Four Horsemen Studios Mythic Legions

So I can understand them pulling that head sculpt but I wish they hadn’t pulled the other one. Are we not allowed to have red haired female highland warriors because it gets too close? I wonder if they changed the skirt to be more highlandish or covered her midriff if they could have kept the heads.

I wonder if what forced their hand in removing the heads was the fact that the announcement picture was so close to the IP image that there was no way real way to argue that it was just coincidence. They probably should have just shown the promo pictures with the other head sculpts and just showed the non-face painted red hair one in the picture that shows everything that she came with.

You’re very much permitted to have redheaded warrior women, just like you’re permitted to make and sell toys of red, yellow, blue, green, and black lions.

You’re gonna get bad message though if you promote the lions as combining into a humanoid figure.

4H flew way too close to the sun with their marketing that it caught the intention of people that can tell them no.

We all know the photos and the head option were meant to heavily imply Red Sonja, and I’m a little tired of people saying “nuh uh” because they like the 4H or want the figure

It's funny, the redhead from the head pack from a few years back is a perfectly fine Sonja stand-in, too, I've got her on a generic barbarian body.

(To be fair, if I've learned one thing as an IP owner it's that you actually do have to take action to defend your copyright/trademark - if you're sufficiently negligent it can become harder to protect it in court. It's why you'll see stuff like Homsetuck or Critical Role create fan art policies.)

Why I have been so surprised with hasbro allowing BigBadWorkshop to do some of the product they’ve done

That's it right there. I bet if they'd done normal promotional images and were just like "and there's a red haired version as a bonus" they might not have caught a C&D but the promo photos might've just been called Scarlet Sarah or something. Goobers. They're goobers.

Honestly, the Destro and Hooded CC homages are damned near Icarian in their trek toward the sun. (And I like what BBWS is doing, but it does feel like they're wiggling their fingers in the lion's mouth. Though this might've just sold me on picking up the Enemy figure if he's still in stock so I can have a hooded CC for some photos.)

Yeah it’s like chose to use the redheaded figure in the metal bikini armor posed like red Sonja as your main image. That’s on you. Not even bigbadworkshop is doing that with their red shadows figures

Received my Rising Sons order today. This is probably the first time I feel like I really got my money's worth with 4H. Some of the figures are a bit overwhelming with the amount of stuff they come with. Particularly Skapular. I wanted a figure that seemed pretty close to the "Immortals" similar to what was shown in 300, so this is about as close as one can get aside from the color differences. He comes with plenty of stuff, though I'd have sacrificed some of it for swap out human limbs over the skeletal stuff. Still an impressive figure, though the amount of soft goods makes me feel like I'm dressing a doll somewhat.

Neve is good, a bit thick just in appearance to the human males even. I bought her mostly for the accessories, like the templar helmet in a different color, and the shield that holds stuck arrows. All very good and impressive on the stuff she comes with. Still deciding if I'll keep her, as I didn't realize she's a Viking Elf basically.

The Barbarian / He-Man composite is probably my favorite and the closest I've gotten to getting a tricked out Gladiator character. I really enjoy this one and may but another and see how close to a 4H He-Man I can get, since I like a lot of his accessories.

Broddr is mostly just another I bought for the accessories. He's a quality looking Norseman composite, the buckler looks great, but I mostly just wanted him for the spear and leather-looking pauldrons. He'd make a lot of Viking enthusiasts happy though. The axes in this line are plentiful and detailed standouts.

The accessory packs I mostly just bought for the torch and the gladius' that come extra to be used in making a gladiator figure more "deluxe." Someone will kindly have to explain to me what this hooked medallion thing that comes with a number of the figures is. Looks like a flat gold disk with a Christmas tree ornament hook on the top. Is it some sort of Viking calendar or astrolabe?

Overall very good wave. This will be likely my last major purchase from 4H for a while as the prices now exceed my wants and a lot of the figures don't seem as distinctly in line with representations I want of historical looking characters/figures. Overall very pleased with it, and just to finally have it after 2 long years of waiting. I can't really justify the wait to myself much anymore for most of this stuff though.

I'm unfamiliar with this, regale me.

I assume you mean how my wife designed Minotaur’s helmet and was never credited (if you mean how they’re always stealing art I got examples of THAT too but I’m telling this story first)… well sit back and let me tell you a tale a tale set back in ye olden days of the FanTastic Exclusive Forums!

Here’s the Horsemen’s “official” history of Minotaur the Duck, but here’s the relevant part of the story:

“You can see *some* initial *fan-created concept art*”

Notice the official story diminishes my wife’s work in designing THE FIGURE’S ACTUAL HEAD

“Fan Concept Art” that is the exact head the figure would end up having. The Horsemen’s history somehow has Minotaur’s head just appearing fully formed in the world, no one fan created it, it was “fans”, they were all drawing this Minotaur fella! Even though we only have one image to show for “fans created works”

Mr. Yak used to have a cartoon rubber duck as wearing a straight up “kill the rabbit” style viking helmet to represent the joke version of Minotaur. When the Horsemen started a forum based contest “you guys help us pick one of the birds heads and it’ll be sold exclusively to forum members!” My wife drew this version for him as a gift (they were forum buddies) so he could enter Minotaur.

I actually remember Minotaur as the variant being a fairly unpopular idea, I remember when we had lunch with Banea and Iz at Comic Con (oh yeah, we weren’t just forum randos! I’ll get to that) the two of scoffed at the idea he could win. I kind of think it won because, and I’m sorry everyone who posted one of these… it was the only one that a unique idea. Every other idea was “how about this birb?!”, Minotaur had a hat which at least made him unique and the exclusive wasn’t “Pelican” (a lot of those “how bout this birb?!” ended up being in wave 2, along with an owl wearing a battle helm very similar to one my wife submitted, albeit with the helm being a lot less ornate, but I’m sure it’s just a coincidence *eye roll*, also although not in birbs wave 2 Iz submitted a photoshop of Eric Powell’s the Buzzard’s head on the Bird body, and I think the “zombie” head they’ve been heavily reusing that originated with green glow Haggan sure looks a lot like the Buzzard, so ripping off Darkhorse Comic art is just a thing baked into the 4H’s blood!)

At the time it was kind of assumed “oh well surely they’ll contact us if our variant is picked” but no, the forums crashed, the domains got scalped, everyone assumed that was that… Until they announced the Birds Kickstarter at (a hotel near) Toy Fair a few years later. My wife found out Minotaur was getting made when I sent her a photo from a toy news site covering the event (apparently Mr. Yak found out the same way even though it’s HIS FUCKING CHARACTER!)

It’s not even a case of “well maybe they didn’t know how to contact her is all…” No dude, we were in deep, remember when I said we had lunch with Baena and Iz?! We spent the Comic Con the Seventh Kingdom Cat Warrior Women were released hanging out with Cornboy at their booth. My wife had drawn a poster of Xetheus, Ramathorr, and Akuli and presented one to the Horsemen (and one to Iz) and Cornboy lit up recognizing it as being from the forum. The Horsemen even emailed her about doing a Seventh Kingdom comic with Baena after their first attempt at comic flamed out (unlike every other potential collaborator that works with the Horsemen, my wife if aware how much work art actually takes and declined because it was more than she could take on.)

They knew her, they just for whatever reason decided not to contact her or credit her. Since Mr.Yak was also not contacted I’m going to assume it started as an “opps! Yeah we should have done that huh!” mistake since the Horsemen routinely prove they are bad at this but usually fail upwards, but as Minotaur seems to over shadow even the Raven when it comes to popular variants from the Kickstarter (Dan Larsen and David Silva still use Minotaur in photos from time to time, the variant Father Christmas has a toy duck homaging him) it became a “well we can’t just say we didn’t design the most popular figure in our first Kickstarter” so “fans” as a whole created Minotaur and the Horsemen breathed life into him, no one person truly responsible for this team effort they made possible, them, the Horsemen they did!

Anyway, would have been a big deal for an artist just starting out to be able to claim the Four Horsemen based a sculpt off her art, but that time is long gone, and I guess now she’s in the company of Red Sonya of “people with a paper trail the Horsemen have stolen from”

Are they usually generic with skin tones?

Could the Tuscc Engineer head match?
I'm happy with the color match with the bonus head - their skin tones don't vary much at least on the ladies. I tried the blonde and the readhead on two female barbarian style bucks that had only masked/helmeted heads and I didn't see strong difference in skin color, both combinations worked.

Yeah it’s like chose to use the redheaded figure in the metal bikini armor posed like red Sonja as your main image. That’s on you. Not even bigbadworkshop is doing that with their red shadows figures
I'm legitimately curious if they would have gotten themselves into any trouble if they just did some cool pics with the black and blonde haired versions. (Like how they included He-Man and conan hair on the male barbarian but they really leaned in on the brown hair in the marketing which, yeah, Thundarr, but not REALLY REALLY Thundarr.)

My current setup has two red-headed barbarians and a blonde, so, weirdly, I'm most interested in the dark-haired one. Maybe this means she'll be easier to get? (Who am I kidding, none of their con stuff is easy to get.)

Disney always got hammered in the press for this - "Disney is terrible for suing some poor pre-school to take down the mural on the main exterior wall with their characters", but barely acknowledged that if you know about it and let it go, it can come back to bite you, or that you can't know for sure that someone doesn't think they are involved with the pre-school.

Why I have been so surprised with hasbro allowing BigBadWorkshop to do some of the product they’ve done
I haven't paid close enough attention but their stuff seems different enough to be OK in part because they at least have their own IP they are developing. It may also help that BBTS must be one of Hasbro's top accounts these days - would not surprise me they are a top 10 retailer, maybe top 5, in terms of orders (once you get past Walmart, Target and Amazon, they might be right up there - maybe EE is bigger?), and probably not taking sales away from Hasbro.

EDIT - and for all we know they discussed it with Hasbro and they cleared it, given it was based more on the British Action Force Red Shadows, which I suspect might be a thread Hasbro doesn't want to pull on as that debuted in the British comics with figures made by Palitoy - so who knows who actually owns the IP?

Except Hasbro owns palitoy

I wasn’t trying to say “nuh uh.” I totally get it and understand for the one head especially with the announcement picture (I have also wondered how they get by with a lot of the MUTO homage figures). I just feel like the second painted head could have been allowed if they didn’t “fly too close to the sun” with the announcement picture. I am more casual with my Red Sonja knowledge so I don’t associate the face painted one with her at all. I have no clue if she very even had that look.

Oh I wasn’t referring to you. Just interactions around this in general
