Last Series Watched

Their plan for each season is to jump back 27 years and follow the previous generation, then again, so each season will be something of a standalone with new casts.

Pluribus is the only series I've been watching lately. Very strong first season, particularly the most recent episode. Caught a bit of Welcome to Derry since my son watches it- looked pretty good from what I saw but overall not my jam, so I doubt I'll actively watch it. On the fence about watching Fallout S2. I will probably give it a go despite not loving the first season.

Glad to see you back here.

I'm enjoying Pluribus. This is probably a bit of a hot take, but I like the pacing. It's not breakneck, and it's not intentionally stretching a thin plot. Things are happening at a natural pace. As strange as it is to say this about dystopian science fiction, it's a good hangout show.

I'm about as on the fence about Fallout as a person could be. I decided to give the second season a shot, mostly out of adoration for Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins.

Season two still feels more like a video game than I'd like, but I thought the writing was better.

Gonna all kick off next week I guess, then the dreaded 2 year wait begins...

That moment made me laugh out loud (a rarity for me). The long waits between prestige TV seasons is killing me.

Thank you, TSI.

I agree with you on all fronts regarding Pluribus' pacing and Fallout. I started watching S2E1 but got pulled away about halfway through. Haven't returned yet, but I'm sure I will over the coming week.

Pluribus seems purposefully slow to maximize the emotional impact. I think the pacing also brings home the impact of loneliness. That said, I do think at the end of the season I'll go "that's it?" I love having a weekly show to talk about with co-workers.

Fire couple of episodes of Fallout are pretty good - the writers of this who hate corporate simps in a way I really appreciate. Even if they ARE writing a show for Amazon. (Nobody's perfect.)

New theory on Stranger Things: I was convinced after the first four episodes this season that all of S5 was written by AI, but the plot is wonky/messy in a way that is human. The DIALOGUE is terrible in a way that makes me think they had that infamous Netflix second-screen-viewer mandate pushed on them and instead of rewriting, they just ran their own dialogue through ChatGPT and asked it to make it more obvious or requiring less attention to detail. Because the dialogue isn't bad in the way a bad human writer makes mistakes. It's got an assembly line lack of feel to it.

I still have 2 episodes of Stranger Things, but the inter personal drama feels really forced. I'm not worried about love triangles - it's the endgame.

Also liking Fallout. I only played 4 after the first season, but they really seem to have captured the spirit of the franchise without slavishly telling the same story.

The stuff with Jonathan, I will agree, but... I don't know if this is a spoiler but for me, someone who is really just enjoying the ride, I felt like these last three episodes finally put that to bed in a satisfying way. These episodes really cleared the table and now it's time for dessert.

Man I am a sucker because I'm really enjoying this season.
Honestly if you're enjoying it, I'm glad. For me the plot stuff I don't like I could overlook - it is FAR from the first show I've loved that didn't stick the landing. Landings are hard, especially in an industry that won't let you predetermine how many seasons you're writing for.

But it's the dialogue that feels so alien to me. And the reason why I don't think it was all written by AI is it's not even - like Winona has some pretty human-feeling dialogue in E5, but some characters feel really... distant? from the script. Hopper, Jonathan, and Nancy all don't sound like themselves and poor Will's been turned into an exposition machine. (Some of the cast are handling it better than others - Joe Keery is busting his ass over there, Gaten and Sadie are doing the best they can. I swear Harbour sounds actively annoyed or bored.

(And FWIW, dialogue, professionally, has been my specialty. I've been brought in to script doctor dialogue before when it feels wooden. I'm just super over-tuned to when dialogue feels clang-y in my ears.)
