I hate the figures for the Kickstarter
These feel very much like “someone who has never played D&D trying to make what they think a D&D is”
The reason this is going to Kickstarter, because we know they can fund a self published book and a couple new heads just fine on their own, is because they want GAMERS to give them a million+ dollars because they’ve seen it done for other games.
Jermey probably wrote the book for free or as part of regular job duties at no extra cost, the figures are all existing tooling with only new (ish?) heads, you can make d20’s as cheap give away items… they just gotta plop this down in front of gamers and let those suckers eat it up, pure profits baby!
I don’t see what this game offers anyone who isn’t part of the cult already and isn’t going to just stick the book on a shelf unused unless they need to argue about power levels (circle back to this)
It’s a very 70’s idea of what D&D is where you just pick a class and go. It’s like Gauntlet pretending to be a board game!
Want to be a woman?! Your choice is wizard and whatever her upgrade is.
Want to be an elf?! Thief and whatever upgrade is
Need to be a white guy because you can’t fathom being a character that doesn’t look like you (man, your favorite Guardian is probably Starlord, isn’t guy I made up for this example!) you can be a Pladdin or a Cleric!
Want to be a half orc? Suck our dick!
Want to be a tabaxi? Eat our ass!
Want to be female barbarian? Go fuck yourself!
Want to be a dragon born necromancer? Gargle our ballsacks!… unless you’re famous, in which case right this way, Mr. Manganello!
I also don’t think the Horsemen grasp how long term a game needs to be… are they going to release a revised edition when 6e launches? Do they plan to keep these figures in constant rotation so someone coming to the game in 5 years can actually play?
This my all time favorite Reaper mini:
A punk rock elven bard, I saw this mini at a local store over a decade ago, my wife is an amazing painter and she did this up for me to look like one of my OC’s and it was amazing. I lost the original in an apartment fire, but I’ve rebought the mini as a metal and bone in the years since, I could if I wanted get another one today.
They not only need to keep these four characters and all their upgrade sets in constant production, if the monsters manual refers to any existing characters as possible enemies… THOSE NEED TO BE AVAILABLE TOO! You can’t list off the Dark Four or even the trolls and ogres as things you can fight and then say “yeah those were released years ago, good look getting them for a reasonable price!”
The logistics of ‘action figure’ and the logistics of ‘gaming’ are so different I don’t know what the Horsemen think they’re going to do here, if you could do “table top game… but action figures!” WizKids would have cracked it years ago.
