Cosmic Legions

So, a couple of years ago I decided to dip my toe into Cosmic Legions. I'm not really into fantasy figures so I never got any Mythic Legions, but I love sci-fi so I decided to give them a shot with Kalian Shunn. I was not disappointed and absolutely love that figure. Fast forward to yesterday when I got my 5th CL figure in the form of Kurnn Ray. Holy Jesus what a toy. It's an absolute masterpiece. It's honestly kind of unbelievable that it only cost 55 bucks when she is on par or beyond with ridiculously priced art toys I see out in the world. She is absolutely an art toy, in fact.

The other CL figures I have are wonderful. But Kurnn Ray is another level. I'm sure it's partially because she is so aesthetically pleasing to my specific tastes, but even past that it's honestly the most gorgeous toy I've ever seen. The paint, the sculpt, the weathering, the detail and the best soft goods I've ever seen. Seriously, her coat is a master class in scale clothing. Tiny stitching, wired belt, working pockets?! And that helmet, good god. Hands down, without a doubt my favorite toy of all time and it's not even close. That seems crazy to me considering I barely collect this line, but she is emphatically the greatest thing in my collection, and the best looking toy I've ever seen.

Them Horsemen Boys have a fan for life in me, now, and I'm actually considering getting into Mythic Legions just based on the strength of the Cosmic Legions I've acquired thus far. In fact, I've already pre-ordered the Snake Goddess and Fish Lady.

I ended up getting a combination of Sentry bodies, the human-faced Experiment body, and Zeerian for the human female face, plus the soldiers headpack and the Man-E-Faces headpack to put on existing bodies. I ay regret not getting the snake but the annoyance but the whole tail situation didn't do it for me. Now to see if I have a body to put one of those chainmail coif hads onto with the spare face.

Not to pick on ML, but just to make conversation - I was very excited for this line, but in the end it disappointed me. I was hoping/expecting something that evoked more of a Starfield/Alien-ish "NASApunk" and/or 1950s retro-Flash Gordon-type aesthetic. Instead, the Horsemen went with a pretty generic modern sci-fi shooter look that's virtually indistinguishable from video games like Destiny.

The Horsemen's pattern is often to work their way around to a look more like what people want - we eventually got fur boots and more realistic looks in Mythic Legions instead of giant pointy scale mail, so hopefully the Horsemen will come around to some other styles with Cosmic.

That said, I'd also love to see them try something like "Super Legions" - a superhero-themed line.

I've also been a little disappointed by the number of generic sci-fi soldiers they've been pumping out. I really like their unique alien designs, but early on I decided to limit my collection of this line to recognizably female figures, which could be argued is just the other side of the coin from generic soldier dudes, so I'm not complaining too hard because I suppose I'm part of the problem. It does seem like this line has struggled to establish itself the same way Mythic did so I'm not totally surprised by the repaints and head packs to try and recoup costs.

Maybe once I move into a bigger house this spring, I'll get a new cabinet and pick up all the fun alien designs that are still hanging around BBTS.

I desperately want a modular 1/12 scale generic superhero line - I've got a superhero series and I would absolutely spend too much money on a line where I could pop parts together to make my own characters. That being said, with Legions' ROM and such, they're definitely not the company I'd want to see do a line like that though.

You'd have to go pages back, but I'll just tell you here.

One of the designers was at the fall Toronto Fan Expo at the ecollectibles booth. I asked them specifically about these aesthetics, and while that guy agreed, he said that whoever the brainchild was for this line (I don't know the company on a first name basis) has a very different vision and actually didn't want humans at all. Which would mean no Pulp/NASAPunk was in the cards.

I can see the heavy Mass Effect and Destiny influence, and even now you see them fitting humans in with the head reuse and plates, but after that conversation I could really see the afterthought in it.

This was back in August. I had also asked about the future of the line because it seemed pretty slow compared with Mythic and he could only agree but say it's not dead. It's a passion project they can keep toying with, but it's not a priority. And I think because it's a passion project, we're still going to see their tastes instead of what we want.

Trouble is, it's not close enough to Mass Effect for me to make some low-effort customs.
