Four Horsemen Studios Mythic Legions

I hadn't even really looked close at Valgard and Scaphoid last night. Just noticed the knight helmet for Valgard being exclusive. Now realized he also comes with full legs and can make a human sized gold knight. This makes his convention exclusive parts even more frustrating. What the hell.

Yeah, I'm good on Scaphoid but would definitely have ordered one or two Valgards if the extra parts weren't exclusive. As it is I'm probably passing on both of these.

Can’t say enough how much I hate the con exclusive pieces.

I might pick up Scaphoid if I can find the con version for a good price, but otherwise these “Legacy of Mythoss” figures have been a huge bust to me so far.

Otho needs that Soft Goods update to look all fancy with Giddeon and Attila (although if you ask me, his new head isn’t as good, and I’ll probably be putting his original head on the new body) but I never considered Urzokk, Valgard, or especially Scaphoid major enough players they needed upgrades.

Scaphoid is especially a downgrade, I don’t know, the original with the evil armor pieces is just a toxic green skelly screaming into the void, it’s a THING not a person, a thing you wouldn’t want to run into traveling through the forest let alone on a battle field… but giving him the boots and gloves and soft goods and the runes carved into his skull and the potions and spell effects… a skelly mage is stupid, it’s a hat on a hat, I hate it

Like if you don’t have them, cool, but for $55 I’m not seeing a lot about them to make them worth replacing my older figures.

Agreed. Very frustrating that the golden knight army builder is exclusive to a convention. Really undermines the concept of army builders.

I think this is it. I'm really happy I nabbed Otho cos I never had him, but I'm the dumbass who bought Urthokk two weeks before they announced the update and if I had to decide which of the two two keep, there's a dirty sullen moodiness to the older version I like more thran the new one. There are certainly a few never-hads I'll spend 55 bucks on, but I'm perfectly happy with my older Scaphoid.

I opened Otho today.

*sigh*

This is my seventh 4H figure. I have the Graveyard four-pack, Samir Scrollwarder, Arrizak, and now Otho. I don't know what to make of this line.

I think the skeletons are the best of the bunch. I hate the two wizards. Otho, by default, is somewhere in between.

For the longest time, I avoided 4H figures. I'm an articulation junkie who would never willingly buy figures with single-jointed elbows and knees. Well, until he wanted a D&D display, anyway. While the elbows sometimes leave me frustrated, I like how 4H figures pose. They have a certain sturdiness. Otho blends the good and the bad. He poses easily and looks great doing it. The fiddly bits, though... the fiddly bits drive me nuts.

I removed the straps around Otho's chest minutes after I unboxed him, even though I thought they looked cool. I couldn't get them to stop riding up around his neck. Shortly after, the soft goods top twisted itself around his lower torso. My attempts to straighten it only left the belt askew. In trying to fix the belt, the plastic armor piece in front of his skirt popped off. It was a comedy of errors. I'm an unreasonably calm person, but tedious shit going awry makes me lose my temper like nothing else. I had the same experience with the wizards. The soft goods and little accoutrements add so much personality to the line, but it isn't worth the headache. I can't have any fun posing the figure if I have to worry about little accessories popping off at every turn. At this point, I think my ideal Mythic Legions figure is a plain armory knight.

I never see anyone else complaining about this. Are you guys gaslighting me?

Not deliberately gaslighting, but I get it. Like, Samir is one of my favorite figures. He's just THAT WIZARD I want on my shelf. But he is a tremendous pain in the ass. All his fiddly little bits are so effing cool and he drives me goddamned nuts every time his belt comes unhooked or his little potion rack falls off. But I love the little gleam in his eyes with the gloss they added to it, and the nut-brown hand sticking out of his shoddy robes that is casting a spell. If another line did what they did... I'd say I have no brand loyalty to 4H but they just happen to be making the most easily attainable versions of what I'm looking for. (Other fantasy lines just aren't putting out the right character selection to make me happy long term.)

I mean sometimes they really do get it right. Krotos is a perfect action figure. Thistlethorne is adorable. The armory knights, when they are not borked, are REALLY good. But I'd say half the armory knights I have are too loose in all the joints (compared to most of the line being too tight). But like, it's rare that I pick up one of the figures and I don't find it evocative and inspirational for story.

Mythic Legions feels like the old Targaryen joke from Game of Thrones - every time 4H release a figure the gods flip a coin. Or really every time 4H SHIPS a figure, cos sometimes the quality between versions of the same figure can waver a ton. Like, the brute figures, the slightly upscaled one? Their orc shaman - one of my favorite figures I own. No joke. Same body, but actually arguably a more beautiful toy with the djinn they released? His arms just fall off. No grip in the joint. Same fuckin body. They keep pulling me back in cos when they get it right I love 'em but I swear it's a 50/50 chance I'm on here raving about how cool something is as I am cursing them out.

Despite myself, I still would really like to have Otho. Luckily, the price to get one of those guys in Canada serves as an effective barrier to giving in.

I've heard a lot of complaints about various wizards' belts struggling to stay closed over their robes, but the only robed figure I own is Red Death and I stripped him down to his skivvies so I haven't experienced those issues myself. Thorasis has a full surcoat, but it hasn't given me any trouble the couple of times I've adjusted his pose. However, Necronominus has a very fiddly kit and it took a lot of work to get it all onto him and adjusted the way I like. I'm sure if I wanted to adjust his pose with any kind of frequency, he'd be a real pain in the ass.

The belt on Samir (which is used on a lot of their skinny figures) has a small, not particularly grippy nub to clip the belt closed, which actually would be okay if it had enough room to deal with the robe moving. The belt pops off frequently if you adjust his robes, just an annoyance. I have thought about gluing the belt closed but I don't want to limit future options.

Honestly, I haven't messed with belts on characters. I just leave characters built the way they come. Maybe swap a head. The new Otho and Urzokk do have a lot of cross-body belts going on though. I can see wanting to remove them as they clutter the neck. Urzokk's neck armor (damn is it soft) struggles to fit properly due to those belts. The softness of the neck armor doesn't help either, as it has no weight or resistance and just moves aside for the belts.

It's not MyL but a Cosmic Legions figure which killed me. The bug guy. Wings fall off. Little arms fall off. It was very much the same experience docsilence had with Samir. I'd get one thing on and another would fall off. I thought I'd really like some bug-guy figures. Bought one blue and two earthtone ones. Only opened one which frustrated the hell out of me. Have to get around to selling the unopened ones. That figure is a mess.

MyL figures can get a bit floppy in the hips. They really do have great range-of-motion in the legs, but the hips can be a problem especially if you've swapped legs on a figure. Waist has always been great (wish more lines had ball waists...looking at you Marvel Legends). Arms have always been a bit stiff, but it's understandable due to shoulder armor. They have at least recently given the elbows better movement. The figures almost always look really good, but there are certainly other lines now which have more functional articulation and are more durable.

I've been on my Samir tirade before. My figure is relatively stripped down because it wasn't worth the frustration. Same with Arrizak.

The belts are too small to wrap around the soft goods pieces. It feels like the figures themselves weren't balanced for the weight of the soft goods, either. From what I know about the Mythic Legions timeline (i.e., CJesim started making soft goods after the bodies were sculpted), that makes sense.

The figures look badass on the shelf. Otho in a basic stance right now? *Chef's kiss*

Some of them are incredibly fun to pose. It's hard for me to square that with the figures that I want to throw across the room. I have Samir standing straight up on my fantasy shelf with his staff in one hand and his book in the other. It must've taken me nearly 10 minutes to get him to do that without him falling over, the book falling out of his hand, or the staff drooping.

I noticed these figures have minimal fiddly bits. :)

Seriously. One of the reasons Krotos works so well is the MECHANICS of the figure are very simple and not fiddly, but real time and care was spent on the sculpt details. The head is amazing, the details on his satchel and staff are lovely. Compare him to some of the wizards you really can see the difference.

The soft goods can be hit or miss, too. Like the heavy cloak they gave Duban is phenomenal, and he's got that newer-ish ranger/rogue body underneath so he's really fun to pose compared to the wizards. Another soft goods piece I love is what was supposed to be the kilt on the half-orc two-pack warrior - I popped it off the figure and used it as a riding cloak and it hangs PERFECTLY on the same figure (swapping out the cat head instead). They definitely overthink themselves sometimes.

The 2.0 bodies (thin wizards, females, and elves) are harder to pose and keep stable. The wizards are extra fiddly.

By far my preference is for 1.0 style figures using the Valiant Knight body. Sir Gideon Heavensbrand is my favorite. If you want a basic knight, get the new Silver Knight, which has two faceplates and some weapons and shield options but no cloth goods. All of the Armory Knights are awesome.

That said, I had none of the issues mentioned with Otho v2, and I head swapped him multiple times and posed him around a lot.

That Valiant Knight body just rocks. I was eh on the earlier knight version, but Gideon, Andrew, Enoch, Elijah, that whole string of knights are all really fun to pose. I only ran into joint issues once the them, a too-tight shoulder/armpit on Andrew that messed up the paint a little bit.
