General Marvel Legends

Dude, I am holding out as long as possible on the phone thing. My kid might have to hold me up at gunpoint to finally get one as I just don't look forward to those days.

Can confirm this is the right move. My wife gave in at 12 when my son was going into 8th grade. Now he spends hours and hours a week on TikTok... he gets ALL of his news and current events via TikTok posts. Its galling.

It hasn't completely rotted his brain as he's set to graduate high school this year with a 4.8 GPA, but man does his attention span suck.

So they're wanting to move into even faster fashion? Terrible.

Target is one of the only retail spaces left that is already fun to be in. I love browsing the aisles and the clearance sections and seeing what's there. That is not something I ever *want* to do in Walmart. This speaks to how up their own ass corporate executives are to eliminate one of the best things their store has going for it.

I'll second the holding off on getting kids a cell phone. They are not good for social development and become the major time sucker in their lives. We were able to hold off until about 6th grade. Since then, other than school work, all their time is mostly spent on the phones. :(

My local Target is going through a redesign, I wonder if this is part of it. I hope it doesn't become one of those "we don't have traditional aisles, we want you to forage and discover things" I've seen at another Target. I friggin' hate that. Aisle 7C was my happy place.

Regarding Target's toy aisle - does the current set-up make sense to anyone? They are mixing and matching licenses all over the aisle! That makes no sense to my brain.

It makes sense to me only in this respect: they've totally checked out and don't really give a shit about brand synergy or consumer experience within this particular segment.

I suspect that is it - I think they want to have the store look full with less in stock and look more sophisticated with smaller displays and not just aisles and rows.

Parents have said this about teenagers forever I think.

I think there's a pretty interesting question here of what a 50% downsized Target toy section looks like, because that's going to be a good indication of what they're moving now. Like, how weighted towards kids' offerings will it be, will the NECA and other collectors' products section stay intact in any way, to what extent are they still going to stock seasonal toys, will they still chase after the intergenerational board game audience? About the only guess I'm confident in is that trading cards and trading card games will be totally fine.

Lots of Lego based on what I saw in a redesigned one. Think of displays that were more like the endcaps highlighting a toyline that they do now and rotate through during the year. I didn't explore it in depth to see what was "missing" but it felt that way.

I wonder if the WalMart Hasbro ML+ display is a hint as well - maybe something like Legends doesn't have a permanent display space but a few times a year gets an end-cap/display pallet push with a larger assortment of figures.

Interesting. That sort of aligns with their page about the redesign, where they mention toys under the "Fun101" thing alongside sports merch, pop culture, and trading cards (See? WWIII could hit and we'll still be selling trading cards just fine). That placement also seems to indicate toys with a broad age appeal across kids and adults, which Lego obviously fits into. Maybe they'll have a section of the store that's just tacitly saying, "Go wait here for the duration of the trip, husbands and boyfriends. Not children. They can stay in the car."

And in general it seems like it aligns with the overall plan here, which is "less stuff but nicer displays, rotated as often as we can legally whip our employees to do it, in order to give a sense of curation." Which essentially sounds like the Instagram or Tiktok influencing+shopping experience. I guess if you can't be an Endless Choices store but you also can't be a high-end boutique, you can vaguely look like a boutique and mess with people's object permanence until they fill their cart.

Actually, the social media curation shopping thing matches the product segments they're focusing on here: wellness, beauty, women's clothing, home goods, price-gouged food, and baby stuff (presumably only available in beige).

On the first day of 8th grade, my son's teacher had a "get to know each other" Bingo game. My kid had an absolute line at his desk for kids trying to check off "does not have a cellphone."

As a strategy, instead of having a random few pegs of Marvel stuff all the time and customers not knowing what is going to be available at any trip, start promoting "it's Marvel month again" and having a large display 2 or 3 waves and exclusives and box sets would be an interesting way to do it. More of an event. Then next month its DC, then Star Wars, then Jurassic, etc.
