Marvel Legends Preorders - When and Where

I thought I could pull the trigger when this preorder dropped,, but I can’t bring myself to do it. I really want that Punisher, but $70 shipped and yet another figure to dispose of (Nick Fury) just isn’t where my head is at with collecting right now. If I truly wanted both, I could probably justify it.

I’d love to go on the stereotypical rant about corporate greed, but I have a feeling that it’s closer to the truth to say that we’re ALL getting priced out of licensed mass market retail action figure lines, at least for the higher profile IPs. This includes customers, manufacturers, and retailers.

I think that in the not too distant future, the business model for toy companies based in the States is going to look a lot more like Japan’s when it comes to action figures. It will be more of a “boutique” market with higher quality but also higher prices and far fewer releases.

Every Golden Age comes to an end, but if it does, at least we’ve had one hell of a run over the last 25 years.

The made-to-order model is possibly Hasbro dipping a toe in the higher end boutique market. And honestly I'm kinda okay with that. I wouldn't mind getting ten $50 figures a year if that's the only way to get them. If Swordsman and Baron Blood are too far removed from mass retail to be profitable then I'm okay with paying more a few times a year for those characters. I've certainly spent that much in past years on BaF waves with figures I often didn't want at all.

If older collectors are a niche market (and we are) then so be it. Charge more and give us what we want while sending cheaper Spidey and Iron Man variants & updates to big box stores. I'd call that a win/win.

YIKES.

"Here, corporate machine, I'll pay any price for what I want! ANYTHING!"

Come on. Everyone always forgets - DST was giving us unique sculpts covered in paint with accessories and detailed bases, all at one inch more of plastic, for $30.

The regular line is almost at that price point barebones. Hasbro just gave us an MJ with new hair, torso and then painted on the rest of her costume details for $40.

We're already dealing with price BS as it is.

Some crazy ideas around here. $50 for Namorita? First, she ain't making the cut. The only way they're realistically selling her is in a wave. How many people will drop $50 on her? Not enough. We're seeing Maximum prices for characters who will move product at that price. Namely A-listers.

2025 - the year I pay more for Marvel Legends than Storm Collectibles. Pigs are flying and hell has frozen over.
I've never bought anything from Storm Collectibles but didn't they just lower their price simply to compete with Jada, specifically for Street Fighter? Again, I don't know them and have never bought anything they make, so I may be way off on this.

Well DST did go bankrupt. Maybe their figures were priced too low. I agree, though, the cost benefit for ML seems too high. The amount of reuse and quantities sold suggests much of the price is going somewhere other than production.

I think I might have made the wrong impression. What I was trying to say, in the spirit of Renfield75’s post, is that I would be willing to pay a premium for limited production runs of certain characters that may not warrant a mass market release and/or would not be made otherwise.

I’m not holding my breath for a green swimsuit Namorita in any format at this point. Ryan Ting, when he was recently on the 3POA podcast, said something to the effect that it was much easier to find spots for team builders and fan demanded characters when the line was centered around single carded/boxed BAF waves.

Ryan also mentioned that the reason we didn’t get Namorita in her green swimsuit in the first place is because the the version of her with blue skin was more in line with how Atlanteans were currently being depicted in the MCU and/or the comics. Something to that effect.
