Subject was part of an advanced program using DNA samples from the Hydro-Vipers in test subjects not originally exposed to the supernatural energies which mutated the original crew of Eels. Mindbender, with the assistance of Rottclaw, was convinced the experiment would result in superior amphibious soldiers without the negative effects and disfigurement witnessed in the Hydro-Vipers. Mindbender was half-right - the initial test subject did not experience some of the less... visually unappealing aspects of the Hydro-Vipers, though her skin tone shifted to an unearthly blue. The downside to the test is that the subject was now fully aquatic and no longer able to remain on the surface for more than a few moments at a time. She was declared legally dead and payments were made to her family for her "service" to the military while she remained under guard for further study. A recent incident involving a crew of former GI Joe operatives resulted in her... liberation from our labs. Test Subject Mara is currently at large. Ideally, she will be recaptured for further study, but if necessary, termination is acceptable to prevent the public from learning about our experiments.
"I'll never see her again, I think. We got her out of there, out of that cage, that fishbowl Lewis kept her in. I felt stupid asking the boys to help me get her out of there, but for a bunch of lunkheads, the Joes are a crew of romantics at heart. I have a thing for mermaids, I guess, and Mara must have a thing for morons, because I think she cares about me, too. I couldn't leave her locked up there forever like some lab sea monkey. So we shot our way in and blew our way out and set that mermaid free. You know she only joined Cobra to get out of poverty, right? I mean, I joined the Navy for the same reason. I guess a lot of us sign up to kill people for money so we don't starve in the street. I wish we lived in a better world. I wish I was a diver instead of a sailor so I could dive below those waves and see her again. But the best stories are tragic, and the strongest hearts are broken, and I guess that's the destiny the sea is willing to give me."
