Marvel Cinematic Universe Figure Discussion

Omg how do you guys come to purge the collection.? Don’t you get sad after getting rid of them? I am a crack addict at heart and continue to strive for the 100% MCU completion goals.

Years ago around civil war time I recall selling my blue suit Captain America from CA TWS and then feeling such fomo for years that I’d given him up - especially when the suit made a cameo in Endgame that I ended up re purchasing one for a much higher price than I originally had! I also never forgive myself for giving away the no sunglasses agent Coulson head sculpt to trade for something at the time years ago.

Yeah this crack addiction is bad …. But I love it!

I've had a few misfires where I regretted selling it, but in general after a while I can just tell if a figure excites me or makes me happy.

Maybe I like the character, or it's a cool execution with articulation and paint, or I just want the actor represented because I like them in general.

The new Yelena, as example, makes the old one obsolete to me. And that one made the original one obsolete. The articulation, the likeness, etc. I never cared for the hair in the Hawkeye figure, and this one with an articulated body is an instant win for me. I also don't need the rest of the team, because I'm mostly a Florence Pugh fan in period movies and a comic Black Widow fan.

But I understand some people like representing everything.

I haven't started actively selling figures off yet, but mostly it's cause I don't think I will get much for an opened Doctor Strange from the 1st movie wave. Going to cost me almost as much to ship it as what I will sell it for. So I just have a couple display areas for duplicates that I slowly migrate into a bin as I need space. But anymore, I try to limit myself to 1 version of a character unless I want say a Winter Soldier for both the hero and villain area.

That's correct. Figures like that go into a box waiting for my next purge to my LCS. I did one about a month ago and go $600. Yes, there is the occasional insta-regret when I think, "Dang, I should have kept that figure" but for the most part it's a big weight off the shoulders knowing space is freed up and some extra $$$$ is in my pocket.

Curious to hear your opinions- for those of you who've also purged parts of your MCU collections, which versions did you keep/would deem more necessary-

Which version of Killmonger did you keep- the sorta tactical suit or the panther suit?

Regarding Vision- did you keep white Vision or OG pink/green Vision? I know there's a pretty good chance we'll get white Vision again in the future wave for his show, but as to how different it'll be from the current one, who knows?

And the Guardians- vol. 2 individual looks or the matching vol. 3 uniforms? Or a mix of both? They're the ones I have perhaps the hardest time with; I love them all, but each version of the team takes up an entire shelf that I could potentially use for others. Still tempted to keep both, but I dunno.

I kept both Killmongers, tactical suit is on the MCU villains shelf and Panther suit is on my Black heroes shelf. Kept White Vision, and the Vol. 3 matching suit Guardians + vol. 2 Gamora.

Oh, it took me a while to work up to it too, and I'm still not perfect. Money is, of course, always a factor, but it was mostly a space thing for me- I didn't have space for the new versions because I had every prior version of each character too. I suppose it helped because it got to the point where it was stressing me out not having room for things and either having to put some figures away that I really wanted to display.

So I really had to be honest with myself- which characters and versions brought me the most joy, and which ones would I personally deem the most "crucial". As cool as it is that these characters switch up costumes so often, I'm not gonna look at, say, the quantum suits from Endgame and go "Oh yeah, now that's (insert character here)!" If you took the heads off, I needed to be able to tell what character and what movie they're from. So I had to ask myself why I was even buying a figure of them in the first place if it wasn't a look I really cared for, or looks that we're only gonna see once and then never again? It's easy to get swept up in the hype and excitement for something, but not at the expense of something better.

I made exceptions for characters that I really love like Spidey; I love seeing the transformation of the suit over the movies and on my shelf. But for characters that I'm either ambivalent toward or don't really care for like the older Thor (sorry, but I'm one of the ones who admittedly loves Taika/Russo Thor more than the overly serious early one), it's gotta be a look that I can look at and go either "That's my (insert character here)" or "Remember that iconic moment?" If it's a character we're never gonna see again or they'll never make again, like, say, Luis or Happy, that's one thing, but otherwise I try and limit myself to one look per character- 2 if I absolutely have to. I think I've kept most, if not all, the villains so far, but that may change here soon; after all, do I really need Yon-Rogg, who was both kind of a Meh character, and an even more Meh figure?

Especially with all the advancements Hasbro has made in recent years, it felt silly to keep older figures which are clearly obsolete compared to newer ones- worse articulation, worse paint, worse likeness, etc. Unless that look or movie really spoke to me for whatever reason, but even then, there's a good chance they'll redo it with the upgraded tech (but seriously Hasbro, can you give us a freaking updated Nick Fury that isn't a traffic cone? My Avengers Fury has looked like he's about to take flight for over a decade now).

I had to gather up all the ones I wasn't wild about, just kinda pluck them from the shelf like ripping off a band-aid, and I let them sit in a pile/bag for a couple days; if I ended up missing them in the display, I put them back, but otherwise, I sold them. I did end up putting a couple back, but for the most part, I didn't miss them once they were actually gone, and with the new space, actually learned to appreciate the existing ones a bit more. I've kinda had a second awakening like that recently, when I started getting flight stands, or freeing up shelf space by putting some of the flying characters on the wall. Go figure- they look so much cooler when they're not being covered up by another figure! And by selling what I don't want/need, I have more money and excitement for upcoming releases, because I can see that there's room for them and can plan on where I want to put them. It's been really fun sorta sculpting my collection and moving things around and posing them and everything; it's helped it feel fresh and new. I don't even worry about making money, per se, on selling them- I know I won't get much for most of them loose, it's more about freeing up space, and if I happen to get enough money for a couple new ones, that's a bonus.

I'm down to, what I feel is, the last couple stragglers that I'm not sure on, hence asking about Killmonger, etc. Far be it for me to tell you how to do your collection, though, AP; I wish you luck in cultivating it as you see fit, whether that's lots of extras or a a small, tight collection. Oh, and I think I found my no-sunglasses Coulson head the other day if you're still looking for it. Let me know!

I remember when this came up on Fwoosh, you and I were on the same side with "shipping is just too outrageous". Since then, I discovered you can get shipping through eBay and it's actually a little cheaper than doing it at the post office, so that helped me. I also got to a point where I would rather just get a dollar or two for a figure I definitely will never display again (that Strange is a perfect example) than to have it stored away.

I've had a few misfires where I regretted selling it, but in general after a while I can just tell if a figure excites me or makes me happy.
Same. I'm almost sure they won't, but keep hoping for a chance at Colleen again as she may be my biggest regret..but I got a lot for her at least.

Which reminds me, when I was struggling to get down to one of almost everyone, Vision was a big question for me. Do I keep the original because he's more valuable, or is that why I sell him? Ultimately the value was part of it, but I do like the white one more.

And Colleen was another where dollar signs played a part, but I also got rid of all the Netflix characters because of canon (whoops) except Matt and Elektra because I love the characters. After the new Punisher went up for preorder, I did get Jessica and Luke again though.
Maybe I like the character,
This is a big factor for me as well. As I said, I collect based on characters I enjoyed in the comics (I just had to find a limit, and that one satisfied me), but I've never read a Ms Marvel comic. I love the character on screen though and won't part with her. The line I have to keep drawing is "I liked the movie a lot but that doesn't mean I need figures from it. I really enjoyed the GOTG movies, all three. And it was really hard to get rid of them, but I don't want to represent a movie. That said, if they ever do Endgame versions of Rocket and Nebula (not the quantum suits*), I would get them because they can be in my Avengers group AND I really connected with both characters way more than the others. I could see getting pre-sweater Holiday Special Drax and Mantis because I love them in that, but at that point I know I'll end up with "I may as well get that because I have these" and I'm back at the beginning.

Eternals is the other big one. I enjoyed that movie more than most, it seems, but really couldn't justify keeping jiT the ones I liked. Realy felt more like an all or none thing. And besides:

or I just want the actor represented because I like them in general.

I almost went with that. It would have meant keeping half the Eternals, but I knew I wouldn't be happy with half, so I went with none. And it led me to really define what I want to represent on the shelf. And that why I don't have unmasked figures because I want Iron Man not Robert Downey Jr. So, I can enjoy a movie, even love it, and same with actors, but it's the character I have to have connected with that earns a spot on the shelf, for me.

And I think responding to you guys with my rules isn't me saying my way is THE way, but reaffirming to myself this is what makes ME happy.
The new Yelena, as example, makes the old one obsolete to me. And that one made the original one obsolete.
Exactly the same.
I never cared for the hair in the Hawkeye figure
And that's what's funny to me, I loved her hair on the show..it didn't work on the figure..and I didn't like her outfit either. The thunderbolts one is kinda plain but totally works.

I would not mind having a second Yelena though, and I would get one from Black Widow if they got her body type and facial likeness better. The white costume with vest really stands out. The Thunderbolts are going on the Avengers shelf, but I also have a second Black Widow on my street level shelf to be by Matt, so I wouldn't mind having a Yelena there, especially since it would mean she'd be between her sister and Kate Bishop.

It probably seems severely overboard to lay so much thought and so many rules on a "fun hobby", but what I enjoy about my collection is it's under my control. Not to get too extreme with it, but sometimes things in life make me turn to the shelves and really appreciate having this one aspect where I can dictate every aspect about it.

The other thing I have is the PlayStation Jurassic World Evolutions game, sandbox version. After a terrible day a work, it's comforting as hell laying out a dinosaur park exactly the way I want to, heh.

*I forgot I had a dangling asterisk. it's funny how much I DON'T like uniformity in my collection. I don't want my Avengers to match, I don't want the guardians to match**, and I don't even like when the X-Men match!

**Nebula is the big issue for me with both GOTG3 and the Quantum suits. Nebula is NOT the same height as Mantis or Black Widow. Scale is a big part of my OCD and probably played a factor in not liking the GOTG3 figures.

Same, obviously, but that's okay too, damnit.

Same again.
stressing me out
This was a big part of it for me. The collection is supposed to bring me joy, not anxiety. I also hate when it becomes simply buy buy buy. I want to be excited for the new announcements, not stressed at spending the money or figuring out how I'll fit that one on the shelf because it's already crammed. (And I realize now, again I guess, that's why I laid out the 'characters I connected with in the comics' concept, because it allowed me to make a list the cross names off of. For instance, if they make Hobgoblin because he's in Spider-Man 4, then awesome, I get him and cross him off. If they make Spot, I skip because he isn't on the list. Having it open and determined by who shows up in the movies, rather than who I want to show up, wasn't making me happy. That said, I'll still allow myself a Red Guardian or Kamala Khan.)

But yeah, tipping the habit toward joy rather than compulsion, or especially anxiety, was crucial for me. When collecting stresses me out, I consider giving it up entirely.
So I really had to be honest with myself- which characters and versions brought me the most joy
Right. Whatever that rule needs to be, or wherever that line needs to be drawn, it's a personal decision. If that means one of EVERYBODY, or a whole, complete MCU collection, so be it. And I definitely get why that would be fun. Money and space are a big reason I don't, but I also believe in discipline for myself.
I made exceptions for characters that I really love like Spidey
Same, though I was probably the only person who didn't like the final scene costume in No Way Home as much as his Far From Home suit, so I did sell that one off. And I didn't think the homemade suit looked as cool in figure form, so that one went as well. and Night Monkey. But if they do a symbiote Peter, I'll definitely add that one.
I had to gather up all the ones I wasn't wild about, just kinda pluck them from the shelf like ripping off a band-aid, and I let them sit in a pile/bag for a couple days
I did this as well! I'm actually doing it with my Joe Classified shelf right now!

I find the same to be true for me as well. It's really reinvigorated the hobby for me.

also, @altcunningham, if I were able to 'like' signatures, I absolutely would on yours.

I saw the Electro figure in person for the first time and I was so tempted but he seems so pricey for what you get. He did make for a great boxed presentation on the shelf though. My MCU figure purchases are few and far between these days though so I left him behind for now. I'm hoping he will hit clearance. I think the last MCU I bought prior to him was Doc Ock and Goblin.

Killmonger was a tough call but I kept the 2 pack panther suit, the one with the really good Michael B Jordan head. But I don't think you could go wrong either way.

I kept the 2 pack Vision because of the more classic colors, but I think the white one is a better figure overall. I may need to revisit that decision. Especially since my only comic Vision is also the classic colors....might as well mix it up.

I think the GOTG Vol. 2 figures are some of the best Hasbro has done.....like, since taking over the toy line. Gamora, Nebula, and Mantis are all beautifully painted. Those figures are what, 10 years old? And they still look like a million bucks. A lot of the times I'm a sucker for uniformity but the colors on the Vol. 3 figures are nowhere near accurate. Personally, this one's not even close.

I was prepared to be a little underwhelmed by him, and I guess I kinda am (even though I do quite like the figure). He's definitely one that kinda comes alive in the presentation- if you have any other electric effects lying around, adding them to him can really help. I totally forgot I got the first Gamerverse Miles Morales ages ago, and though I've since sold him, I still have his yellow electric hands, and they do look quite nice on Electro. If/when he hits a sale, I'd say he's certainly worth it.

Did my first ever "customization" yesterday and painted my own suited Bully Maguire. I put it in quotes because it was about as simple as you can possibly get- just a couple coats of paint and varnish- but hey, for someone like me with negative skillz, I felt like Picasso up in there! Obviously still gotta clean it up a bit- remove the little bits of peeling/bunched up paint, get the little bits of paper towel off, clean up the neck, and I wanna add a bit more matte coating, but I'm proud of myself. Didn't remove every single limb at the joints, which I probably should've- the joints are where the paint is worst, but it felt like some of them were gonna rip after the hot water bath, and I didn't wanna damage him beyond repair; if nothing else, it leaves me room for improvement. I'll never have the skills of all the phenomenal customizers I see online, but being able to fix up little nits and picks I have here and there would be nice. Also means I can save a bit of money on a new Black Suit Spidey and still make use of the emo head. Didn't spend too much time (or any, really) bothering to pose him, so just pretend like he's dancing! 😅

(Not sure if I posted the photos correctly- my apologies if not)

Oh, and @AustinPowers , I did find that Coulson head without the sunglasses if you still need him!
