Something you should always keep in mind: If it weren't for guys like Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, Bill Everett, Carl Burgos, Otto Binder, Al Avison, Syd Shores and a very, very young Stan Lee, there would be no Marvel. Period. Full stop. No Golden Age Marvel means there would be no Silver Age Marvel, no Bronze Age Marvel, no Marvel period. And that would mean no San Diego Comic Con, no Marvel Cinematic Universe, and NO MARVEL LEGENDS. Think about that for a minute.

That's why I find it sad and disappointing that a line that calls itself Marvel Legends has yet to make the first Marvel character to ever appear. That would be Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch.

But I guess I shouldn't be surprised. DC Universe Classics never made a Golden Age Superman, either. Action Comics number one and Marvel Comics number one are the two most important comics ever published. No one can argue that point. Yet here we are.

So this is my annual (semi-annual?) plea to Hasbro thread: Hey, guys. Please don't ignore this chapter of Marvel history. It's too damned important. Both my grandfathers served in World War II. My Father was a little boy during the Golden Age, and my grandmother would buy him comics. He told me about these great characters that helped him get through some very hard and scary times. I was not around for the Golden Age, but I have a very strong affinity for that amazing time in history. I really can't think of this line as "Marvel Legends" unless you give us the characters that started it all.

And this would also include the characters that were created in the Silver and Bronze Ages that were retroactively inserted into the Golden Age: Spitfire, Union Jack (although I'm fine with the one we have), The Crusaders

Other Golden Age heroes besides the Invaders: The Liberty Legion! All of 'em!

The Young Allies (Kid Commandos?) : Bucky, Toro, Human Top, Golden Girl and Subbie!

The villains: Master Man, Teutonic Knight and Warrior Woman are a pipe dream. They ain't gonna happen. Maybe Agent Axis, the original Ringmaster, Isbisa, Baron Blood, U-Man, The Reaper, Blue Bullet, The Golem, Scarlet Scarab, Iron Cross. And for heaven's sake, ARMLESS TIGER MAN!!!!! But hell, we don't even Jim Hammond yet.

So if you want these truly classic characters in action figure form, now is your chance to speak up and let Hasbro know. If you DON'T want them, that's fine too. But let me know why. Too goofy? Too outdated? I would genuinely like to know.

The last thing I want you to remember about the Golden Age characters is they provided kids, young adults and American service members cheap and accessible entertainment. But more importantly, they offered readers hope and inspiration in a very dark time in world history. Hope and inspiration in a time when we needed it the most.

"Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free. Remember, Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."

My ideal shelf of 6" Golden Age action figures .... well, it wouldn't be a shelf. It would be more like a wall. But anyway, this is who I would want ...

The Justice Society of America. All of 'em, including Johnny Thunder and the T-Bolt.

The Invaders. All of 'em, including the ones who were retroactively added in after the Golden Age, like Union Jack and Spitfire.

The Freedom Fighters, the All-Star Squadron, the Liberty Legion, the Blackhawks, the Seven Soldiers of Victory, the Marvel Family, the Guardian and the Newsboy Legion, the All Winners Squad, the Ghost Patrol, the Newsboy Legion, the Crusaders (both the Marvel and DC versions), the Young Allies, the Injustice Gang and the Kid Commandos.

The Shield, the Hangman, Steel Sterling, the Comet and the Black Hood.

The Green Hornet and Kato, Flash Gordon, the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, Tarzan, Doc Savage, the Shadow, Buck Rogers, the Black Bat, the Spider, the Avenger, the Green Lama, Indiana Jones (Hey! We totally got one of those! Thanks, Hasbro!), the Rocketeer (Got one of those too!), Miss Fury, Captain Midnight and Lady Luck.

Sgt Rock and Easy Company. Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos.

Real life historical figures. Franklin Roosevelt (Founder of the Justice Society), Winston Churchill (Founder of the Invaders), Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Bernard Montgomery.

And that's just a partial list. I haven't even started on the villains ...

A wall? I'll need another house ...

It's truly sad neither ToyBiz nor Hasbro ever made a dedicated Jim Hammond figure. Using a Johnny Storm figure as a stand in just doesn't cut it.
I expressed my views to Dwight at SDCC that it was a total missed opportunity during last years Marvel anniversary program to make Jim Hammond at least, Jim and Toro at the most - somehow acknowledge classic Marvel. Dwight agreed they'd both be great characters to make as figures.
Jim Hammond is apparently re-joining the Avengers in the current title, so maybe he's on Hasbro's radar since he is now "current".
At this point true classic and retroactively inserted 1940's characters and Western characters are totally neglected which is really sad.

At the very least I'd be content (content, not happy) with the following 1940's characters as figures:
Jim Hammond
Toro
Cap - updated
Bucky - updated
Namor - a true Namor that looks like the 1940s artwork
Whizzer
Miss America
Blazing Skull
Retroactive:
Spitfire
Baron Blood

After that:
Angel
Aarkus (Vision)
Blonde Phantom
Destroyer
The entire cast of The Twelve

Don't forget those cowboys...from those pre-marvel Timely/Atlas days - Kid Colt, Two Gun Kid, Rawhide Kid... I'd be happy with those three... but heck, go deep gimme Apache Kid, Black Rider, the Outlaw Kid,... We could use some cowboy heroes in the collection

Got to also have The Liberty Legion ( Red Raven, Patriot, Whizzer, Thin Man, Blue Diamond and Miss America ). Whizzer also adds another Avenger. I also don't get their absence. Hasbro could easily have tested the market with an Invaders boxset (Cap, Jim Hammond, Namor, Bucky and Toro ). If it didn't do well, then they'd at least have a rationale. Why not a SDCC boxset ? There you're talking about a built-in audience for these characters.

The only Golden Age characters we’ve gotten do far, is Cap, Red Skull, Namor (modern aesthetic), and a half-hearted attempt at Bucky. I’d welcome redo’s of all those. Definitely need:
The Invaders
The Liberty Legion
Kid Commandos
All-Winners Squad
The Twelve
Battle Axis / Axis agents (as much as possible)

Additionally:
Marvel’s Crusaders. The Terror
Aarkus / Vision. Angel
Sun Girl. Challenger
Silver Scorpion. Fin
Blazing Skull. Isbisa
Black Marvel. Golden Girl (Ross)
Citizen V (Watkins). Flexo
Father Time. Armless Tiger Man
Phantom Bullet. Scarlet Scarab
Asbestos Lady. Thunderer / Black Avenger
Mighty Destroyer. Marvex
Officer Betty Dean. Neptunia
Yellow Claw. Black Knight (Sir Percy)
Dorma. Golem
I really could go on.

Great post SDcomics!

I agree that it's just not right to call a line Marvel Legends without the character that started it all. Make the original Human Torch fan channel and a limited edition if you must. But to leave him out this long is frankly a crime.

I'd be pretty happy with the characters in Beamish's list.
Also really want the western heroes in Panthercult's post. Always loved the Rawhide Kid. But they really need to come with their horse as well.
