Last Game You Played

Hades.

So I can farm Chronos, but still struggle on Typhon.

Is there a point I should ignore going Down and focus on Up? I feel a little directionless at this point. Right now my motivation is collecting the rest of the items from the gods for the cabinet.

I've been playing a ton of Necesse with a friend and it's incredible! It's Terraria meets Rimworld-lite. Also a little Skate here and there. And VEIN, a first person Project Zomboid-type survival game in Early Access.

Due to a lack of energy and overall focus from being pulled in a lot of directions by life lately, I haven't really had much time to play games. My poor PS5 has sat mostly unused since I got it. But I did finally pick up a copy of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart for the PS5, and I'm really liking it. It's fun to switch on and switch off. Always had a special place in my heart for the Ratchet and Clank games- they're fun platformers with some great combat and some really silly humor. Platformers of any sort are certainly my comfort zone and happy place; I've been meaning to pick up a copy of Astro Bot

This is spot on. And SO many games do it, even games that I really like. He touches on the one I actually hate the most, which is when you're forced to WIN a boss fight so that the boss can defeat you in a cutscene afterwards. That one legitimately fills me with rage.

Minor Hades II spoilers below.

You'll get a piece of dialogue soon (from Hecate, I think) indicating that you can go whichever way your heart desires. I'd recommend chasing whatever materials you need for weapon unlocks, incantations, arcana cards, etc.

The surface is dramatically more difficult than the underworld. I probably had four or five Chronos clears before I got Typhon. Prometheus was the real obstacle for me. Typhon's no joke, but once I beat Prometheus without burning all my death defiances, I killed Typhon within 10 more tries.

I believe you had to complete each region five times to finish the main story.

I started getting more incantations after my second Typhon kill last night, so I must be moving the needle.

Trick Knives can be ludicrous.
Is the Sister Blades your favorite weapon? I did most of my early game damage with them and the Witch's Staff. With the hidden aspects unlocked, I'm happy to use any weapons.

My favorite early game aspects: Mel (Blades), Circe (Staff), Mel (Black Coat), Charon (Axe), and Medea (Skull). The latter two are arguably the strongest aspects in the game. I have the most fun with Charon. Medea is straight-up broken if you spam attack-special-attack-special.

Funny enough, I didn't fuck with omega moves or Selene's hexes until after I beat the game. Like the cast in Hades, I wrote them off as mechanics I didn't understand or need because I was doing good damage elsewhere. Big mistake. For that reason, I hated the Umbral Flames until I unlocked the hidden aspect and began spamming the omega special. It's amazing to me that with the Sister Blades, the game is very button-mashy. With the Flames, you glide around the battlefield without ease. Different weapons change the core gameplay to a surprising degree.

I polished off Hades II. Got the final achievement in just under 85 hours. What a game. It gets the full 10/10 from me.

And then Halo: Reach. If I could recommend one Halo game to someone who hasn't played the series, it'd be Combat Evolved. If I could recommend a second Halo game to someone who hasn't played the series, it'd be Reach. This is a huge change for me. Last time I played it, I found it contrived and trite. This time, I was blown away.

You could tell Bungie was flexing a little in their last Halo game. The cinematography is genuinely impressive. How many times have you been able to say that about a game? The camera is thoughtfully placed in every cutscene. The game is nearly as atmospheric as a BioShock or Dead Space. The story is moving. Halo games tend to be a bit goofy, but you really feel the cost of war in this one. Tonally, it's early Call of Duty or Battlefield. I don't love the way the grit and realism contrast with the rest of the series, but taken as a side story—like a Rogue One—it's one of the best games of the decade. 9.5/10.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do without Hades II to fill my days. I believe there are some new Vampire Survivors achievements. I also repurchased the Batman Arkham games on super sale, so an Arkham City playthrough might be up next.
