G.I. Joe Classified Series

I don’t think I had ever experienced so much attention in the toy isles than those Cobra Island days.
It was an interesting time for sure. Ultimately I was able to get all of the CI figures I wanted, the only one I passed on was that Roadblock with the weird painted- on shirt, but I went out of my way...WAY out of my way.... for more than a couple of them. I was even able to help out my brother in law who does not live in a Target hot spot like I do.

Still, I'm convinced that at least 50% off the people looking for CI weren't Joe fans but just collectors who heard that CI was the latest hot thing. I saw a lot of people trying to unload their Classifieds and CI stuff in bulk when the hype died down.

I don't think you're wrong. The number of people selling Baroness for $250 on eBay screamed scalpers. Guessing even a lot of people who DID want the figures were buying extras to unload online.

When 10 minutes of shopping can net you $200 gains for no work other than selling on ebay, of course scalpers and employees will get in on it. We can't even be mad at them, the real sin was Hasbro releasing fan-favorite army builders at a store exclusive. Classified wanted to drum up interest in the line and went too far. Tiger Force was a great fit, it sucks they haven't made more. It's not like other Target exclusive toy lines don't go on clearance (WWE Legends Elites and MOTU exclusives are on clearance every toy cycle). Guess they wanted to make space for skibidi mr beast's toilet or whatever they think kids want nowadays (I'm pretty sure they just want squishmallows and tablets).

Labubu is so baffling. I've bought some Pop Mart blind box items from Aliexpress a few years ago. A lot of sellers open them and you can just buy the ones you want. I saw the mech Labubu a few years back and pondered ordering one. None of them really stood out to me and I passed. These things were available. There was no craze. Then a celebrity or two are seen with them, and suddenly all these sheep are scrambling to get them. One of my friends has fallen into the craze. I confronted him about it. Told him he only wanted them because other people want them (he's had a history of falling for trends, yet somehow pretending he's not part of the crowd). No, he says he likes them. He's gone to stores at opening. And sits on his computer trying to snag drops. C'mon. It's just sad people are only interested in something because a celebrity has the same thing.

Yeah - I mean, as the father of two children (and by extension exposed to birthdays and other forms of gift-giving for other peoples' children), I can confirm that very little of the things you can find in a Walmart/Target toy aisle are things any kid actually wants to own or will ever touch again once they have it.

I'm glad I raised my kids better than that. Both my kids think Mr. Beast is a fucking scum-pile.

I barely know who Mr. Beast is, because I avoid all “influencers” like the plague they are, but what I have been forced to learn definitely disgusts me.

Sigh.

I have seven nieces and nephews and no kids of my own, but I'm the uncle who writes superhero books so I am leaning in SO MUCH on being the cool uncle who buys them Star Wars, Marvel, DC, etc. stuff any time they show even a tiny interest in it. The oldest asked if we could watch Jaws and Gremlins this weekend and I looked at my sister like PLEASE CAN I SCARE HIM WITH THESE MOVIES

(She's got four; doesn't surprise me that they're watching influencers on Youtube, she can barely keep up with any current trend.)

GI Joe is a tough one cos there's less of an onramp for kids their ages, but I'd have no problem spending money on their first Snake Eyes figure if it caught their eye.

My brother's eldest is getting older, but he still PLAYS, like we see him telling stories with action figures. I tell my brother all the time "that kid wants action figures and you're on the fence, you let me know and I'll send you one." Of course same brother whom I just gifted his first Black Series figure last month and you'd think I gave him a pot of gold. He needs a Snake Eyes too, he just doesn't know it yet. The collector in me appreciates that Classifieds seem to retain resale value; but I'd love to dumb luck into a fire sale of some duplicates I already have so I could get my brother a couple of classics. His favorite growing up was Quick Draw, so if Classified releases him, I'll be buying two.

Totally different note, but something I thought of while messing around with the new Retro Viper; is anyone else actually kind of pissed off by Hasbro reissuing/repainting that Cobra Trooper over and over instead of giving us a more classic-looking Cobra Trooper? When I picture a Cobra Trooper in my head - it's that mix of vintage toy and cartoon that was very well-realized by the original Cobra Trooper they released in the 25A line. We have all the parts necessary. Why does Hasbro SO badly want me to buy Cobra Troopers with like.. motorcross boots and gauntlets and shit?

I want the G.I. Joe Greenshirt.. but blue. That's what I want.

Y'know... how much of the Greenshirt buck is repurposeable as a Blueshirt? I'm not annoyed by the lack of troopers yet because, totally on me, the only Joes figure I OVERbought was the basic trooper, I went a little crazy with those and I'm on trooper punishment duty right now. But old school classic Cobra troopers would be rad.

Hasbro does like to busy-up those 1982-1983 looks, and the Trooper got very busy indeed.
I can absolutely assure you with full confidence that a pinless, more directly faithful-to-ARAH/Sunbow Cobra blueshirt will happen. The Rattler HasLab even comes with what will surely be the headsculpt (with the gunner).

They just wanted me to army-build Cobra Island AND Infantry AND Retro first, just like they got me with the various Vipers and BATs before the Retros.

Yeah I decided I'm fully committed to the dark blue troopers, officers, and Vipers. Ah well.

Joes, I won army build as I want only specialists. I would really like Lift Ticket and a lady pilot that I can get without spending $55 on eBay. Truth be told, I would like two lady pilots heh.
