MAFEX Marvel Figures

The prices on the Mafex are getting to be untennable. I'm sure this has multiple factors, but I will never shell out htat kind of cash unless one of these figures is the ULTIMATE, near perfect version of any of these characters. I have not seen one such Mafex figure since Gambit. Magneto was close, but a little undersized. Ice man and Punisher have little things off about them, and I don't know how they will scale yet either.

I haven’t seen those exclusives go up for sale yet but I remember seeing prices for those and they are not cheap. I want to say that the Batman and the Scarlet Spider were expected to cost around $124 US? And that is minus any kind of finders fee if you are ordering from a place like Nin-Nin Game. I don’t know if these are worth that much value. So yeah if you are looking for a Scarlet Spider, you are better off getting the upcoming SHF version. Even if you are not a fan of the the cel shading it’s still $40 less than the Mafex version at just the base price without any surcharges, despite all that extra attention to detail. And it should be around the same size too. Both figures are listed as 160mm. Not to mention there is the added benefit of immediate availability. The SHF scarlet is on Hobby-Genki right now for preorder and you don’t have to fuss about it.

Err, those prices are WAY higher than what I've actually seen. BBTS has Scarlet Spider up for $110, and nin-nin-game had him for $74 translated to USD from 10,890 Japanese Yen. Hobby Genki has him for that same $74 price right now.

That’s for the SHF version. I’m saying the Mafex con exclusive 2.0 version is higher priced. There are two different import Ben Reilly figures on sale at the moment

Scarlet Spider is available for the asinine price of $150 from a site called Osaka Momma. 20% off with the code "Hotfigz24" if anyone wants to bite the bullet. Batman is sold out at the same price.

Yeeesh. This is exactly what I’m talking about. If I had to choose between either the Mafex or SHF Scarlet Spider, especially since they are both imports and are cornering the same market I’m going to with the SHF version. On a technical level I have no familiarity with this version of Ben because I never watched ATSV but I do like the cel shading because it reminds me of the comics and it has the more muscular build but also it’s like $80 cheaper in some cases. And that’s not even including finders fees, taxes, possible tariffs and shipping necessary just to purchase the Mafex. Pretty easy decision to make. Hell I can justify purchasing two SHF Scarlet Spider figures for the same price as one Mafex.

Wow, wonder what's new in the 2.0?

I also wonder if Medicom is doing all of these 2.0 versions to skirt the Japanese law that prevents manufacturers from raising MSRP on items unless they petition the government to do so. Inflation has been hefty the past few years, so I could see them wanting to raise prices instead of doing re-releases under the old price points.

That law always seemed short-sighted. Markets change, so the idea of keeping prices static for a long time is odd. There's definitely no equivalent to that law in America, and I don't think there ever has been.

The only thing that’s new with the 2.0 scarlet spider is the paint job and the classic hoodie. And the Batman actually has less stuff outside of the new paint job and one alternate head was switched. But they dropped the diving gear parts and reduced the figure to one neck piece without the hooks on the shoulders.

There really is no incentive to get the exclusives if you think about it because you are getting less to equal value compared to a traditional mass retail figure by mafex’s standards but the price is nearly twice as much. Just consider the last exclusives they did. There was the Dark Knight Returns silhouette 2-pack with Superman vs Armored Batman and the Spider-Man Web-Man variant. Both of them are absolutely useless

That’s exactly it. See also Bandai’s Prequel reissues adding in cloth robes and sabre swish effects to justify it as being different to the original release.

If that's the case I wonder what the Japanese government counts as a new product. The changes we're seeing to this Scarlet Spider are exactly the kinds of minor tweaks they usually do when they re-release a figure that keeps the same product number. For example their original comic Spidey #075 got tweaked three or four times in more noticeable ways than these apparent Scarlet Spider tweaks and all of those tweaks kept the 075 product number.

About two years ago they re-released their two Boba Fett figures from Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and both kept the same release number and were MUCH cheaper than Mafex figure releases at the time cost. I think Mafex figures were around $70 to $80 retail at the time, but those two only cost $50 to $60 since they first released back in 2016 and are still available on BBTS for $75 as their full price.

I mean I don’t think tweaks are required to justify a rerelease. Look at Hush Batman. That figure has been rereleased around 6 times and the last time it had an update was when they tweaked the cape and neck cowling in 2021. Since then it’s been a straight reissue and it’s gradually gone up in price since then. At its current value, it’s $50 more than what it used to be in 2020 at retail without much justification for it.

I came across this video on YouTube today, which has probably more than likely been shared here already considering it’s almost two weeks old. But Kaiju Daddy does a good job evaluating the pros and cons of both Scarlet Spider figures that are currently on the market right now. Worth a watch if you have some time to kill this evening.

Not Marvel but the MAFEX John Wick figures are fantastic. I honestly hope Sofia isn't super overpriced. I paid alot for John, more then I should've, and I would really like to have Sofia and her dogs.

Oof. I wish I liked that Punisher. Alas, I do not. The chest is too exaggerated, and the shoulders stick out way too far. Not too keen on the heads either. I'll stick with my ML ones, unless they do Tom Jane.

Where has it gone up? The law only applies to retailers in Japan since any nation's laws only apply to their own citizens; are you talking about retailers outside of Japan?

And noting that I wondered as soon as Medicom re-issued Boba Fett why BBTS was selling it so cheap. I assumed they would bump it up to the price of every other Mafex figure at the time, but they didn't. But the re-issue never did sell out and has been constantly available for years so maybe they knew something about how many Medicom made or something.
