G.I. Joe Classified Series: The Chatty Pointless Thread & Performance Art

Is the Joe line the only Hasbro line that hasn't done a "In case you missed it" rework of figures? Marvel, Star Wars, and Transformers has.
Debatable that the Retro line is mostly exactly that. Some one-offs like Cover Girl and Snake Eyes, lots of barely-repaints like Rock n Roll, Stalker, Lady Jaye, Destro etc.

I don't think that really counts. If you specifically missed modern tattoo Rock N Roll, then a fully classic ARAH repaint doesn't really do you any good at all. Definitely not the same as 'you missed Megatron, so here's Megatron again in different packaging.' Or Star Wars with 'we just put this figure back into cases 'cause it seemed like a good idea - we didn't even number it differently, it's exactly the same.'

Makes me wonder if the Joe line, while obviously very successful, doesn't view any specific versions of specific characters as 'must have' enough to warrant re-issuing them. Like there isn't a certainty that it's worth the MOQ.

As for taking up spots - I think that's become a bit of an outmoded thought process given that these companies can clearly just release as many things as they fuckin' feel like, basically whenever they feel like, until we all go broke. I wouldn't think of it like repaints 'took' a spot so much as they 'created a new spot.'

I may have talked myself into getting the Drift Viper. Of course I'd have him be a unique individual specialist guy, but was thinking I might just remove the night vision visor, which was something I was considering doing if I were to get a second Night Viper. This is even better since he's a different color altogether. Going helmetless is another possibility, and now just gotta come up with a cool codename. Swiping one from a later-years Joe wouldn't be the worst thing to me, but I'd like to come up with something that hasn't been used before...

Hrm, maybe nevermind. The Night Viper I was giving the name Blackout, since I find the actual Blackout design pretty uninteresting, and naming this guy Whiteout just makes way too much sense. And maybe he's a little racist, so what?

Hey guys, Akat likes the dudes wearing sci-fi armour. Just in case anyone was keeping score on 'most obvious things I've heard today.'

I also have nostalgia for this dude. One of the last ones I picked up before... Maturing into Spawn, I guess.

Also always loved the 1990 colorway for the Viper, which I called Copperheads.

That Viper had wacky colors, but I liked it, too. Nostalgic for me as well.

You're right. I think I was still stuck on thinking about the early ones like Lady Jaye and Destro that were 95% identical. But sometimes that 5% can be a big deal, and it's certainly not 0% which is what they were looking for.

They really should do some rereleases. Retro Snake Eyes, any Destro, HA Roadblock all seem like figures that could use a rerelease. Or a new Destro or retro Roadblock could work. I suppose that's why they don't do rereleases, they usually work up to a Retro. But now that the line has some age, it would be nice to see certain updated sculpts and rereleases. Oh, kind of like they redid Major Bludd. That was a nice update (although I still prefer the CI version!)

Arctic Drift aka Arctic Night Trooper looks great! Kind of like MCU Ghost.

I absolutely love that Viper.
I don’t know I could have it “replace” the standard Viper and therefore it’s weird to call them [non-hyphenated] Vipers, but hot damn it would make a fantastic Classified figure. Maybe Viper : Special Forces? I know, I know, that’s what the hyphenate-Vipers are for. Meh, maybe it doesn’t need to make sense, just give me the nuViper.

I'm positive a lot of the lack of re-issues is mostly due to a case where the ones they WOULD re-issue are popular enough characters that they'd just rather sell you a different one. And they definitely seem to be aware that there's wisdom, for them, in selling the 'Classified-up, modernized' version of a character before the Classic one that most people actually want.

You'll buy that sleeveless, all white, modernized Storm Shadow because it's all there is. And then you'll buy it again when it's a proper ARAH/Cartoon look, that you actually wanted originally and, had you owned it first, would have stopped you from buying the modern-style one.

I’m mildly surprised they didn’t do the “t-shirt sleeves” original toy version before the iconic-media retro.
