DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

And Miss Eve Teschmacher! A nice nod to the Donner Superman movies!

Pfft. Even the Arrowverse had one of those. But she does get a bump for being part of my approval of Jimmy's upgrade and general plot involvement.

Saw Superman today. I have to say I loved it. Can't wait to see it again and look forward to where the new DCU goes. I was smiling at the end. It truly felt like the DC Comics I read as a kid. I know this may not be popular opinion but for me Nicolas Hoult was Lex Luthor from the comics. Gene Hackman was good but that version was to light/funny to me. Jesse Eisenberg was.....just strange. I feel fully immersed in the DCU already and can't wait to see what comes in the future. Especially this DCU's Batman and Wonder Woman.

I cried four different times. Very important movie to me.

Go see it on the big screen.

9/10 for me.
It’s getting to the point that I cry during the FF trailer. It’s getting embarrassing.

I liked the color palette and the handling of all the other superheroes. The “jump right into the narrative” approach does come with some costs. I thought it gets the tone right for every character even if sometimes it could use some tweaking here and there. (Ie Hawkgirl’s belligerence for example) That was always going to be tough with such a big cast.

One suggestion though. Gunn is a little too addicted to his one superhero/villain vs 176 opponents at once moments. It’s a trope of his that maybe he’s gone to the well to a few too many times.

Clancy Brown is obviously the best Luthor. This one grabs his tone for sure but has a slight note of greater petulance. Due to the actors slightly less physical standing.

Yes, that subversive Truth, Justice and the American Way my Dad warned me about...
Buddy in Newark just told me he took his kids for DQ and witnessed a woman melting down over "that Superman crap" - you know, the tie in Blizzard.

Said she made a scene, urged people to boycott Woke DQ (No Queens?!) and left in a rage.

He said he was genuinely concerned about the box office now that he has seen this in real life.

I came out of my superhero movie hiatus today and saw Superman. I liked it a lot, I'll give it an A-.

Superman and Lois were perfectly cast, IMO, their scenes together were great. The suggestion that maybe Superman is the punk rocker is fascinating and sells the whole movie for me. And we are living in probably the only time in Superman's 90-some year history where you could get away with making that claim.

I'll defend Hoult's Lex. He was definitely comic book evil. It's true his motivations could have been explained better, but it was well acted. I liked his bad guy speech at the end of the movie.

I don't have huge connection to Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, or Element Man but their inclusion and portrayals worked for me. Mr. Terrific was my favorite of the bunch, his fight scene was pretty bad ass and shot in a unique way. I liked his attitude. Seeing the Hall of Justice was fun.

Like everyone else, I liked the Jimmy Olsen take as well. I wonder if he has this effect on Supergirl. In my head canon they're an item. Speaking of:

One of my few nit picks would be Supergirl's inclusion at the end. It gave the vibe of shameless plug that didn't need to be there. And yes, I'm not feeling the "drunk party girl" angle either.

I thought the whole world being sold on the authenticity of the Joe-El recording went over a little too easily. Mr. T says something like, "It's real, all the computer guys said so" didn't hold water for me. I felt like it was absolutely going to end up being a hoax, but I guess it wasn't. OK, so Bradley Cooper not quite as benevolent as Marlon Brando. Oh well, I can live with it. I was happy with the portrayal of Clark's earth parents (oh God, remember Snyder Jonathan Kent? "What should I have done? Let them die?" "Maybe." Cringe!)

Yeah, this is just about the sort of Superman (and comic book movie) I am looking for. It has heart, it has a message, not ashamed to be too "comic-book". I can't wait to see it again.
