Melendez, while one of the least notable, in many ways least impressive of all the original 13 Joes, left a strange mark on the Lewis agents sent to disband the unit and close down the Pit. He packed up his locker peacefully, looked one of the agents in the eye, and said: "Puedes romper nuestros corazones, pero no nos romperás, amigo." The agent assumed it was a threat, but one of his colleagues told him to let it go. Surveillance followed the subject back to his hometown of New York City, but a few days after arrival, Melendez disappeared. A warrant has been issued quietly for his arrest but at the moment he is considered a low risk target.

"There's this old joke we have about Zap, that he's a square, he's just boring and nice, y'know? But he's got the smile of an honest man. Zap has nothing to hide, never has, never will. He just is what he is, a good heart who wants to help people. And Lewis took that away from him. Hawk would have understood if Zap just went home - he'd put in his time, more than most of us, he deserved retirement. But he's not done yet. And I'll tell you, him joining up with Hawk is the best thing that could've happened to us. The man knows how to crack a tank like an egg. He's a combat engineer - there's institutional memory in his head nobody else has. He took one look at where Lewis was taking the country and said no way, not on my watch. I'm glad he's got my back, and I'll always be honored to watch his."

Check out his V2 file card. it's got "he's kind of like the best of us" vibes. I think it's why I just love the O13 - they were just dudes doing the right thing while dealing with the PTSD of a war America should've never been in in the first place. There's some really low-key pathos there.
 
And that's when Hama/GI Joe was at its best. I know he did some of the post-Marvel stuff, and maybe he wasn't as interested in telling the kind of stories he'd done for Marvel, but that stuff really was incredible.

From his V2 file card - I try to lean in on themes in the text as much as I can with these guys. "Zap is a square, in the best, old-fashioned sense of the word. He can look you straight in the eye and not flinch, because he's got nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to hide. Does this make him a better soldier? Not TECHNICALLY, but it certainly makes him a person you'd want to soldier with."

I try too. Usually anyone who's origins I change has a reason too. For example Doc is from the same place in Kenya as Doctor M'Benga from Star Trek. Outback is Australian (Because he always was to me as a kid) as is Recondo, because he was in Action Force. A few of the guys get their action Force origins just to vary it up a little.
