Marvel Legends Gamerverse

Just took a stroll down memory lane, looking at old Colossus figures. I forgot how many I had owned over the years.

That Secret Weapon Force one was my first favorite Colossus. He actually looked tough, despite that stupid logo that was molded to his shoulder.

Then the box set one was thrilling, because it actually looked like my ideal Colossus, and even though his articulation was trash, I loved having a reasonably well scaled, comic accurate version.

And that first Marvel Legends one! Blown away at the time. Now he looks like a bubbly abomination, but at the time, I was over the moon.

I actually sold off all my ML at one point and resisted getting back into it during Hasbro's launch. It was the Colossus/Juggernaut set that pulled me back in. They were just too amazing to pass up. Now of course I am buried in these damn figures.

Curse you, plastic crack!

I still have a good opinion of the first ML Colossus in my memory. I haven’t looked at it in years though so I guess I wouldn’t be surprised to find it no longer holds up.

Toy Biz series 5 Colossus will always stay in my collection. He’s not displayed, but I’m never getting rid of him. I love how massive his traps are - honestly his whole upper body is great, monkey arms and all.

There are some very striking things about that figure. It was honestly the first time I felt like a figure captured the character so perfectly, the bulk, the expression, the articulation. I really loved those early ML days.

Except risking the loss of fingers in removing them from their plastic prisons. That was pretty terrifying. I consider myself lucky I don't have any scars to show.

I think some artists just loved making Colossus extra big. It got weird when it translated to toys. The original Toy Biz Colossus with the big, stupid, dumbbell was my first X-Men figure. They didn’t make a new version for years and when they did he was this massive chunk of a figure who had arms so big they barely moved. Putting those two figures side-by-side was comical.

I recall a lot of cards and bios of Wolverine back then listing two weights for him because of the presence of the adamantium skeleton. My memory says it was 250lbs without and 350 with.

Yup I vividly remember that card. Also I think the length of his claws fluctuated depending on where you were looking at his stats either in the trading cards or the marvel handbook but I believe the trading cards said his claws were 17” in length. This new Wolverine figure is definitely taking queues from those particular stats. Hell they are so long it makes me wonder if they even dwarf the claws on the Amazing Yamaguchi and Mafex tiger stripe Wolverine figures

People loved that ML5 Colossus. Like ML6 Deadpool, I never found a copy without loose joints, so I didn't care for it.

I personally actually preferred the X-Men Classics Colossus which I believe was mostly the same figure but shinier and maybe had less texturing. The ML5 Colossus was too dark colored for me. I went through several of each. It seemed to be a very brittle figure, just like the ML8 (?) Iceman. I went through several of both of those. I can't remember any other Legends figures that I've had more breakage problems with than the main line Colossus and Iceman from Toy Biz. I actually preferred the X-Men Classics Bobby also.

Oh he’s a floppy mess, and it’s not because of time - always was. The lack of ball joint hips isn’t the only reason the Hasbro version is way superior.

Yeah the XMC version was his Astonishing costume. Same body but with sleeved shoulders, different costume details, new head, and a shiny finish. He’s stuck around in my collection as well! I just like Colossus.

The bulk in the torso of that thing is still something we don’t always get in modern figures. A lot of companies will make the shoulders broad enough, but front to back there’s so little mass.

Didn’t Toy Biz introduce a shiny chrome finish chase variant of that ML5 Colossus to Walmart Stores or TRU? I vaguely recall a variant of that figure

I loved ML5 Colossus. XMC Astonishing Colossus was a step up in metal finish, step down in costume execution. Both had ridiculous proportions. But ML5 had a swivel neck. No up/down hinge. There was always something randomly archaic with certain Toy Biz figures.

Probably had something to do with the fact that Toni’s hired somewhere around 4-5 independent artists and sculptors , and it was rare to see any communication between Toy Biz and the independent contractors. So things like articulation, paint detail, functionality and even size range were not immediately made clear or expressed and that why you had figures like the Marvel Knights black Panther figure in the same wave as Bishop, and the two figures couldn’t be more disparate in terms of their sculpts, articulation design and size range. Black panther was remarkably small for a 6” figure and incredibly pinheaded, while Bishop looked like he was almost 1/10th scale. And why was cable so undersized compared to Cannonball?

Toy Biz Black Panther was in the Sentinel BAF wave (ML10) and Bishop was in the Apocalypse wave (ML12).
