Marvel Legends Maximum Series

I was hoping they'd do Deadpool next for Maximum because it would not tempt me AT ALL but would make some other collectors happy. I have MORE than enough Deadpools I'm happy with (blame Sasquatch, Strong Guy, and Sauron BAFs for unnecessary Wade overload).

Including Doop feels like a prank. I wish they overloaded him with guns, swords, tacos, swappable baby hands, a Spider-Man comic a la the comic rack line signed by Peter, and a stuffed orca. Doop should've been a pack-in with someone else from X-Statix. At least they didn't pack in an articulated Jeff the Shark I guess.

I don't hate this DP. I think this has more value in the package than both Spider-Man and Hulk, as well. He probably falls shy of $50 of value in my book though. The sculpt is nice, I particularly like the sculpted seam lines on the costume. I don't know that I necessarily NEED this figure though. It just feels like they're charging $50+ for toe hinges and some extra accessories. I was joking earlier with some friends that Maximum Iron Man will just be the Extremis armor again with added base of the neck articulation and toe hinges with a full Stark head sculpt thrown in.

Haha! Yeah…and I’d still get that Extremis!

Problem is that with the updated Extremis, I want Iron Patriot updated, too.

And I wish both of them had a different pauldron attachment point.

I’ve been loving the Maximum figures so far. Deadpool looks like a lot of fun to me. Going to be a must-have.

I was looking at the pictures of the new Extremis and was reminded how poorly implemented the pauldrons were.

Don't worry, they'll fix that on Maximum Extremis, too, but now it's gonna cost ya $60.

Sign me up for 5!

I actually accidentally tore off a pauldron from one of my Iron Patriots (I got multiples) because the house was too cold and the plastic and glue became brittle. Now he gets great range of motion in that arm. And I can stick the pauldron back in again for more neutral poses and it stays in place. Worked out fairly well for me.

But it’d still prefer an improved design like the pauldron designs that are on a ring around the shoulder peg.

When they get to Thor, I just really hope they stick with the classic version. Mafex dropped the ball on him, and now it's in Hasbro's hands to give us what we need!
After seeing Deadpool, I'm reasonably confident that Maximum Thor will be Coipel/Heroic Age. I could see Simonson's armored Thor or King Thor, but I find them unlikely. I'd bet money on Coipel Thor, and I'm not in the business of getting my hopes up (he's a top-three want for me).

Through the first three Maximum releases, it's clear that Hasbro isn't interested in competing with its own product. Spider-Man was a remake of a figure from 2004 (or 2016 if you're feeling generous). Hulk's admittedly tougher to pin down because Hulk basically always looks the same, but those heads are Deodato, Keown, and McGuinness. The last McGuinness-style Hulk came out in 2010 and the other two never had figures. Before Deadpool was revealed, I thought for sure that we'd get the classic look or something from Cable & Deadpool. They did classic DP in 2019 and again in 2023 with the Bob/DP two-pack. We got a costume last made in 2016 instead.

I think there's almost no chance Maximum Thor is classic Thor. Too many of us have a great version in our collections already. Hasbro's always willing to buck a trend, but I think I sniffed this one out.

So let’s plot out the next couple A-listers and their likely costumes as a maximum release

Wolverine - Astonishing (though I’d still bet the farm on Battle damaged since we don’t have that version yet. Could also be Giant Sized Era but that feels kind of meh)

Captain America - possibly John Cassaday or George Perez

Thor - Copiel

Bucky Barnes - More than likely WWII era

Hank Pym - Yellow Jacket

Wasp - Civil War

Dr Strange - Avengers Disassembled/ David Finch

Silver Surfer - Easily John Buscema or Marco Checchetto

Iron Man Extremis or Pentagon armor designed free Adi Granov

War Machine - Initiative Armor

Black Widow - Could be Joe Quesada inspired again but money is likely on J Scott Campbell

Luke Cage - New Avengers/ David Finch

Scarlet Witch - House of M

Quicksilver- Alex Maleev

Daredevil- Joe Quesada

Moon Knight- Steve McNiven

Black Panther - Mark Texiera

Ghost Rider- Todd McFarlane

Green Goblin - Alex Ross

Punisher - John Romita Jr.

Any X-Man will most likely be Astonishing era via Cassady or Mike Dedato. But we could get a classic Art Adams era too

If Hasbro has proven anything with the Maximum line it's that figuring out the era they're going to mine from is damn near impossible to pin down. I assumed it was going to be classic interpretations of characters based on how they did Spider-Man. And not just classic, but arguably the most iconic versions Then, as you pointed out, Hulk came along and really didn't try to nail down any one era and this Deadpool is also more modern than anything (with a throwback to Toy Biz DP via Doop). Even general releases are becoming hard to pin down as it is likely based on what Marvel wants to push and also what is easiest to implement into the production cycle. I'm sure fan input factors in somewhere as well, but it might be a distant third.

I wonder if Hasbro went with the more modern look because it is closer to his movie appearance? Maybe that is the logic, thinking it would entice those that aren't really familiar with his comic costumes? I LIKE this costume, and if I didn't already have him in this look I might be tempted (though for $50 I still think I'd pass), but from a collector POV this seems like a weird choice. I have to think someone higher up at Hasbro said "go with the costume that looks the most like his movie one", as otherwise it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Oh I would absolutely love a first appearance Deadpool. I don’t think we’ve seen that costume in toy form since the early 90’s

Didn't they do it a few years ago on a retro card but make the black blue for some reason?

They also did a single box release of first appearance deadpool a few years back with black costume details. It was a piss-poor minimal release that only came with the two short swords, but the figure is actually very nice.

Man, I'm mixed. I put a cloth cape on the anniversary Thor and absolutely love that figure. Sure it can be improved on with butterfly joints, pinless joints and multiple heads, but damn if I don't want a crazy-good Coipel Thor. That run is so damn good. Classic can be used in more displays, but I still think I want Coipel Thor more.

Yeah, Im sure you guys are 100 percent correct. None of the Maximums have been classic so far, so it's a pipe dream for me for sure. I loved the Coipel run too, but Im pretty satisfied with the figures we've got from Hasbro & Diamond Select honestly. I just selfishly want a perfect classic thor because my display is mainly classic versions. I know Im gonna be alone in this, but Im a bit partial to this version of Thor, which is one of the least popular ones Im sure. We did get a few not-so-great versions of it from Hasbro a while back.

The 80th anniversary Deadpool is an entirely different version. It’s based on the Ed McGuiness version from his ongoing series.

The original suit has a different chest emblem and grey buccaneer gloves and belt

Ah, I stand corrected! Though really after scrutinizing the figure & images, it's more of a mix since it has some pouches, belt, and a shoulder harness that wasn't present on either appearance in the books.

Thanks for clearing that up, my brain registered those as first appearance versions from the get go.
