Comic Book Talk

That Russell Dauterman Avengers 800 cover is amazing.
I bought the kickstarter that had all his artwork in it because I love his artwork. It's so clean, and so recognizeable and his interior work is as good as his covers. My one critique I had for him was the Hellfire Gala outfits. I know he's gay, and I have zero problem with that, but he put straight men in clothing 99% just wouldn't wear.

Yeah, you can remove "perhaps". That man was an absolute legend with his work. I was so sad both that he passed and that he didn't get to finish Frankenstein Alive, Alive!

I got to meet Bernie a couple of times. He and Len Wein signed my Swamp Thing trade paperback. Bernie seemed to be shy and didn't say very much but it didn't matter because I was in absolute awe.

True story: At one point in the early 70's, while he was in New York looking for work, Bernie lived in the same Queens apartment building as Allen Milgrom, Howard Chaykin and Walter Simonson. True story. I heard the late night poker games were epic.

I love, love, love that picture. It's my desktop now. That said, I have some nits to pick.

Odd omissions. Kaluu was snuck in there from Ewing's Mighty Avengers, but Squirrel Girl and Songbird from his New Avengers didn't make the cut. Similarly Red Hulk Maverick, but no Toni Ho Iron Patriot or Pod/Enigma from later New/U.S. Avengers. Avengers AI has deep cut Alexis, but unless the person in the SHIELD uniform to the right is not Quake, no Monica Chang. Starbrand(s), but no Nightmask. And while everyone that wore the Ronin costume is featured, I would have thought they'd throw him in.

Not necessarily surprising omissions, but Sharon Carter, Maria Hill, and Victoria Hand all took on the Jarvis' role at one point.

Costume choices are interesting as well. In many cases it's the most recent uniform people wore as Avengers, but Amadeus Cho is there as Brawn - he hadn't been an Avenger since hulking out. I'm assuming that's Voyager between Silverclaw and Maverick Red Hulk, but don't recall her ever wearing black. Mantis didn't look like that as an Avenger I don't believe. Night Thrasher and Elektra joined the AvengERS just recently, but not in those outfits. I don't think Starfox was ever an Avenger in his current look.

And unless I'm missing something Cloak and Dagger have never been a card-carrying Avengers? They were part of Cap's resistance in Civil War I guess, but so were lots of people including the Punisher for 30 seconds. Not sure if Savage Avengers count. That would explain Black Knight's outfit, but no Punisher, Venom, Deathlok, or Weapon H.

Anyone else notice anything?

At first I thought Wasp was in there three times, but then I remembered Hope and Cassie. D'oh!

You got a good eye, @Chooch555.

I don't want to denigrate Russell Dauterman at all. He's a fine artist and he must have worked hard on this, but let's be honest. George Perez would have nailed it. Without question. He would have included everyone who was ever an Avenger, the hangers on, the support staff, even Rick Jones. All in the looks they had when they were with the team. And the most iconic looks for Cap, Thor and Iron Man.

I miss George. To this day I can't pick up an Avengers or Justice League comic without thinking about him.

George was the G.O.A.T. The man had 2 Avengers runs roughly 2 decades apart! His JLA/Avengers work alone...damn! Hell, the first 3 issues of the Infinity Gauntlet. Just all amazing stuff.

Counter: I'd absolutely dress like this if I looked like Gambit.

I just bought this print from his shop. He carried the original version a few years ago but I didn't find out about it until after he stopped selling it.

Deathcry is pictured. She is an Honorary Avenger.
Honorary Avengers non pictured include: Whizzer, Marrina, Starhawk, Martinex, Charlie-27, Yondu, Guardians version of Vance Astro, Nikki, Aleta, Masque, Swordsman II, Magdalene and Rita DeMara Yellowjacket.
Jarvis is pictured, which is really nice, but no Rick Jones.

I always thought of Rita as official because she was in one of my first comics - Avengers Annual 17. Then I think Avengers 300 had a list of all members up until that point that included her.

I bought a couple sticker packs from Dauterman's kickstarter took, but my notebook is still pretty new, and haven't covered it up yet, like my last one. It will happen, though.

In my opinion Rita and Deathcry should have become "official" Avengers because they are both in several Dead Avengers stories.

I haven't read that era of Avengers since they first came out since I didn't care much for it, but my memory has Deathcry as an actual Avenger from that era.

Shouldn't Polaris also be on this cover? Havok and Rogue are there from that Uncanny erA. I didn't realize so many X-Men had also joined the Avengers.

I thought Jessica Jones was Kate Bishop because of the purple shirt... which Kate is also wearing. Weird color choice for JJ. Also, given Jessica's history, would she *ever* choose to wear purple?

They were kinda forced to, it was at the tail end when the X-Men weren't allowed to be marketable until Marvel got them back. I think around the time the Inhumans were massacring all the mutants with their roaming flatulence cloud.
