Action Force and Valaverse

The first time that character shows up, it very much felt like it was intended to be a gag. It was funny and it's supposed to gross you out a bit, and all the lead characters in the scene are laughing about it and making faces. It was definitely played in about the exact way you would expect for a show about a biker gang oozing machismo. But the way they turned it around over the following seasons? My God.
Goggins didn't tell anyone, either so their reactions were in the moment. Just walked on set in costume. I've seen him talk about it since and how he wouldn't do it now, but at the time what he wanted to do was give the character as much depth and dignity as he could. Honestly, for a show about idiot bikers, it was in that moment ahead of its time.
