MAFEX Marvel Figures

Do HLJ or Hobby Genki charge up front or when it ships? I've got too much to buy right now to drop $100 on something that isn't coming out for a year or more.

Hobby-Genki charges when it ships - make sure to select "Buy Now Pay Later." I also ask it to go into "My Private Warehouse" in case I want to bundle ship it with other things (currently sitting on Amazing Yamaguchi Agent Venom reissue, Mafex Tobey and brown Wolverine waiting to ship).

Is it supposed to send me to Paypal when I didn't click pay with Paypal?.

Edit: Nevermind I didn't click Buy Now Pay Later like you explicitly told me to do!

I don't know ANY Japanese companies that charge up front on pre-orders.

I also don't know of any American ones, either, except one--Nerdzoic. And if you cancel a pre-order with him you lose part of what you paid or are forced to take store credit.

BBTS now has the pair up for $135 with an NRD required upfront of $13.50. This price does include a tariff surcharge, so at least you won't be paying more than that, but damn.

AmiAmi, Hobby Link Japan, and Hobby Search won’t charge you until it’s in. N2G are often cheaper than the others but want to be paid off 14 days before the announced release date, which is not ideal for Medicom stuff as most of their stuff frequently slips by at least 1-4 months.

I would never in a million years preorder from Nerdzoic, especially in these uncertain times in the toy industry. Could be the next Dorkside or Megalopolis.

One weird thing with Hobby-Genki is that they seem to only allow preorders without paying upfront on a certain amount of units of any particular item - or maybe only for a certain amount of time? I tried to preorder something last year and it kept prompting me to pay in full - I emailed their customer service and they let me know that the "Buy Now Pay Later" option (their version of a non-paid preorder) was no longer available for that particular item. Not sure how broadly that applies to all items, or if they even still do it, but I found it odd and confusing. Generally though if you preorder from them in the first few weeks something is listed there's no trouble.

Well that explains why it wouldn't let me pay later for the A-Train I just tried to preorder. Even though it said "pay later" on the picture. I emailed them about it so we will see what they say.

Yep, that's exactly what I experienced. It was an item that had been available for preorder for a while and the page still showed "Pay Later." It's a weird system. Otherwise, I really like buying from them. Not the fastest to ship, but the price is right and they are responsive. The "notify me when in stock" feature works really well too, so if you can't preorder I'd just sign up for an alert and buy it when it comes in.

I always preferred Hobby Link Japan over Ami Ami due to their Private Warehouse feature and easy cancellation policy. I’m not familiar with Hobby-Genki, but with prices going up and my purchases becoming fewer and further between, I should probably be shopping around a bit more.

I usually go with HLJ, but I kind of like AmiAmi's system where they send an invoice and give you seven days to pay. It gives me a chance to decide where I want the payment to come from, while my HLJ payment is set up through PayPal connected to a checking account. Amiami's set up will allow you to use PayPal's pay in four, if you'd like to go that route

Interesting, had no idea they did these. Is it any good, and how's the articulation? Looks vaguely like a Hot Toys figure. Did they do other figures like this?

Honestly, I never opened him. I still have it and have it listed for sale on ebay after it has been sitting in my closet for a decade. It has one of those window displays that you can open like a book and looks cool, but doesn't look terribly articulated - but hard to tell due to the suit. I'm just not really into that scale or imports, in general. I only entered a token bid never expecting to end up with it. I think that they did a fair number of these including Batman, Joker, Harley, Red Son Superman... I didn't really follow them either, just ended up with this one as a fluke.

I've never purchased anything from Nerdzoic but do occasionally like to watch videos on his YouTube channel. He seems like a relatively likable and relatable guy.

The one site that I deal with frequently that charges upfront for pre-orders is the McFarlane Toy Store. Drives me crazy. It also doesn't help that they have no free shipping at any purchase level. They also tend to be slow, as they'll create a label and it will sit for days before it ships. I try to avoid them but they do tend to be relatively generous with $20 off coupons and sometimes their bundle pricing and ongoing 10% off code makes purchasing through them more cost effective even with the shipping charges. They've also occasionally thrown in a free figure (usually damaged packaging) in my shipments. Another downside is that you actually have to call them to cancel any pre-orders. So some good, some bad.

Yeah, McFarlane is the worst with immediate charging, especially because many of their items go up for sale unexpectedly or with only a few days notice. And a lot of stuff sells out immediately, so you can't really think about it. And it tends to be one after another after another for a few weeks before slowing down for a month or two. Kind of feels like the items are made to order.

Very much prefer 3-4 lead times on preorders.
