I don't think he even got a second figure until the light-up one with the rubbery coat. That wave had a couple much-needed upgrades in it including Juggernaut and I think it was our first Psylocke in the line too. I had the 10" version of that first Gambit too which was actually really nice for the time. He had a pleather coat instead of a cheap, flimsy, plastic one and they painted his gloves the right color.I can't believe how long I had to limp along on that Gambit figure.
I don't think I got an update until the Robot Fighters one with no coat. And that was the wave they tried to go all Playmates McFarlane with weak artic and dumb poses.
I wish I liked his unmasked head sculpt more.
Seems clear to me they went with Byrne art as their reference as both masked heads and the unmasked head match his art pretty well, and that makes sense given that Byrne introduced the brown costume. The grinning head is particularly all Byrne.
Not a fan of Byrne? I've always found him to be divisive--some love him, others can't stand him.

Wouldn’t this be modeled after Jim Lee’s art? Wolverine has the X on his belt buckle and that wasn’t established until after X-Men was rebooted in 1991. Prior to that he just had the classic buckle. Also Byrne established the “triangle” shaped v cut on his chest, not the more tapered design that has become more of a staple with the brown costume
Possibly. I'll go back and compare the art of both Lee and Byrne to the figure and see. I'm sure Lee was also inspired by Byrne so the elements of their art may be more similar than I realized, and when I think I'm seeing Byrne I could actually be seeing Byrne through a Jim Lee prism.
I should clarify that it's not the head sculpt or style that I dislike, it's the expression. I don't want to display any figure with their mouth ajar like that.Seems clear to me they went with Byrne art as their reference as both masked heads and the unmasked head match his art pretty well, and that makes sense given that Byrne introduced the brown costume.
