Masters of the Universe: Masterverse

So, Vintage Collection Evil Lyn seems to go up for pre order on July 23 at 10:00 AM EST. That's on Wal-Marts website during their collector con event. I guess no Wun-Dar at this time. But if you want Evil Lyn, be there on the 23rd.

Absolutely wild that they're still putting up -PRE-ORDERS- for a line they basically replaced with vastly superior figures.

You know, I dunno if i agree with that. I mean on a technical level you're right, because the joint system is SO wonderful on the Chronicles. But theres something about Masterverse I still find very compelling as a toyline. An X Factor i guess.

If they did some new Masterverse characters (Not just retro remakes, but new ones) Id keep buying them for sure.

I mean Chronicles is like more than an inch shorter than Masterverse and has only done movie figures... they aren't remotely similar.

The engineering on Chronicles may be a step up, but for fans of the original property that invested in Masterverse it isn't something that could be blended in at all so would mean starting over, again, assuming they even do more than movie figures in that scale.

Random shot here, would anyone happen to have the sword from the Revelation Teela they'd be willing to part with? Happy to trade for it.

Sure. But I didn't say people don't like them.
People still like G.I. Joe O-Ring figures, but they weren't releasing those side-by-side with the 25th Anniversary stuff. ToyBiz stopped making 5" 7POA figures when ML started. It's just weird to me to have these two lines releasing at the same time that are identical in concept, but different in approach. It's not a judgement call about whether Masterverse figures -should- exist.

I mean, come on. None of this is true.
Chronicles technically started with a non-movie figure, and its only Creations figure to date has been non-movie as well.
And they are absolutely 'remotely similar.' They are similarly-scaled, super-articulated Masters of the Universe action figures sold to both collectors and children at mass retail and through online exclusives and e-tailers. Saying they're not 'remotely similar' because the scale of the two lines doesn't line up exactly is wildly disingenuous.

Okay? I didn't say anything to contradict this. But I guess that means ToyBiz should have kept making 5" X-Men toys forever, because fans of that original line couldn't blend Marvel Legends into their 5" collection and would have to start over. I have no patience for the 'but this already exists, so it must continue to exist' argument.

And as I said to Scream - it's not a value judgement that Masterverse figures should not exist. I just found it crazy that Mattel would do that. I don't think 'Mattel is going to retire Masterverse and focus on their new line that's just Masterverse-but-a-little-better' is a strange expectation. Both because it makes the most sense from a business standpoint, and because it's what Mattel blatantly said they would be doing.
They can make Masterverse figures until the end of time if they want to. Dude, I'd LIKE them to, because I still want more '87 movie figures and I don't think they'll start that collection over again in Chronicles. I expected to see the final stragglers of Masterverse pop up in stores, but then nothing else as Mattel shifts focus. Seeing them still supporting that branding at all this far into Chronicles is just really surprising. Not BAD. Just surprising.

I can't believe Mattel now has Origins, Masterverse, Chronicles, and Core lines. That's four different scales! I don't know how they aren't shooting themselves in the foot with multiple concurrent lines. Oversaturation is definitely a possibility.
Even that is underselling it, because they actually have 3 distinct and different lines of Origins; movie origins (at a higher price point), classic Origins (online only at this point), and 200x Origins (totally different style and kind of a different scale). And that's provided they don't make any more of their -Filmation- cartoon origins, which were also a different style/scale compared to classic Origins.

I mena I got King Grayskull in Chronicles, but Scareglow never came out here and i cant justify the high price. And if I look at getting animation/Comic ones AGAIN on that scale, I cant justify it, so I'll stick to just movie ones (Or try bloody hard to anyway). I didnt get Origins either; they sort of felt like crappier MOTUC toys. The one big advantage is that at that scale playsets and vehicles aren't unreasonable. Core I get as its basically the "Give it to 5 year olds line"

I mean it is odd, @NORM and @Damien are both right. I think I was questioning the "Vastly superior figures" part of your statement Damien; Im not sure I agree there.

So I do recognize this is sarcasm directed at me, and touche....

My reaction was to the comment asking why they were still relasing Masterverse figures when Chronicles has effectively replaced it. My reaction perhaps came across more strident than I feel, but, for me personally, I will continue to buy Masterverse releases, but I don't think I'm starting again with Chronicles...

I have a very robust collection of Classics augmented with various designs and looks from Masterverse... Chronicles -at least to date - doesn't work well with those - so not for me.

That said, Mattel can almost certainly get me to cave on that stance if they start introducing new characters I want in Chronicles only... If they put Stretch Neck and Hans Hammerholder in Chronicles, I'd fold like a cheap tent. Bit I still won't rebuy characters in looks I already own. I'm done with that.

I like Origins a lot (I find them more poseable than MOTUC....), but where I like them most is in a giant group with all their vehicles and playsets. That's where Origins REALLY shines.

Fair. I'll be the first one to say that something like 'superior action figure' is inherently a subjective statement to some degree. I'd elaborate, but I really don't think I even need to on why I think Chronicles figures are superior to Masterverse figures, individually.

So I do recognize this is sarcasm directed at me, and touche....
I actually don't think Norm was being sarcastic at all, to be honest with you.

I will continue to buy Masterverse releases
I'm sure plenty of people will. That wasn't any part of the equation, though. At no point did I say 'everyone hates Masterverse, why do they still make them?'

You didn't say those words precisely but you did say "Absolutely wild that they are still putting up pre-orders for a line that they basically replaced with a vastly superior line"

So, while you didn't say people hate it, you did suggest it was crazy they were still making it when the new line is "vastly superior". So you understand where the inference comes from at least, right?

Not really.

Because I'm saying it's wild that they're making it. Not that people are buying it. As I've already explained - Mattel replaced their own line with something better. They even said Masterverse was going on hold and Chronicles was taking over. So yeah, it's wild that they didn't just finish up selling whatever was on the water, but are actively still taking pre-orders for more. Basically selling two very similar but not really compatible MOTU lines at the same time.
I don't know how you could look at that and NOT agree that it's wild, understanding that 'wild' doesn't mean 'wrong' or 'bad.'
