DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

So Peacemaker Season 2 is now a Man of Tomorrow Prequel. Interesting.
See, this is what I don't like about how the DCU is going - I still want a preteen to be able to enjoy comics and comic movies in full, so why even overtly tie Peacemaker into the PG/PG-13 world of Superman.

I feel the same way about putting Deadpool into the main MCU.

I know, I'm old...but to me I have had 40+ years to watch "adult" shows, and only had a small stretch when Batman and Star Wars could truly enthrall me without thinking about it too much as a kid. If The Empire Strikes Back had been rated R with explicit nudity and over the top violence and I couldn't see it at 12, that would have been tragic...

I'm older than you are and I totally agree with ya.

Peacemaker was created in 1966. He's a Silver Age character. I remember reading a couple of issues of his comic when I was around 10 years old.

I love James Gunn and I think he's a great writer and director, but I do agree that today's movie and comics creators sometimes forget these characters were created to entertain children.

I'm cool with them all connecting and all that but yeah, my kids will see Man of Tomorrow but not Peacemaker. I don't know if they'll want to even when they're all older.

Also I may keep out of this thread for a while as I still wanna rewatch season one then season two but won't get to for a couple more weeks.

@AgentHemlock DC Studios should ask you to write a treatment for a Swamp Thing movie. That would be amazing.

Thanks SD, I'd probably be better suited for that than my Dark Knight Returns modern parody 😅 but ultimately it'd be an existential challenge, I'd never be able to out do Alan Moore's run.

Swamp Thing is the coming attraction I'm most excited for, however. Hoping they knock it out of the park.

Back in the late 90's, I remember talking to Grant Morrison about Batman being in the JLA. I was curious as to how Bruce, who was a loner by nature, liked being in the group and how he viewed his teammates. Grant said he looked at them as "Six Robin's".

Bruce is a good man and he does want to do the right thing, but he's also the ultimate control freak.
I always viewed it as almost OCD. Trying to impose order in a world made chaotic with the loss of his parents. That is why the Joker is his arch nemesis. Batman is neurotic and compulsive; but inherently a good person.

I think I’m tired of the “truly good guy goes bad” deconstructions at this point.
Agreed. Alan Moore nailed it in Miracleman. Let's all move on.
Batman is the other shade. A paranoid conspiracy theorist living in the sticks. Bruce lost his fortune to a liberal elite that ripped him off, while his mind was elsewhere being Batman. He's Batman 24/7 now... online.
Sounds like our billionaires. Only, instead of losing their fortune to the liberal elite, they made their fortune on them.

Marc Andreessen, 15 hours into a paranoid bender on X, thinking he's the Dark Knight wailing on the Woke Joker.
I honestly think the Batman from the Timmverse is the all time best version as it combines both in many ways.
I decided I'm going to get into DC Comics. Not, like, super into it, but Real Fan into it.

I want to jump into Justice League and JLU, but I feel like I should start at Batman: TAS. FWIW, I watched BTAS and TNBA as a kid. I haven't seen any of the rest.

And as it happens, it's anniversary time! Batman the Animated Series made it's television debut on September 5th, 1992.

It's really remarkable. 33 years and it still holds up amazingly well. The casting, the art direction and design, the music, the writing .. it was one of the best interpretations of Batman ever done.

Anyone that knows me knows I am not a cartoon guy. And there's a reason for that. Back in the 60's when I was a small child cartoons flat out SUCKED. They were atrocious. There was always a cute little talking dog or cat. I never got the sense that the protagonists were in any kind of real danger. There was usually a lot of standing around and not a lot of movement because TV animation was terrible in those days. Even as a six year old that insulted my intelligence. I much preferred reading my comics to watching Saturday morning cartoons. Yes, in the comics Superboy had a pet dog and Supergirl had a pet cat but at least they didn't talk.

And so, at the 1992 San Diego Comic Con, when it was announced that Batman The Animated Series was making it's world premiere upstairs in room 6, I didn't bother trying to stifle a yawn. I had no interest. I was in the DC booth with a friend who was trying to talk me into going to see it and I said no, sorry. It'll be stupid, I sneered. There'll be a cute talking dog, I jeered. No action, no adventure, no fisticuffs or excitement. Just Batman talking to Alfred in the cave and maybe riding around in the Batmobile with the dog for a bit. It would basically be a half hour commercial for selling toys, I said. Well, Peter David (Yes, THAT Peter David) overheard our conversation and said "Oh, no. You're wrong, sir. I've seen the pilot and it was so good. Better than anything I've seen before. Do yourself a favor and go." Well, you don't get a better recommendation than that. And it turned out, as we all know now, it really was as good as Peter said. When I saw him again later I thanked him.

So happy anniversary, BTAS! Thanks for the adventures and the great memories.

Doing a B:TAS rewatch with my wife right now!! There’s a lot of episodes she hasn’t actually seen, and it’s absolutely joyous to watch her enjoy them. It’s actually this rewatch putting in such strong focus for me how kind and big-hearted Batman is, always trying to help folks like Harley and the Ventriloquist get back on their feet.
And of course, the ultimate “take that!” to accusations of Batman leaning fascist: faced with Lock-Up inviting him to join forces and “restore order”, Batman’s lips curl with rage as he barks “I was BORN to oppose your kind of ORDER!”
Hell yeah, Batman.
