Also reviving a thread from the Fwoosh - I backed the last Kickstarter with the horses and I am not thrilled they decided to not use Backerkit but instead build their own platform as that seems to be delaying things and frankly it concerns me that things will get messed up, hoping to see some movement on things soon.

I really want to order some additional figures but am holding off until the horses are more official (in that I can order them with my pledge).

I picked up Sargento Centinela Ruben Vivar and El General Joe Ryan when they went up for pre-order a while back.

I'm good friends with Ruben (Sargento) from waaaaaay back in the customizing days, and the same with Joe (JoeRhyno). Joe died in 2021 from cancer. He was a great guy, and I like to look back at our customizing conversations from time to time.

I was reviewing the "updates" from CFT from the Kickstarter. For 7 months it has been that the "allocation and fulfillment" section is just about ready... kind of frustrated with them.

January 8, 2025 -
This is just a note to LYK that work has begun on the allocation and fulfillment section of the chickenfriedtoys.com site so that you will be able to select rewards, allocate funds, and add on any extra items that you may desire. The plan is still to have things ready around the 15th of this month, if at all possible, but there will be notices sent out through the KS email system to keep you informed.

March 26, 2025 (11 weeks later) -
The website is still not ready, and all bugs worked out, so that we can turn you loose to do your allocation. Downside is the wait, upside is more time to balance your budgets and plan.

April 18, 2025 (4 weeks later) -
Just a quick note that work is all but done on the site for allocation.

June 16, 2025 (8 weeks later) -
I know it's been just a bit longer than monthly for an update, but hold tight. There is a reason, and after this coming weekend, you will know why. It's all good news, so look for something early next with more substance.

July 2, 2025 (2 weeks later) -
<no mention about the website, so someone asked>
"Wasn't the website supposed to have a special login for our pledges so we can confirm our addresses and add more to them? "
Yes, and it's not ready yet. We aren't going to rush things that need attention just to say it's done. This subject was covered in the text above, so you may want to take another look. You have not missed the allocation, so don't worry.

"There is a reason, and after this coming weekend, you will know why"

What was this about?
No idea really - I think that they are going to have one figure produced and shipped early (not a figure I pledged) and trying to get people to order the Ron Rudat figure.

Kinda forgot about this. Thanks for posting all that. Pretty questionable that the situation has gone from having the site ready sometime around Jan. 15 to work is all but done on April 18 to just not mentioning it at all by July and telling folks they're not going to rush things as if it's some kind of unreasonable question to ask and he's being attacked. His act wears real thin, doesn't it?

Thankfully I just grabbed a horse for the sole purpose to get the free Native American figure, who looks great, and have no interest in anything else.

Yeah, I dunno with these guys.

I criticized the way they do things a few times and it caused some grief as, at least on Fwoosh, someone was running back to John to report anything mean I said. But it didn't do any good either, because it kind of seems like the same stuff over and over. CFT definitely presents as if they prioritize their show presence and, by extension, de-prioritizes actually producing the toys for the people that already paid for them.

Even the last KS I seem to recall getting a little irritated that they were making new figures available at toy shows before actually sending toys to KS backers/pre-order holders. That, to me, is bad business. What does it say to your backers that you think it's cool for them to just keep waiting while some random dude can walk into a show and get a factory fresh figure today, that they paid for today. Seems wrong, somehow.

There's literally no reason for fixing the website to take 7 months. None. That's just disrespectful to the backers.

I've complained more than once about the way they handle shipping to Canada (it's literally just 'pay whatever random shipping price our fucked up website conjures up, and then we promise to reimburse you the mistaken amount sometime later after we calculate the real shipping' - fucking absolute goddamn insanity). Have my complaints been met with any kind of response you might expect? I guess that depends on if you expect the answer to be 'if you don't like it, don't buy from us.' Which is, you know, wild. And also the exact advise I have taken.

CFT is just a poorly run company. They make really fun toys. I like what they do. I even like John - though I'm sure it often doesn't seem like it because I'm very okay with criticizing the way he treats his customers. But I don't like the way they actually do business. At all.

Even down to choosing to force KS backers to buy a horse with tack they don't want, and then buy the tack they do want -in addition to- the stuff they don't want instead of the NOT FUCKING INSANE AND IDIOTIC idea of just letting people buy horses without tack and add the tack they want. They were not receptive to that suggestion. In fact, John seemed borderline put off by even suggesting it. Like it was some crazy idea that, you know, hadn't worked really well already for Boss Fight.

Yeah. Just... meh. I would absolutely never suggest something nefarious here. I think it's just kind of apathy and incompetence. The figures will eventually come out and will probably be really great. I'm just kind of done dealing with CFT in general. Possibly the worst toy company I know of in terms of how things are run and how they treat/react to their customers.

I understand to some extent that, as a small company, things can take awhile and resources may be tight, but its the lack of acknowledgement that they are by their own statements 6 months behind schedule that bugs me. They haven't really owned that with a "Sorry, I know we said January...", and seem to get annoyed when someone asks about it. I check every few weeks just in case something has happened and I didn't get an email. It really isn't the delay (I forget when they expected to go into production but they are now estimating April 2026 for delivery) as much as the attitude that seems to seep through like they are doing us a favor by making these things at all.

The irony is it is costing them additional sales - at least for me I planned to get some basic figures to go with the horses I backed, but I was waiting to allocate the funds and then decided what else I needed that was in stock. At this point I may just buy those figures from another source when the time comes.

as much as the attitude that seems to seep through like they are doing us a favor by making these things at all.
That pretty much sums it up. The attitude is and has always been 'you're lucky we're even bothering to make this because we're not making any money doing it so just STFU.' And I mean... fine. I did. I absolutely STFU about it and just stopped even trying to buy their products that they are so clearly not particularly interested in selling me. And it's a damn shame because I fucking -like- their products.

Like.. I legitimately think these are some of the most fun toys I own. They're just silly cowboy guys. They look great. They pose okay. They have cool accessories and dio pieces that come with them. I really like them. But everything about the way the line is handled just makes me fucking miserable and actually trying to talk about that is like slamming your face into a brick wall that's been covered in lemon juice.

I got their Santa vs Krampus set at Joefest, and grabbed a Monty Python style killer bunny while I was at it. They're definitely fun toys, but I don't think I'll get anything else from these guys unless they release something I feel like I really need.

Just bumping this to vent that it has been another two months with no movement on allocating our pledges. No updates on the status for 2 months.

They raised $175K from this Kickstarter, I will certainly not back another from them if they can't be bothered to provide an update. It has been nearly 10 months since the campaign ended.

Yeah. I really don't know what happened with these guys. Seems there's maybe been a few setbacks, and I also get the impression that the line has still failed to take off in the way maybe the CFT team wanted it to. But whatever it is has seemed to just make John even more .. maybe not more cantankerous, but more withdrawn and less interested in engagement.

They're teaming up either Fresh Monkey Fiction to make some of their 1/12 guys in a smaller scale. Maybe they just have too much going on.

Maybe they just have too much going on.

I feel like that's kind of always been the case, and there's multiple angles from which to look at that. They've stated that they have to keep working on things all the time so that there's always product in the pipeline, essentially. Totally valid. But when you're stretched that thin, I can't imagine each component of the business is getting the attention it needs. I'm not in CFT leadership, so I have no idea personally. But I've got to imagine sometimes things take longer than they need to not because of a factory not getting back to them, but because of the factory waiting to hear back themselves. Possibly.

It's also completely fair to point out that John still seems to prioritize conventions/events, which undoubtedly takes time away from getting product made. I've also seen criticism about them selling things at Cons that the actual pre-order holders/KS backers haven't gotten yet. I didn't dig into how true that is, but it wouldn't surprise me at all and is absolute bullshit if true.

My understanding is that CFT is only John and Paul, and that Paul is mostly only a money guy that wanted to help fund this because he loves cowboy stuff. He's a lawyer, as I recall, so he's not going to be getting dirt under his fingernails, as it were, on CFT's behalf. That leaves the entire operations to John. That's a very tall ask even if you're just managing a small amount of product. But they seem to be managing quite a lot of product.

And yeah.. the end result is that all of that product comes out PAINFULLY slowly and John doesn't devote very much time at all to assuaging customers (again, CUSTOMERS) that their money was well-spent and that they are being treated respectfully.

It's also only fair to point out that CFT is exactly small enough for factories to constantly bump production on their products in favor of larger volume clients. It's also also fairer... fairest... to point out that if that's the case it's still a problem that we don't see regular updates to that effect.

I like CFT. I like the products they make quite a lot. Like.. QUITE a lot. I just don't think it's a particularly well managed company. Whether because they don't give a fuck to even try, or because they're overwhelmed is kind of immaterial.

I feel I am pretty reasonable and forgiving about small companies taking a long time on projects like this, but you must update the backers and, as noted, assure us that things are progressing. I check every month or so mainly to make sure I haven't missed some communication.

To me the decision to not use BackerKit but try to build their own site/page to handle the allocation from pledges is a self-inflicted wound. I get it as they already have a storefront, so could see the desire to handle it themselves, but if you can't get your website ready in 300 days, maybe it is time to pivot and use BackerKit.

Maybe they can work with BBTS like FMF has and that will help.
