kind of kept the things in my head-canon that worked. Keldor's entire story seemed like they were taking their cues from Vader revealing himself to be Luke's father, and it just never quite made sense to me.

I loved when the comics did the Masters of the Multiverse storyline a few years back, as it showed the original mini-comics continuity as one of the universes. Don't get me wrong, there have been plenty of stories I've enjoyed that included King Randor, Queen Marlena, and Prince Adam, but there is something about that first iteration that still appeals to me.

OK but Masterverse Dragstor vibes like one of those fucking nightmarish Wheelers from Return to Oz so this wave is two for three (along with Adora) for ones even my wife wants.

If they made Dragstor MORE like the Wheelers in that movie, I'd be inclined to grab multiples. I've basically walked away from the MOTU figures for now, unless they release more movie figures.

My favorite (in Filmation, since my exposure to Adam was via the cartoon) is that Prince Adam literally carried around the Power Sword. Like... it didn't even look different when he had it. Kiddo is just walking around super jacked, looking exactly like He-Man in clothes, and carrying He-Man's sword.
