J. O'Barr's 'The Crow' by Trick 'r Treat Studios

It's wanting in the articulation department, that's for sure. Looks like a Marvel Select figure from 2005.

I'm not going to pick it up, but since it's based on the comic I hope at the very least James got some scratch out of it. I've hung out with him at shows a little here and there and he was, in my experience, a pretty chill dude. Super great artist.

The TOTS folks are good people...but they are hung up on the idea of doing minimal articulation. I wish they would pivot away from that model, but from the conversations I've had with Justin, he is pretty adamant about doing these in the style of 90's Movie Maniacs and Cult Classics.

@JakeEkiss from what I've heard they involved James in the process of creating this figure, so he should have been compensated.

That shot of him holding the gun out even reminds me of the old Movie Maniacs Snake Plissken, it's like the same exact pose.

TOTS has a lot of licenses I like, but nothing they do really fits with anything else I have. I've been meaning to pick up the Goosebumps stuff, because I'm okay with that being a scale that's not really on my shelves and I don't need it to connect with anything but Goosebumps. But I'm hoping they find a 5" license that would justify buying into other film lines that I can't really live without (Dream Warriors would do it. Give me a full set of them and I'm onboard).

I picked up the Texas Chainsaw Massacre dinner set and the set of figures, plus a few of the Terrifier 5" figures. I love them to pieces personally, especially "eye poppin" Art the clown.

These seem to be meant to be throwback figures, and really only going to appeal to fans of the 90's & early 2000's style of action figures IMO. The sculpts are solid and the toys feel great in hand. I cant speak to the larger figures, and I realize those have even less articulation - but aesthetically I think they look great and have been tempted to dive in, but Im trying to stay strong lol. Plus Im already invested into an army of 7" NECA horror figures.

Yeah I recall MM being a lot nicer to look at even if they didn't move for shit
MM was that thing where McF was like 'I'm going to put a few cut joints so they're legally action figures, but this will just be incredible little 7" statues.'

This figure is just more ... "I'm gonna make a good sculpt into a bad action figure."

Then he's failing.

This doesn't evoke '90s Movie Maniacs. It evokes 'mid-'00s NECA that still hasn't figured out modern articulation.'
Agree completely, and I've pretty much told Justin that. I get that he's a sculptor, and doesn't like seeing his stuff cut up with articulation...but it's an ACTION FIGURE! Just make a damned statue if that is what you are wanting to do. He's a good dude, but he's definitely missing the plot with the figures, in my opinion.

Exactly.
No shade on the guy. And if this is what he wants to make, then he should make it. But if he's trying to hit a certain look, he's not doing a good job of that specifically. Like I said - this looks less like an intentional choice (like Movie Maniacs lack of artic) and more like the work of a company that just hasn't figured their shit out yet.

So either make a statue, or make a modern action figure - I agree. That's definitely my advice, not that it matters.

I don't really need a comic version of Crow, but if he had good articualtion I'd have bought him because I have that sickness.

I was so excited to see these (especially comic version) and then got a closer look. Hard pass.

TOTS have great licenses but terrible concept / execution / inderstanding of the toy collector marketplace. Luckily theyre very diversified or they'd end up like Super7.

That said, these licenses are getting cut so thin at this point that we could see a properly made BBTS or Boss Fight Crow in the next few months.
